The only itching problem we've had with Smokey so far is some dry skin. The vet prescribed a multivite containing fish oil, which I puncture and put on his food as you do. I dont think straight fish oil would hurt.. just get the smallest capsule made and a reliable brand. The vet also told me to limit bathing, which I dont do anyway. He gets one every 8 weeks at the groomers.

My whippet had severe skin problems from time to time and ultimately, the only thing that helped was a course of wickedly expensive CLAVAMOX antibiotics made especially for skin infections and the dreaded cone collar.

The doggie spa I boarded him at used some pump spray stuff called OXYMED Itch Relief, which was also pricey but worked fairly well. I used the OTC hydrocortisone cream, but honestly dont think it did much good. Steroids dont treat the infection, they only suppress the itching. What the vet prescribed was much more effective, a combination steroid and antibiotic cream but again, costly.

I have used benedryl on all my BIG dogs (half the child's dose), but I dont know how much to use on such a tiny guy. Check with your vet or research the web.

In retrospect, my whipped didnt have 'allergies' He had sensitive skin prone to bacterial infections which he exacerbated by licking and the only thing that cured the infections (for a while) was the CLAVAMOX.
