| Suspecting a chicken allergy, advice. Well on top of the whole episode with Harley (he's better now, but had some medical problems with a bacterial infection) I think I may have figured out one of his other problems, and I want your opinions on whether you think my suspicion is accurate. Ok so first, the last few days he's been on rice and chicken, and he's been scratching like mad, and licking a lot at his paws (some website said that was a sign), and has for the past little while (few months) started developing dry skin. He has little scabby dry skins (not bloody or anything) all over his back and around his nose (he's not losing hair or anything), and well for the past few months I fidgeted with his grooming products, to find no solution. My second suspicion is that he got sicker each time I tried to put him back on kibble from the bland diet when he was sick (this happened three times) diahrea being the first "sick" I though originally that it might have been a bad bag of food, but now I'm not so sure. So I decided to switch his food (I wanted to anyway cause he's exercising more). His old food had lots of chicken in it... So tonight I'm going to switch his remaining bland diet to hamburger (I'm out of chicken anyway) and I'm starting him on Fromm Duck and sweet potatoe. What do you all think about this, am I nuts, or does it sound like I'm on the right track.

| NO, we are experiancing the very same symptons. Vet said allergies told me to check the chicken % on his food. since it is holistic. I also give him real chicken with carrots and green beans when I feel like they haven't eaten enough the day before. His vet put him on 1/2 clartin a day. I haven't given it to him till this evening cause he is sneezing alot today. It's very smoky outside due to fires burning and I feel sorry for him and gave him one tonight. I really don't like giving meds if I don't have to and I was trying to back off the chicken. I have a freind who had to take her dog off chicken period. OMG Jack will die without his chicken, LOL |

| Hot Rod is allergic to chicken. He had the same symptoms as you indicated. When he came to us at about 4 mos old, his skin was dry and flaky and his ears were horrible. We were buying beef treats so we thought it was from that and cut out all beef. He was on Royal Canin puppy at the time. It seems that puppy foods are mainly chicken. Somehow or another I ran out of chicken and chicken treats and just gave him other types of treats such as lamb and salmon. Then I got some more chicken, human type and we started noticing him like his paws more and more. I stopped the chicken and it went away. I read all labels and it's amazing how much has chicken or chicken broth or something chicken in it. So be careful with what you give him as it may not only be the meat but broth as well. Good luck, Hot Rod loves chicken too. I do still will, on occasion, give him a very small bite of rotissare chicken when we are having it.

| Harley's symptoms sound like a lot of Jada's too. She can't have chicken either. She was fine with chicken the first year we had her, then she started having episodes of loose stools several times a day, then a severe episode of itching last summer. It took a while to narrow it down to chicken. We switched food several times, first just going grain free which helped some and then after an upset tummy where I was giving chicken and rice, I noticed she started itching really bad again. We changed her to an LID diet of sweet potato and venison from Natural Balance and it has made a world of difference. I accidentally gave her a tiny bit of a treat that contained chicken liver...her itching was so bad I had to take her to the vet for a shot. It takes a few weeks when you change the diet to see if it is going to work for the itching.

| Thanks, I'm slowly working on an elimination diet, which is killing me cause I just got out of the hospital for jaw surgery, and now I'm cooking better food for my dog than I can eat myself... (Carnation breakfasts and ice cream anyone...) I gave him Fromm duck and sweet potato the other day, and it appeared to go well, but then he got diarrhoea... My breeder told me to give him some low fat vanilla yogurt to harden his stool and then he threw up.. it's strange cause the yogurt has worked in the past. Anyway, he's back on rice and hamburger, and at least he isn't itching, so I don't think he has a beef allergy, which I also suspected. I decided I wasn't going to mess around and bought the leanest beef I could find for him. In a day or so I'm going to try the Fromm again, it has "Chicken cartilage" in it, but multiple ppl at the stores have told me that usually that does not affect a dog with a chicken allergy. I also suspect the diarrhoea might be an issue with his water, so I've bought both him and myself some bottled water (usually we drink filtered water, but both of us have had upset tummys since we arrived home from vacation so I figure I'd eliminate that possibility too). I'm going to see if while on bottled water he can stomach the duck and sweet potato. If not then we'll have to try another diet. I'm worried cause my vet really really pushes Royal Canin, and I used to feed that to him as a puppy, and he had a terrible time on it. He ate his poo, had massive eye goop and had to eat WAY too much of it to be full. So I don't know what I'm going to try next if this one doesn't work. :S Also too he's a high energy agility dog, so I need to provide him with the nutrients he needs to be that active (if I can ever get him healthy again).. Sorry just rambling, I can't open my mouth to talk so I'm bound to my computer and blackberry today.. lol

Teddy was having random bouts of diarrhea and vomiting and I always ran to the vet and they kept prescribing him medication for upset stomach. Every food I've given him since he was little contained chicken...and when I gave him boiled chicken when he was younger he vomited and I always thought that it was b/c I overfed him. I switched to LID diet of sweet potato and fish and his stool is great, no vomiting, etc. I'm so happy we finally found a food that works for us...but keep in mind that I had to switch him slowly so he took approximately 3 weeks to improve and now he's doing great

| don't know how you feel about raw, but my 2 have been on Stella and Chewey's freeze dried for some time now. It's a food that they have consistently like. Yay! It's so easy as well, great for traveling. I've been giving them the beef, lamb and surf and turf-beef and salmon.

| My Kinder is allergic to chicken. She threw up and had diarrea. I had her on Fromms Chicken Ala Veg and Fromms Whitefish and Potatoe. My vet kept her a few days and took the chiken away from her and no more problems. She gets the Whitefish and I use the Fromms Salmon one as treats. Also give her Fromms Cranberry Liver treats every so often. Hope this helps. Susan |

| Safe handling for raw is not any different than safe handling for kibble (including kisses).

| How long after removing the chicken would he still be scratching. He's still itching quite a bit, he's still on rice and hamburger, and I just gave him a few little kibbles to start the switch onto the duck... Thoughts?

In July she got very sick and I ended up at the E.R. Vet with her. Of course at the time they told me don't feed her regular diet, feed her a bland diet of chicken and rice. I remember within days I started to notice a difference. All her symptoms stopped as quick as they started.. I remember thinking... how odd. As she recovered, I slowly started to transition her back on her old food. Within days the symptoms all started to come back. That's when the lightbulb came on! I started working with my vet and she has been on Royal Canin Potato and Rabbit for about 2 months. Her eyes look great, her hot spots are gone.. And her tear stains are also a thing of the past.. For us, it was almost instant I noticed a change.. But I am sure every dog is different.

| I'm noticing a few scabs still, from scratching, but not nearly as much, he is still itching his nose on the baby gate. We'll see how it goes over the next few days... maybe he has more than one allergy.
