Hot Rod is allergic to chicken. He had the same symptoms as you indicated. When he came to us at about 4 mos old, his skin was dry and flaky and his ears were horrible. We were buying beef treats so we thought it was from that and cut out all beef. He was on Royal Canin puppy at the time. It seems that puppy foods are mainly chicken.
Somehow or another I ran out of chicken and chicken treats and just gave him other types of treats such as lamb and salmon. Then I got some more chicken, human type and we started noticing him like his paws more and more. I stopped the chicken and it went away.
I read all labels and it's amazing how much has chicken or chicken broth or something chicken in it. So be careful with what you give him as it may not only be the meat but broth as well.
