Yorkie Yakker | 5 Week Old Puppy Being Sent To New Home I hope this is the right place to post this...if not please let me know where I need to go! I have been informed that a puppy I placed a deposit on has to be picked up this week...She is only 5 weeks old. I know that this is too soon and am scared to death! The story goes the breeder has to leave to go out of town for a family emergency and all of the puppies have to be picked up this week. I have NutriCal, BeneBac gel, and a heating pad in preperation for her coming home @ 8 weeks...not 5 weeks. The breeder said that she is no longer nursing and that she is feeding Ceaser canned puppy food. She has been wormed once but will need to be wormed again...I will have to do this but she is giving me the wormer. She also hasn't gotten any shots because the breeders vet says that she is to small. What do I need to do? I am really scared for her right now and just want to make sure I am prepared for any emergency that may arrise. |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Hoo boy....well for starters you could ask for your deposit back. This situation is not of your making... I have gotten a yorkie puppy at 8 weeks...I really would be very hesitate to go any younger than that age. That being said...you will need to insure puppy eats very frequent meals. At this age and her likely weight...one hypoglycemic crash and she could die. I assume the heating pad you've purchased is a whelping pad? Human heating pads are too hot just in case yours is of the human variety. She will be susceptible to everything...so I would avoid lots of people handling her and definitely no visitors of the furry type. Good luck ....

| Yes, I agree, though I would bet you can't get your deposit back! Wonder if your Vet would take the puppy in during the day hours for a few weeks while it grew some? It would cost more and the staff might not be able to take care of it constantly around the clock, but they could check on it. Yes, get an animal heating pad for pups, you don't want to fry it! I once saw pics of someone's female Yorky that had been put on a heating pad and it caused her skin to slough off. She lived through it but the owner learned the hard way! That is why she put the photos of the ordeal on her website! To teach others what to avoid. If you have to absolutely pick up the puppy, do you have a friend or relative who could be responsible enough to take care of the puppy while you are at work? It will have to eat often and stay warm. It will sleep a lot until it gets older! I got my dog at 4 months and she slept a lot at first! Hope you have a carrier too? Puppy will crawl everywhere when it is awake and active. Good luck! |

| Get your deposit back and run, run, run away as fast as you can. Yorkies should stay with their moms until they are 12 weeks old so you are dealing with a backyard breeder for starters. Getting her at eight weeks would have been a bad idea, five weeks should not even be considered. Not only will there be a high risk of losing her to hypoglycemia, the puppy will miss valuable lessons on socialization, bite inhibition and potty training that will affect her adult behavior for the rest of her life. FYI, it is illegal to sell a puppy before seven weeks old in Virginia so this breeder is also breaking the law. RUN!!!!!!!! |

Are you going to be home all the time with the puppy? A good breeder would never let a puppy go that soon, sounds like she just wants her money now and doesn't care about the health of the pup | |

Yorkie Yakker | Well, the one good thing about all of this is that I am a stay at home Mom so I am able to be with her 24/7! I do have a crate for her and it is set up in my bedroom beside my bed. I also have a "puppy pal" for her...it is a small puppy shape toy that you can nook in the microwave that is soothing for a new puppy...I also took the breeder a blanket when I went to see her for the first time that she has kept in the kennel with the puppies so that she will still have their scent when she arrives and hope that would help with the stress. As for the deposit, I already ask for it back and she said no. I feel that at this point if I don't take her then not only am I out my deposit, but I worry what will happen to her! What can I expect from a 5 week old puppy? What is her Mom still doing for her at this point? |

Yorkie Yakker | FYI...She had 3 females and 1 male in her home. The cages were clean enough but the house was a little on the cluttered side...but I have been accused of being Martha Stuart so I try not to judge others on their housekeeping skills. My children were playing outside after I had given her the deposit and as we were leaving, they asked what was in the building...there were more dogs in there! Backyard breeder, I think so! I should have stopped it all then and there, but I didn't...hind sight is 20/20! ...But at this point all I care about is doing the right thing for Ellie! |

| Well, I have never had such a young puppy before but I would be like you and want to make sure she was safe. You have your work cut out for you in the very near future with your new baby. You have found an excellent resource with YT so just hang on for the ride. I think I would get a sling carrier so that you can keep her close and warm. They are great because they keep your hands free and you can keep her close by and also warm.

Yorkie Yakker | Thank you all for all of your advice! I will keep you all posted on her progress but in the meantime, please keep your fingers crossed and hope that everything is going to be ok! Who would I report the breeder to? |

| Who is taking care of the dogs while she is out ? If the mommy dog is feeding the puppies, who is gonna feed the mommy dog ? If she has someone to feed and care for the adult dogs while she is gone, then the puppies should be okay. This makes no sense at all! Call your vet and tell him what is going on and ask for his opinion or assistance. He might be the best one to report on this woman !! You'll probably have to talk to the person who answers the phone first, but hopefully the vet will have time to talk to you at some point. I would do that first thing in the morning! And if you have to pick up the pup, take it to the vet first thing and be prepared to listen to what he has to say. Good luck honey! |
