| Do all yorkies have the potential to grow a full coat? The groomer at Rory's doggie daycare said that not all yorkies are capable of growing a full coat, and it was the first time I'd heard something like that, so I am deferring to the experts... She eats good food, takes vitamins, is bathed weekly and brushed and combed out every night. She is 13 months now, and it doesn't seem like her coat is very long compared to some other pictures I have seen. I don't desire for her to have a coat down to the ground by any means - the daily combing and brushing after daycare is quite a bit at the current length, but I was curious if it could have the potential to be that long? A teapot at 9 pounds and with floppy ears, she clearly will never be a standard yorkie, but we love her just the same. I attached a picture where you can kind of see her current fur length. I had always heard their coats were somewhat like human hair and would continue to grow unless broken off when it touches the ground or cut. Thanks in advance for the help.

| First of all let me say that your baby is absolutely adorable! Referring to your question, from my research I would definitely say that yes, there are variations in coat texture and growth rates. Here is a link to a sticky in the general thread that gives lots of information on the subject. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...rt-thread.html

| Not all of them get super long coats but they should get some length. My Jewels' coat only gets so long then it quits growing

No. they all don't have the potential to grow a long coat. What you say about human hair is partially correct, "somewhat like human hair and would continue to grow unless broken off when it touches the ground or cut." Each human hair is programmed to live so long, and at the end of a certain amount of time it will die and fall out. This varies greatly between individuals, and can be anywhere from 3-7 years, on average. So this means that a person, who has a three-year hair life, would have much more difficulty growing out waist length hair, than someone with a 7-year hair life. On average, hair grows ½ inch a mouth, so that is a potential growth of 6 inches a year. For the person with a 3-year life that is only 18 inches, before the hair falls out, the person with 7-year life would have 43 inches of length before the hair falls out. Then of course some people's hair grows faster than ½ inch a month and some people need to have the ends trimmed more often than others. So you can see there is lots of variation in the human hair length. The same is true for Yorkie hair, and some dog's hair has a longer life, and can achieve more length before it falls out and dies. There are certain things you can do to optimize hair length, a quality food, perhaps supplements, or oil if they are lacking. Making sure you use good shampoo and conditioners, so that hair isn't breaking. Using a good pin brush is probably one of the most important factors in achieving hair length besides heredity, because brushes with ball tips break the hair. However, there is nothing you can do to increase the individual life of the hair, that's genetics. By the way, you dog is a real cutie.

Thanks everyone for your help and compliments! So I suppose for a yorkie that has quick hair growth, at 12 months, it wouldn't be ridiculous to think they would have a coat to the floor...

My boyfriend mentioned the thing about the height (maybe he's sensitive at 6'5"?) - Rory is very tall for a yorkie. I guess all that really matters is she has a healthy coat that she is comfortable with, but it sounds like at 13 months and with her being taller, typically speaking her coat might be right on schedule. I guess most yorkies that are show dogs are older than some others to make sure they have the full coat - this is really what got me thinking about all of this. I believe I saw a dog (not a yorkie) that wasn't even a year old in a dog show once. Thanks again for all the help! Sometimes my mind starts, and it won't quit. It's nice to have a place like this where you can have your questions answered.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Another thing I noticed is that some people let the coat grow in layers, and so the top hair next to the part, isn't reaching the ground, but the hair lower down on the body is reaching the ground, this gives the illusion of all one length if styled properly.

Senior Yorkie Talker | The coat texture really plays a huge part in making the coat grow full length. From the coat breaking pattern article of Carolyn Hensley... Cottony and woolly coats grow fast. Silky grows slower. A wiry coat that has not changed to silky texture is impossible to grow... the coat breaks easily. Proper coat care is secondary as it is more about facilitating the growth of the coat. Proper grooming ensures the coat is free of mats and also protected through oiling, wrapping and/or banding.... Good diet and appropriate supply of nutrients are needed in maintaining coat health from within.

| It could be the coat is breaking if your yorkie is running in the grass and playing outside.... My girl's coat is about an inch off the ground. I do oil her but, she has NEVER stepped in the grass to play. So, my next effort will be to wrap her coat......thinking that maybe the little jumping on the bed, and on my rugs may be breaking her coat a little on the ends. That is my guess about the coat growth. Good luck. |

| This is a very interesting subject......... and don't forget about DIET! I think a good food and excercise also helps.......... (the type of shampoo and conditioner also make a difference of how healthy the hair is)

| There is also those yorkies that have self leveling coats that never reach a certain length. Then there are the red legs.....that never grow coat. As stated above allowing your puppy on the furniture, sleeping with you, on carpets, etc....do contribute to rubbing and breaking a coat. Daily brushing, on a show coat is not recommended......you over work the hair.....You never brush a dry or dirty coat......this also, contributes to breakage. Diet and keeping the coat clean (that means bathing every 4 days) are key to growing a coat.....

| I have the same issue with Preston. He is now 15 months and his hair doesn't seem to grow very well either. He has a thick coat, doesn't mat easily (as a matter of fact I hate to say it, but I only comb him on Sat when I do his bath, and then he only gets mats in the hair in his front arm pits) it just seems to grow really slow. I don't know that he will ever have hair that reaches the floor, he is too much of a scrapper for no rough housing to keep it from breaking. It seems the hair on the top of his head is thinner, not thin, just not as thick as the hair on his body, and really hasn't appeared to grow since we got him. He still has the dark puppy hair on his ends of his body hair since we have never had it trimmed. By the way Preston is a teapot too, weighing in @ 13 lbs the last time he was weighed.

| As far as I know, all Yorkie's hair WILL grow. The length and time depend on the dog. To help it grow faster, you can feed them Omega-3 fish oil vitamins (the ones for dogs of course). Also if you give them an egg yolk once in a while, it will help keep the coat soft and shiny! I would start off giving them an egg yolk once every two weeks, or every month. Then you can maybe give it to them once a week. MAKE SURE NOT TO GIVE THEM TOO MANY!!. A good daily brushing with detangling spray will also help give them a shiny soft coat, and help their coat grow! Your dog is very cute and these tricks should help her coat get longer!
