| Could anyone provide a little help on getting a puppy? Hi, 1st post and tried searching to no avail. I am looking to get a yorkie puppy. However, I can't find anything in my area (new york city) that is reputable. I've talked to 'private' breeders and went to over 5 stores, and all of them seem to be supplied by puppy mills. I've went through many websites to no avail as well. Could anyone recommend a breeder that I can trust? whether having akc papers, good ratings from BBB and customer reviews, etc. I am looking for a male puppy on the bigger size as that will be more in my price range if that matters. And also hoping to have it christmas weekend, and would prefer it to be properly socialized and around 12 weeks when I take it home. My range is about 950 total cost of purchase (after taxes, license, etc.) Thanks+sorry. |

| Have you checked the YTCA? Oh, and I don't mean to be a kill joy, but a lot of the more reputable breeders might not let you take a puppy home on the holidays. Too much going on, too much foot traffic, too many germs... etc. It's best to wait after the holidays when things are calm and you and the pup have a chance to settle in with each other.

Sound advice and perfectly understandable. However, I don't really celebrate christmas, and the reason I am aiming for this time period is that I will be able to use the days off work to help transition a puppy into my home better. Holidays off+vacation days will give me enough time to help a puppy get comfortable. This might be a tangent, but I have some breeders offer pups (usually a the runts of the litter) at a huge discount. One allowed me a pick of the last 2 males of a litter for 500. Too good to be true right? Question, while I know I have legal recourse if something goes wrong after I buy a puppy from a store or someone in my state(NY), how does it work if it's across statelines? I want to know my avenues in case a puppy has health problems, and I wouldn't know what to do if I bought a pup from someone say in PA? | |

| First of all, DO NOT BUY FROM PETSTORES OR ONLINE! It's not so much about the legal matter of if things go bad. In fact, it's about integrity and getting a pup from someone who actually cares enough to want to be a part of that new families life in case they ever need anything. Really, you buy your breeder first then buy the pup second. All puppies are cute, so it's really easy to fall in love with that puppy in the window or that picture over the internet. It's best to put in the time and really research a knowledgeable ethical breeder.

| Ok, so how do I find a reputable breeder? It seems to be subjective. Is it all a (pardon my expression) crap shoot? |

| No, not really. It takes a lot of work on the buyers part (research etc.) to really know what to look for. Besides, a dog is a lifelong commitment, wouldn't you want to start that life long partnership on really good terms?

| I have had many dogs during my life and I have never entered into it without having done my research. It is a whole new world as far as breeders go, I received a recommendation and when I did my research there have been bad reports and horror stories associated with the breeder. I am not in any hurry, when I am ready my puppy will be there, but in doing the work it is very frustrating. |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Have you looked for breeders on the AKC website? I started there, found a local club that the recognize, and went through the club's breeders list. Then I searched each breeder here and read comments. Others were several I would have been comfortable with and I emailed each one telling them what I was looking for and how I was prepared to care for the dog. I was originally looking for a puppy to adopt during the holidays for the same reason as you - time off and quiet household - but I found Tallulah and couldn't wait. Good luck in your search! |

| Thanks for your input, I wish you good luck with your little guy, Kaji. Kudos to you for sticking with the responsibility, too many people quit and fill up the shelters. |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | And BTW, I DO speak English reasonably well. My iPad, however, doesn't but thinks it does, so it likes to change my words. ...they recognize... There were several... This is making me crazy! I hope you will let us know how your search goes. |

| Boopster - I know what you mean with the iPad even cell phones do that. I wish there was a way to turn that feature off. Thank you for your help I have recently looked on YTCA website and printed up the listing. Now, I will start emailing some of the breeders in my area. I will keep you posted. What is the general thought on "shipping"? That scares me. Continental has a "PetSafe" program where they have special shipping crate and they say the pets are in climate controlled areas. Any thoughts. |

| Do not buy online or ship a puppy it is too stressful for a puppy to be shipped. meet your breeder first and the parents of the puppy too. get everything in writing. |

| Thank you for your insight. I also live in New Jersey (south/central jersey), where did you get your baby from? Would you recommend that breeder? |

| Good morning, I was wondering if you considered adoption? I just adopted a female named Ginger from Welcome to Yorkie911 Rescue, Inc. They are a tri-state Yorkie Adoption site that saves the lil furbabies and puts them in proper homes. Definitely check it out, they have dogs coming in constantly and they are all looking for someone to love them! -Justin
