| Help Please--Fleas/Ticks Last night I gave Yoda a bath. As I was drying him, I noticed something around his pee area. It looked like a tick, so I called my hubby in and he said it was a tick. Talk about being scared. After all, this was in a very sensitive spot. Yoda was such a good boy while we got the tick out. He still has a small swollen area where the tick was but it looks better this morning. We live in a very wooded/agricultural area. Fleas/ticks are prevelant here. Yoda is only outside to do his business and for short walks. Our vet said that we could use a flea preventative every two weeks if need be. The one I used two weeks ago was Advanticks as we had tried Frontline and Yoda still had fleas and had already had a small tick. Yesterday was time for his flea/tick prevention. After he was dry, we tried something new. We have now tried two different Advantage preventatives, Frontline and two Walmart brand flea preventatives. I am worried because since I put the one on him last night, he has been rolling around like a mad man and biting and scratching himself. As I was drying and brushing him, I found about five fleas moving on him. I got those off. He doesn't appear to be covered but the tick last night really has me nervous. I am worried that I am not getting the preventative(s) on right. I follow the directions. I seperate the hair and go from the top down to the bottom. For the first day after I can tell in the hair in that area that he has been treated. I know it is supposed to soak into the skin. My husband thinks maybe this preventative is working. I wonder if I should give him a bath and wait two weeks. I can always take him to the vet, try something else and ask them to show me how to put it on to ensure that I am doing it right. This is making me nuts....If Yoda was a human baby, I could call mom. Any thoughts for all of you experienced furbaby mommies? I hate to think he is uncomfortable.

| my experience Mimi had fleas last year . I was looking at Petsmart to see what would be best but somthing kept tugging at me so I left the store without anything. I called the vet and we purchased frontline. Not to long after that we ended up in the ER b/c mimi broke her leg (long story) and there was a man who used over the counter med for fleas for his pug. The dog was so sick he was being "poisioned" by the flea meds. the guy had to take him home and wash him in dawn 4 times in two hours. So becareful with the over the counter stuff. I did call my breeder about the fleas. She said to bath her everyday and take a q-tip swab and put dishwashing liquid on the end and when you see a flea, dab it with the swab. Pull it off and cut it in half with your finger nail. We used a flea comb with this treatment. Good luck, I hope this will help. |

| I use Revolution -- it is for heartworm prevention, kills flees, several varieties of worms, ear mites and I do believe it helps with ticks. Talk to your vet.... I am sure they have some good flea/tick products. For immediate flea removal, you can try Capstar. Here is a link to their homepage: http://www.capstar.novartis.us/ |

| I just looked at a couple of sites, you can get 100 Capstar tablets for dogs and cats up to 25 lbs. for $180 $1.80 per tablet) and a 6 tablet package is 15 (2.50 per tablet). Would anyone be interested in "going in" and buying the 100 tablet bottle and splitting it? |

| I use Frontline Plus and my dogs never have fleas. When I got Ben, I used the Sentinel the vet gave me and did not realize it did not do ticks. He brought in two ticks! So he went on Frontline Plus too -- no more ticks either. One thing about the Plus is that it gets the eggs too.

Vet says there is a new product that he will watch for a few months and if all goes well start recommending. It is a product that does it all! I hope the actual field testing shows it effective.

| My vet doesn't sell Revolution either! I had asked about it after hearing about several people on here using it...she said that it doesn't work on one of the types of ticks we have in our area and something else. So, she said she doesn't recommend it for our area. So....we never looked into it any further. We have never tried anything "over the counter"...like at Wal-Mart on Mojo...I was also told that those drops were not strong enough or they didn't work or something. We used K9 Advantix from our vet for years, it also prevents misquito bites (which reduces the risk of heartworms)....but it just didn't seem to work well w/ ticks....course, we live in the WOODS!...so I know ticks will get on the ticks at some point. We are currently just starting Frontline Plus...and hoping it works...the only drawback to it, it didn't cover the misquito protection...which I am alittle worried about. (but I am anal about that kind of stuff). There is a spray...I think it is called Orvitol? that you can get from your vet or vet supply stores.....When Mojo was covered - I mean his skin was BROWN w/ those little "seed" ticks - last year, she told us to spray some of that on a rag and wipe down his skin....the ticks just fell off DEAD - it works for fleas too....(you can use it around their face too, when using it on a rag). I don't have the bottle handy to read you all the informaion, but it is good to have one hand! I am afraid that the pests will be bad this summer.....I don't think they ever died down this winter! YUCK! That is the one dread about spring and summer! Oh, I think you are suppose to wait a few days after a bath to apply the tick/flea drops....because their skin is dry and the drops need the oil on their skin....something like that....isn't this what is recommended?? I can't remember.....I know the groomer will always ask about the application when making appointments. I think I was told to wait three days after a bath to apply it and three days after applying it to gave a bath. I'm not sure though.

| yes jenn you're right. you should apply the meds a couple days prior to bathing or a couple days after bathing for it to work properly.

| There are so many different natural ways to keep fleas and ticks off besides using harsh chemicles that can cause some serious health problems. You can also use a natural herbal flea powder. |

| I have changed Vets several times because of their methods. 3 used Revolution, 1 did not. The one that didn't got a kick back from what he wanted me to use. He was stupid enough to tell me so. I love Revolution, hadn't had one problem with it. Here are some home made remedies that work quite well with ticks. Rub a small amount of oil on the tick, this tends to suffocate the tick & they will withdrawl almost immediately from your pet. This will stop the tick from injecting it's poisons & make it safely for removing them. Get an old flannel shirt, attach it to a string, pulling it around your yard. Fleas & ticks love flannel & jump on for the ride. If you have alot, you need to treat your yard. Basil, crush up the entire basil plant, & place the basil plant into 2 quarts of water. Let it sit for 2 hours, strain & put into spray bottle. Spray area. I could go on & on. Good luck.
