| Tonsillitis Hey, guys, I haven't been on here for awhile but just wondered if anyone else has a Yorkie who has had tonsillitis. Emmie just turned 4 years this month. She had one bout of tonsillitis about 2 years ago which she seemed to recover from promptly with antibiotics. About 1-1/2 months ago I noticed the glands in her neck were swollen so I took her to the vet. He said her tonsils were swollen and were causing the lymph glands to swell. He gave her antibiotics which she took for a week or so, the glands went down a little, but came right back up. I took her back and the vet said the tonsils were very inflamed (he could see the tips of them, which he said he shouldn't be able to see if they were normal). So, he put her on SulfaTrim which I gave her religiously, and the glands still did not go down. I took her back this past week - he said though the tonsils were still swollen, they were not as inflamed or "angry" red as they had been - he did not want to cause damage to her immune system by giving her more antibiotics, so he made up a vitamin "potion" to give her to help boost her immune system and hopefully get her over this. But, the glands are still swollen. I was just wondering if anyone else had faced this problem, and if so, what treatment it took to get their furbaby over this!!!! I asked him about a tonsillectomy but he said he wanted to wait and see how she does - he thinks it could all be related to allergies. She has seemed to feel just fine through all of this - eats and drinks and plays and poops!!!! I am just worried that if it continues to hang on, she will start wearing down. She is 5.6 pounds. Thanks Barbara

| I am sorry she is not feeling well and tonsils ouch! I don't know anything about tonsillitis with furkids only with my skinkids. But I was going to suggest getting her allergy tested. I am going to get Bailey done next month. It would be less expensive/less invasive then surgery and would be a good place to start, or see if you have a holistic vet in your area and take her in for a consult. (my mom swears by her's) Good Luck!

| I had a little female Schnauzer a long time ago that used to get tonsillitis a lot. They would put her on antibiotics. It's been so long ago that I don't remember much more than that. Have you ask about the possibility of having your baby's tonsil's removed? I wonder if they do that with dogs..... |

| I have never headr of a dog getting tonsilitis. HOwever, I myself Have tonsilitis several times a year. Your vet is right not to give him antibiotics but if the problem does not cease, suggest to switch to a different antibiotic so that she does not get immune to the antibiotic. Sorry that your baby isn't feeling well, whenever my tonsils flare, I am in soooo much pain but dogs have much higher tolerance than humans!!

| Thanks for the posts. No, I did not know about the allergy testing for dogs - I will ask the vet about that when I take her in for her follow-up visit. As far as tonsillectomies in dogs, the vet did not say that they don't do them, and I think years and years ago my mom had a daschund (sp) that had problems with her tonsils and it was suggested she have them removed, but I don't think my mom ever did it!!!! I guess this must be something unusual in a Yorkie??? Barbara

She was just really sick after Thanksgiving. I found out the hard way she is lactose intolerant...yuck...She loves Royal Canin food but unless I give her the supplement lactosebacillus she does not feel good. She like Natural Balance and Canidae but prefers RC. I am going to allergy test her for my peace of mind. A full screen panel is about $150.00 and I spent way more then that when she was sick.

| Trixie my yorkie poo had tonsilitis. She kept getting it and they would put her on medicine and then switch the medicine. After she got it about 4 times in a row, the vet suggested having her tonsils removed. So we went ahead with the surgery and I am glad she had it done. She no longer has a problem with it and she felt sooo much better after having it done. Sounds like your baby is headed in the same direction. I would get her tonsils removed, she will feel much better and it is better than being put on medication all the time or trying out new vitamins or herbs. It is a minor surgery. Trixie was up and bouncing around the second day, although they do have a few restrictions for a week. But she was great with the surgery and had no complications at all. The vet said tonsilitis is alot more common then we think and had preformed the surgery many times. In fact there was a lady there picking up her toy poodle who just had it done as well. Good luck with whatever you decide!! I hope your baby feels better soon!!

| Thanks for the info. When she finishes her vitamin "elixer" I will take her back and discuss allergy testing and tonsillectomy with the vet. She seems to feel just fine, the only problem I note is that she sometimes licks and licks her lips like possibly she has a bad taste in her mouth, and her breath smells really, really bad, which I am sure is from the tonsillitis because I keep her teeth really clean. That's why instead of continuing to have her try all these different brands of food, because some just make her throw up a few min after eating. I am going to allergy test both my dogs. It is just a simple blood test.

| My yorkie girl gets tonsillitis about 2 times a year. She is 3 1/2 years old. My vet did not seem to think being on antibiotics a couple times a year was a problem. I am hesitant to have her tonsils removed because I do believe that each of our body parts has a purpose and the tonsils are important in the immune system. My vet can also see her tonsils stick out of the throat and I guess that if they are not infected they stay in their pockets and are not too visible. When Lulu is getting tonsilitis she vomits and coughs more than normal and I am just real good and seeing the warning signs and taking her in for medicine. |

| Thanks for the information. Emmie vomited with her first bout of tonsillitis a couple of years ago but this time she has not, however, she has had the "honking" sound which I think is similar to the collapsing trachea sound they make. She really only usually does it when she is excited, so I try to keep her as calm as possible. I think the vet is concerned about loading her up on antibiotics for this one bout of tonsillitis - it probably wouldn't be so bad for her if the tonsils only flared up a few times a year, but since this has been an ongoing problem for a couple of months now, and she has been on 2 different antibiotics, I think he is worried about messing up her system. I am in hopes that she doesn't have to have them out. I did finally have mine out when I was 24 after years and years and years of horrible throat infections, antibiotics injections and medications. So far, no problem with my immune system and I have been so much more healthy - the same with my boys - they had theirs out at about 2 years of age, after they had each had several bouts of it - but I agree, if you don't need them out, you shouldn't do it!!!! I felt of her throat area today and the nodes do seem to have gone done part way, so here's hoping!!!!! Thanks again! Barbara
