Unhappy Trifexis

Ok, my previous posts about Huey never having any trouble with Trifexis...I take it all back. Yesterday he received his regular monthly dose. He has been on this for at least 2 years. During the night he left the bed and went to lay on his crate, which is very unusual for him. This morning, he is unsteady, falls over when just standing in one place and vomited once. He acts like he has really bad vertigo. He has done this 2 times in the past. Once exactly 1 year ago and once last March. Both times we went to the vet, got labs done and was pronounced healthy but that he might have had a seizure and we were seeing the "post-ictal" phase. I don't have any idea if these previous 2 episodes correlated with his dose of trifexis. This time, I am positive, since he got his dose yesterday and today is sick. Both other times he recovered completely without any intervention within 24 hours. Today, we have to go out of town (just 1.5hr away) for 8 or 9 hours. He was going to go with us, but it is on a twisty turny mountain road where he always vomits one time on the trip, and if he has vertigo, it would be cruel to take him on this car trip. Also, there will be many, many people here (it is my grandmother's 90th birthday, so not only tons of people, but something I can't get out of) and I think the overstimulation would be bad since he doesn't get out much ordinarily. He ate both meals yesterday and has peed and pooped this morning. He hasn't eaten this morning, but if I were dizzy and nauseous, I wouldn't eat, either. He is drinking water. If he is still puny this evening when we get home, I will take him to the vet Saturday am for labs. If the Trifexis is to blame, nothing will show up on labs this soon, anyway. I have decided that he will never get Trifexis again, just in case.
We really debated about leaving him alone today, but it was kinder to leave him than to take him. My dh has freaked me out when he asked "what if he dies while we are gone?" Obviously, if I thought he was that sick, I would have driven him to the vet and left him there while we are gone, and I hope I don't regret not doing that, but he has done this twice before and this time he doesn't look as bad as he did the previous 2 times. He actually looks fine except for the dizziness. Please keep Huey in your thoughts today as I am going to be a total wreck until we get back home this afternoon.

Doing some research as we drive down the road, it looks like I am gonna switch him to Sentinal. He used to be on Program for flea control without any oroblems and Sentinal I s the same as Program Plus, which uses the same heartworm medicine as Trifexis but a different flea med. We really haven't ever had a flea problem, in face we have never seen a flea on Huey in almost 5 years, but I have always treated him just in case. I refuse to use a topical since I bathe him so often and they make the fur so greasy. I just pray that he sleeps the day away and feels better when we get home. I'm still gonna take him for labs in the morning, whether he is better or not, I have decided, just to beon the safe side.

Has he jad bile acids checked?

This likely isn't vertigo. Sounds very neurological. Pups shouldn't be left alone with these symptoms.

I'm sorry.

Both of mine are on Trifexis. I give them half of the medication on the first day of the month and the other half on the second day. Now I'm worried. Piper has been on it for at least 3 years. Jilly has been on it at least a year. Must see my vet. They could not tolerate the whole dosage. My vet said to give one half on first day of month then second half. They have not thrown up since. Piper weighs six pounds and Jilly is five.

I agree that it could be neurological because that is what I thought the last 2 times this happened. Both times before it completely resolved within 24hr and all labs were normal. The vet did not recommend a CT scan at that point since it did resolve quickly and completely. If there was any way that I wouldn't have had to leave him, I wouldn't have, other than dropping him off at the vet before we left, but honestly, I didn't think about that until we had left. I was planning to bring him on this day trip, but think that would have done more harm than good. In his home environment, he will most likely sleep all day until we get home.

Ok, I have worried myself to the point ot tears so have now left my grandmother's birthday party to drive the 1.5 hour home to check on Huey and get him to the vet before they close at 5pm. It's gonna be close, but I am worried sick. Leaving him today was NOT what I wanted to do. I have also decided that I am going to invest in a web cam so any time he has to be alone, I can check on him, sick or well.

I hope Huey will be ok. Turbo had a bad reaction to sentinel, it gave him diarrhea, vet prescribed RX clay.

Well, we raced home from Canton, me in tears, worried to death about what we would find, thanks to dh saying "what if he dies when we aren't there". Got home to find...a perfectly normal-acting dog. Steady gait, jumping around without any problem, stands still, steady as a rock. Good, normal colored pee, went outside & had a perfectly normal poo. He smells like a vomit factory and still hasn't eaten his kibble, but he is drinking water and ate a treat. Talked to the vet, no reason to come in unless he starts to act funny again, since we have already worked this up 2 times before in the last year. Have the emergency vet in Chattanooga programmed into my phone, just in case. Washed his vomit-face and he acted normal with this (snarling beast) and now he is brushing his teeth.
I'm sorry to hear Turbo had a reaction to Sentinal. I guess no matter what I choose, someone will have had a bad experience, but after reading up on Sentinal vs. Trifexis, it seems like Sentinal has a better rating and fewer side effects. I think the Spinosad is much more toxic than the Lufenuron, since they both contain Milbemycin for heartworm prevention. Sentinal can be used on dogs weighing as little as 2 lbs whereas for Trifexis, the dog must be 5lbs or more. Before we went to Trifexis, I had Huey on Milbemycin for heartworm and on Program for flea prevention (which is Lufenuron). I may go back to 2 seperate pills, given 2 weeks apart, just on general principal, cost be damned. My baby's health is worth spending any amount of money. Anyway, he seems fine now and no more Trifexis for him.

Yes, sentinel has little to no side effects, it's very safe. I should've added that Turbo was special...Leave it up to him to have a reaction to something that hardly any other dog has a reaction to, I think it's less than 10%?

So glad that Huey is doing well. I know too well, that stinky acid vomit smell loll.

I didn't get a chance to read your prior thread, but I can tell you that both of my boys were on sentinel this summer and neither had any noticeable side effects. I will tell you though, that I have battled with fleas EVERY time I use it....so I started using Frontline with it and the fleas were still hard to get rid of.

Prior to the sentinel, they were on Revolution and had no problems. 1 month after being on the Sentinel and I got fleas. I will be returning to the Revolution next spring. It's more expensive and it's a topical, but with all of the money I've spent on fighting the fleas, it will probably be cheaper in the end.

My boys are both VERY allergic to fleas. If they get one on them, they go nuts!!

My mom uses another brand (I want to say Advantage Multi) and it's got both the flea and heartworm prevention in there and she said she really likes that. I am not sure if it's topical or a pill.

We switched from Trifexis to Advantage Multi, a topical, about 6 months ago. P-nut had been going through horrible spells of vomiting and diarrhea that ended up in vet visits at least monthly. Poor guy, he was really going through it and it would have been very costly if we didn't have insurance. This wasn't happening right after I gave him his dose of Trifexis, so I didn't connect it at first. But, after reading about issues with Trifexis, I decided to take him off of it, we'd tried everything else - grain free food, etc. etc. We've had no digestive issues at all since we switched!! Yay!!!

Just seeing this, I'm so sorry you and Huey went through this. I'm sure seeing Huey unsteady and possibly having a seizure must have been terrifying!:
I was almost afraid to read past your first post but I did, and I'm happy to see Huey's okay.
Yazmin's been taking Trifexes for a year with no problems but I'm always worrying about her health because of all the side effects of this medication.
My vet suggested I give her half of the tablet one day and the other half on the second day because of the horrible reaction she had when I tried the Advantage Multi last year.
Thank you for posting about Huey's experience with Trifexis. After reading what he's gone through; I'll be doing more research on Sentinel.
