| itchy Yorkie My four year old Yorkie seems to be itchy just about all over. His skin is clear, no red skin or lumps, no fleas. He just seems itchy, especially at night. He has been eating the same food for a while now, it is the only kibble he will eat, Royal Canine small adult dog food. I washed him last night with tea tree oil shampoo, but it does not seem to have helped. He has his annual vet appointment on November 5 and he is eating and everything else is normal. Any ideas? |

| How long has it been going on? Could be an allergy to his food - I think Royal Canin has a grain-free food that might help? A vet visit before the 5th would be a good idea. Ask about Benadryl for the itching, and they should do a skin scraping as well. Hope your little guy finds relief soon.

YT 2000 Club Member | dog I would change dog food gradually. I had an itchy poodle and the derm dr. said put her on a venison base food and she cleared up. Lots of times it is the food. R.C. does have ingredients that your Yorkie may be allergic to. Get a hyper allergenic shampoo and conditioner. I use Hy-lyte I get from my vet. Excellent stuff. I hope your Yorkie gets better soon. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Since you're in FL, it could easily be allergies with the pollens. Does he lick or chew his paws?

| Thank you all for your replies! We have an answer! he is allergic to the Royal Canine Yorkshire Terrier 28 food, its recommended for skin and coat. There must be something in there that does not agree with him. He was itchy and scratching all the time. Because it was a relatively new addition to his diet, it was not terribly difficult to work out the problem. He has not been allergic to any food prior to this. |

YorkieTalk Newbie! | My little yorkie, Savannah, has little brown patches on her skin here and there and she is scratching a lot - especially around her ears, under her neck and behind her front legs. I bathe her with prescription shampoo and put prescription 'leave on lotion' afterward. I make her dogfood - turkey with oatmeal and a healthy powder mix from health food store products as well as vitamin drops. I dehydrate her treats which I make from turkey breast and ground turkey. She also eats dry 'Wellness" grain-free food which I leave out in a bowl. I removed all beef from her diet and then all chicken. She's still itchy. I tried fish oil but it caused diarrhea. I hate to see her so miserable especially when she wakes up at night scratching. I brush her gently when she starts and it gives her great relief. Any suggestions? |

| Itchy Are the brown bits scabs? My Yorkie was really scratching and biting at the area just above his tail, about two years ago. I looked and saw little scabs and thought it was flea bites. I was in Scotland at the time and the weather was mild. The vet looked and did not see any fleas so he prescribed an anti itch soap because everything else looked fine. I found out later on the UK Yorkie sight that some dogs do this scratching at the base of their tail if their anal glands are bothering them. So I checked and sure enough a bunch of fluid came out. He was fine after that and the scabbing soon went away because he had being causing it himself. This last episode was different, he was itchy in lots of places and especially scratchy when we came to bed at night. I am so glad that it was the food and that we found out before putting him through loads of tests etc. |

| Our Laddy was having these issues also but we found a great conditioner called GNC medicated conditioner and also LadyJane had posted about a half and half vinegar and water mixture poured on and rubbed in then left on them helping. Between the two he has stopped the scratching.

YT 2000 Club Member | dog I would bet that itching is from the turkey. I am so glad you tried the venison. I spent over $1 ,000 at a dermatologist for dogs to find out that it was her food. Go back to the venison if they itch, they will be more comfortable. I used Natures Recipe Venison but I do not like that metadione sulfate stuff in that food. I would get another venison base food if you switch. |
