drops for cataracts? My foster Sophie, is a sweet little 5 year old.puppy mill surviver. Unfortunately she has a pretty bad cataract in the left eye and now her right eye seems to be getting cloudy. I would love to have surgery for her but our rescue doesn't have that kind of money. I've been a nurse for many years but haven't touched an adult in 25+ years so remember little about cataracts. I have read that it can become very painful and result in the removal of the eye. I would also like to preserve the sight in her remaining eye. Yesterday one of the bet techs gave me the name of an eye drop, ocuv? The vet said it has very good results. The tech said its expensive but it works. The vial of drops is $160, which I can probably do for a while, but if I can get the name and it is also a human med I can get a doc at work to write a prescription and only pay $5, my copayment. So the point of my rambling is does anyone know the medicine she is talking about? Do you have any experience with it?I'm working this weekend and would like to get it started as soon as possible instead of waiting until monday at the vets, not to mention saving a lot of money, since I think this will be a lifetime med. Thanks

Sophie So sorry to hear about her cataracts. The surgery can be expensive and require intense post op care, but is very successful. It is much more complex for a dog than a human and the chance of inflammation can be a risk even after the surgery. It cost me around $3,500 per eye, so I can imagine that is hard for a rescue org to come up with that kind of money. I have heard of the supplement but only the vet would know if it would help in your case, and you said he was optimistic. Praying that is so. It was never given as an option to me. When my dog had cataracts the vet said one main risk was glaucoma, that can cause pain and if not treated, loss of eye. Also the eyes can get uveitis. As my dog was only 1.5 years old I decided to do the surgery. He is fine now. I was told that cataracts in dogs often goes along with Diabetes, but luckily my boy did not have that. It must have been genetic. From my (non vet!!) experience it would seem that the 2 risks, glaucoma and uveitis, could be managed with eye drops and monitoring of eye pressures and eye health. Unless of course the supplement drops you mention do in fact take care of the cataracts. Good Luck and prayers, and please keep us updated on the status of little Sophie.

I have researched this issue....I have bought an eye drop from Switzerland at over 300.00/vial, and did not see any change or improvment in my dogs cataracts. I have found tons of articles on "effective eye drops" for cataracts....and I have found just as many articles on how eye drops for cataracts are useless. Surgery is the only answer. I have not used the drops below....I may try them just to see.... "Can-C Eye Drops – Effective Cataract Treatment" Document Transcript " 1. Can-C Eye Drops – Effective Cataract TreatmentAccording to the latest scientific findings, Can-C has been proven to control and inmany cases reverse the eye disorder known as cataract, more effectively than othertreatments. Created by Innovative Vision Products, it contains a special type of N-acetylcarnosine (NAC) and its parent compound, carnosine, which is actually found inthe body and essential for preventing cataract and other diseases. What is NAC?N-Acetylcarnosine is a molecule that has been scientifically proven to not just treatcataract but other disorders brought about by aging. At the same time, it also functionsas an antioxidant and removes toxins in the body. It is true that carnosine can be foundin the human body, but as you get older, the compound slowly dissipates, and this isone of the reasons why cataract develops in the first place.Read more information on this website. If cataract is not treated, your vision will become blurred and diminished and could leadto blindness if not managed properly. But instead of resorting to expensive and riskysurgery, you now have the option of using Can-C eyedrops as it is just as effective butdoesn’t carry the risk or price tag.The Eyedrops in DetailBy using the eyedrops according to the instructions, you replace the missing carnosinein your eyes, treating your cataract naturally. Since it is available as an eyedrop, thereintroduction of carnosine is direct and immediate, allowing your eyes to quicklyabsorb it. Another reason why absorption is possible has to do with the fact that the N-acetyl component is soluble. 2. When N-acetylcarnosine gets into your eye cells, the essential compounds are released, producing the vital antioxidants your eyes need, and minus the side effects that comewith other cataract medications and surgery. And for those who have never tried thisproduct before, it has been subjected to numerous scientific studies, including severaltop Russian researchers. After numerous scientific tests, it has been shown that these eyedrops do indeedpossess antioxidant properties and have also been proven effective for cataract reversalnot just in humans but also in dogs. Furthermore, clinical tests have shown that peopleafflicted with cataract for several years who used the eyedrops reported vastimprovements, something that similar products have not been able to reproduce. If you want to know more about canC please go to www.can-c.biz - Dynadot Parking, a websitethat sells the product at an affordable price. In addition, the website provides in-depthinformation about Dry Eye Syndrome (DES), cataract and more. "

| I adopted a little 11 year old Papillon that was totally blind with cataracts. We took her to the eye surgeon for evaluation and she passed, so she had new lens put in both eyes. It was wonderful to see two big brown eyes looking directly at me rather than two white eyes not seeing a thing. I highly recommend either having her operated on or find someone who would take her and spend the money. Don't let her stay in pain. No eye drop can correct cataracts, but may help with pain. The expensive drops you want to spend could go toward surgery instead.

I really do wish there were drops that were effective...there are many seniors that, for whatever reason, are not able to have the surgery because of co-morbidities that prevent them from having anesthesia, etc.....

| My vet recommend a product called Eye D’Clare II. http://www.life-enhancement.com/prod...p?SID=1&id=362 He claimed it is suppose to help reduce cataracts but it does not mention that in the description. He said it is good for dogs and people. He uses it. I had forgot all about it until I read this thread. I need to order some for my eyes. I have dry eye or something going on. I get really bad pains in my eyes at night when I am sleeping.

sorry it took so long but I found the medication. Its called ocluvet. they have done a few small multifacility testings with good results. I did order it and expect it this week. I'll let you know how it works, although it takes a few months for the results to show. It is also more affordable if bought online. I was considering the can-c but this has basically the same ingredients with another antioxidents. It's worth a shot, and my vet likes it. He's helped me a lot with my dogs and my fosters.

Praying that it works for you. But I hope the vet will monitor for glaucoma and other eye diseases and treat those as well if necessary. Also, did you get a Diabetes test? So sorry you are having to deal with this.

She's been cleared from diabetes and we are monitering for glaucoma. The vets seem to think that it was either juvenille cataract or trauma but since both eyes are affected, although the left is just now starting to show signs they think it is genetic. But some of the lierature I've read says that poor nutrition can contribute to cataract formation. Not enough antioxidents possibly? Right now she's getting vitamin supplements and I've switched her from organix to canine caviare. She also gets the cc synergy supplements.

Cataracts Thanks for the update. I am so happy there was no diabetes and that the glaucoma is also monitored. My vet thought it was genetic in my dog's case as he was so young. I don't know about the diet idea but it is good to give the right food. I too feed Canine Caviar and my dog does very well on it. Good luck with the new drops, it is worth a try as the alternative is hard. Please let us know how they are working. Always good to learn new things.

Sophie is also a rather goofy looking red legged yorkie. I have read quite a bit about them but haven't been able to find out if there are health problems associated with it like with the blue born. Whats interesting is that most of the articles on google and bing direct me back to yorkietalk. Apparently they know where the experts are.
