| Lexie's Thread: Pain and Collapse Unknown Reasons Hi All, Lexie is in great hands, but the Vet (Katonah Bedford Veterinary Center) and I are at a loss. Here is the facts: Age: 6 yrs (8/23/2008) Weight: 7lbs. Mood: Hyper (Lots of Energy) History: Mange Hospitalized numerous times for stomach problems w/bloody stool Is on Tylan Powder 1x daily No Children or Large pets in her immediate environment Had 3 tick bites in the past month. (Blood Test Run for Lyme's- Negative) Lexie is generally happy, loves to run around the yard, gets over excited when someone comes home, loves car rides, bike rides and chasing animals. She is always Alpha Dog to other dogs, Beta dog to Mommy and I. Problem: (Sunday) After spending a few hours in the car with me we arrived at our destination. Placing Lexie on the ground, she walked over to the grass and fell over. Just laid there for a few minutes. Since it was really hot, I though that she was just lying in the cool grass in the shade. I brought her into the house while I worked. (FYI: There is always food and water in the car with us at her disposal) Hours later, upon leaving, she would not move. I picked her up in my hands and when I put her down, she stayed in the exact position...just frozen. Eventually she SLOWLY walked to the car and got in. Brought her to the vet, blood was taken and everything came back fine. One hour she will be herself, the next, she looks like the saddest thing you ever saw. She does not move and looks as if she can not stand up, more or even pick up her head. Today, while she was going for a walk, she started to cry, not a yelp but a cry. Brought her to the vet and again, they can not find anything. They checked every joint and her flexibility. She didn't cry, yep or hesitate. We get back home and she has a normal bowel movement and then takes two steps and falls over. We let her rest and she gets up, walks some more and lies down. None of us know what else to do? I am thinking of having an MRI done, but as we know, the anesthesia can be very dangerous especially to small dogs. Given her previous problems, actions and history. I think she is predisposed for a liver shunt, but could this be a sign of that? Anyone with any clues, please feel free to post. If you have personally gone through this (not a sick pet, but this problem) please feel free to call me. 845-462-8400 EST Thanks to All. |

| I wanted to reitterate that this is NOT ongoing, but its coming and going. One hour she is fine being her typical self, the next she is not, then she goes back to being fine. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am so sorry she is sick. I have dealt a lot with sick yorkies but have not had an experience with these symptoms. I would think with liver issues she would most likely have elevated lab results. Have they done any testing on her heart, like an EKG? I hope someone else can give some insight on this. I have on several occassions taken my girls to a specialty clinic as they sometimes have more experience with unusual symptoms. I will keep her in my prayers.

| Katonah Bedford Vet Center Katonah Bedford Veterinary Center - The largest and best-equipped emergency and veterinary specialty center and animal hospital in Westchester County is as special as they can get. She is there because of the earlier problems. No doubt they saved her a few times already. This just has us all stumped. They did not do an EKG, but did listed to her heart and it sounded normal. With her crying sometimes, it tells me Pain and I don't think that is typical of the heart issues. The ER Doctor though it could be a disc, but she revealed no pain during the exam. I am really leaning toward that though as I have 2 bad disc's and one day I am fine and then next I can not walk. Anyone else have a dog with a bad back? |

| I would have your vet check her Liver. Sounds just like my Manolo and he has been diagnosed with MVD. A full blood panel. I would also have them do a BAT TEST(Bile Acid Test). You will need to fast Lexi for 10 hours. Pull food around 6pm. They will take her blood first thing in the morning then feed her a High Protein Meal and take her blood after that. This will give Pre and Post results. Im not sure this is Lexis problem but its a start. Protein triggers liver issues in Yorkies, and the symtoms you are discribing match liver issues. Please let us know. There are so many people on YT that will be able to suggest their thoughts. |

| It wouldn't hurt to check for a liver shunt but please take your Yorkie to an internist. Obviously something is very wrong and they will be more likely to be able to help you.

| I'm so sorry for beautiful Lex! I looked through your albums and I feel like I know her. She is a little doll! I hope and pray that they figure this out and the other posters gave some really good suggestions. Personally, I know that it is a great hospital....but I would go to another excellent vet and get another opinion. Maybe that might help. |

| did I read correctly and this only started after a long car ride? is there a chance it's an inner ear problem? something having to do with her equilibrium? |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | It sounds like she is being cared for by a great vet. Have they done any Xrays of her spine. I had a Yorkie years ago who acted like he had a stroke, he wouldn't lift his head and moved very gingerly, He was diagnosed with a herniated disc. A round of steroids helped a lot. Cali has spondylosis and disc narrowing that was diagnosed by abdominal xrays that they opened the collimator on to catch the spine (that's what the ER report said). So maybe xrays will give you some clues if they haven't done them already. Just trying to throw some ideas out there.

| They have her on pain meds to see if that helps, but the problem with those is that it makes the dog sleepy, so we can't tell if shes better or worse. They didn't x-ray her yet, but the exam should have revealed pain in the back when the ER Doctor manipulated her body. Reason I am leaning away from the Liver Shunt is the pain she is in. That would be unusual for a Liver Shunt, No? They ran an in depth analysis on the blood including dna for the Lyme's. She is perfectly hydrated, eating fine and shows no signs of pain during what is now her third exam. If she is not better in a couple of days on the meds, I am going to order the MRI. Thanks for all the suggestions. Keep them coming. You guys are great! |
