| Horror!!! I was going through a dog forum from Malaysia today and I have found this news which I am totally disgusted. http://www.puppy.com.my/cgi-bin/foru...=unread#unread I will cut and past the whole story here:- Sin Chew Daily on 04.09.2007? (translation): Title: Catch More Than 150 Dogs In 6 Months & Win More Than RM10000 1. Ceremony officiated by Dato Tang See Hang. 2. Majlis Perbandaran Selayang (MPS) receives more than 80 complaints about stray dogs. MPS and the residents decided to work together to catch the stray dogs. This is the first time a local council has had a competition to catch stray dogs. MPS says they managed to catch 200 dogs every month, but the problem is not solved. 3. Starts at 2pm today, every 6 months they will give out the prizes. 4. The winner will receive RM15000, if the resident manages 150 or more dogs in 6 months. First runner-up RM13000. Second runner-up RM11000. 5. If cannot catch 150 or more, you can still win RM2000. Every dog = RM20. 6. ONLY for Selayang residents. 7. You have to take the picture, and call MPS 03-61204853 / 012-2701614 to come and pick up the dog. 8. All the stray dogs will be kept in the pound for two weeks. If not claimed, they will be put to sleep. 9. Surf www.mps.gov.my for more. -Edit- I am so mad I forgot to post that what kind of people will turn a dog catching/killing massacre into a competition???? What the heck!

Seems like the dogs are not someone's pets, more like wild dogs if they are attacking people. In which case it would make a little more sense--looking at some random sites, seems like the dogs are actually dangerous and that it is a HUGE problem. http://story.malaysiasun.com/index.p...d/240409/cs/1/ Last edited by BamaFan121s; 09-06-2007 at 01:22 PM.

| As is with most third world countries, they do have stray dogs but they are far from being dangerous. Most of these dogs are so badly treated that they stay far away from people. They usually live on their own with the help of some volunteers that will catch them and neuter them and release them back to the streets because going to the shelter is a 100% death sentence to them. They also rely on the good hearted people from the public to feed them. It would do more good for them to use the money for catching/neutering than encouraging people to catch them in a way that usually is cruel and inhumane.

The people ARE encouraged to catch them in a humane way. They actually don't get paid anything and face penalties if the dogs are dead or with fresh injury when brought in. This is part of a 10 year plan to reduce the number of stray dog and pressure owners into being responsible for their pets.

Donating YT 11K Club Member | That is so messed up and sad! There are many many stray dogs in Puerto Rico but the ones that i have always seen are friendly, always wagging their tails. And beautiful too, i have seen from Siberian Huskys with beautiful colored eyes to little Chihuahuas running around on the beach looking for food. I think people feed them, I certainly do. I can't help not to, there are so many. Sometimes if you're driving somewhere you will find a couple mating in the middle of the street and you have to honk your horn for them to move, that is why there are so many, and most are mixed. Some people also leave food infront of their homes and the same stray dog will come everyday and visit them, of course for food lol but atleast it's something. My grandma has taken in a couple of dogs over the yrs when she lived there but some have gotten loose. I even remember seeing some breeds that I don't even know the name of, and they are tiny tiny.

However, seems to me like rabies and disease are reason enough to take a more proactive approach towards correcting the problem. Since you are from there, what alternatives do you think would work?

| Just an update since I started a thread. The competition has been scrapped on Sept 15th , after coming under heavy fire from animal rights groups such as the SPCA, ROAR, PETPOSTITIVE, MARPO and CALM. Malaysia might not be rabies free but it is not rampant with it-there is a better way to do this than having a competition and treating it like a fun sports thing. Catching the dog alive doesn't mean the dog is caught in a good shape, a battered half dead dog can also mean alive. This type of competition is just pointless as it will mean more pet dogs will be stolen in exchange of the money the government offers and that was what exactly have happened over the past few days.
