| Hysterectomy Advice I think I've talked about this before but I'm getting really nervous and I just want to know what to expect. For anyone who has had a hysterectomy, can you tell me what to expect as far as pain and recovery. They are not sure if they are going to be able to do it laporoscoply (not sure on that spelling) or the full abdonminal as I have had 2 c-sections and had my gall bladder out and my one big worry is if they do the full abdominal hysterectomy, do they use a drain? I had that with my gall bladder and that was the worst! Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks, Theresa |

| they did mine vaginally. Recovery time was great as far as pain. But I couldn't believe how tired I was. Do what the dr. says as far as driving and resting.........I didn't. I decided I knew more than he did Drove myself to the mall one time and then sat in the food court for 2 hours deciding how I was going to get home Also went back to work after 4 weeks....big mistake. It really took me about 6 months to totally feel better because I didn't follow directions. Good luck

| Actually, I felt better than I had in YEARS after mine. I was also prepared. I researched and learned all I could first. A great resource is a site called www.hystersisters.com It has everything you ever wanted to know and a lot you didn't! lol

| I agree ... do exactly what the doctor says. It makes a huge difference. Remain aware of how much things weigh. I had a lifting limit that I broke regularly without thinking about it. For example, a full laundry basket weighs more than five pounds! lol Go figure! Also, I had the full abdominal surgery, but it turned out great for me. My last child was an emergency C-section with a botched scar. She repaired that scar for me when she did my hysterectomy. I did have a drain though, but it wasn't too bad.

| I had a hysterectomy when I was 32. I had suffered with endometriosis since I started my period at age 12. Best thing I have ever done. Hubby was very supportive and afterwards commented on how much better I was feeling. I had mine done vag. with a bladder repair. I kept both ovaries at the time & two years ago had to go back and have my right one removed. I took 6 weeks off. Listen to your Dr about what you can and can't do. I stocked my freezer with easy to make and cooked several home made meals before surgery. I taught my kids (7 & 9 at the time) to do laundry, or at least carry the laundry to and from the machines for me and to vacuum (The Dr said that was a huge no-no). My Dr was very adamant about not carrying anything for 6 weeks heavier then a milk jug or I could ruin all his work and have to have surgery again. Best Wishes to you, you will feel so much better and the added benefit is no more periods...

| I had to have mine when I was 32. It was done vaginally with bladder repair and I only spent 3 days in the hospital. I had uterine prolaspe (sp). Recovery was pretty fast, but you do need to do as your doctor instructs you. I felt so much better after about 6 weeks. In two years I begin to have ovarian cysts. I had a laproscopic to rupture the cyst. In 6 months the cysts returned. My husband, and I along with the doctor made the decision to have both ovaries and tubes removed. Now that was a tough abdominal surgery with a weeks stay in the hospital. Just be sure to take it easy and get lot of rest. Good luck!

| I had mine at age 42 and I felt SO much better! Are they taking your ovaries, too? I had everything out plus a bladder suspension. I have taken a tiny dose of estrogen for the last 8 years and I'm doing great. Like everybody said, listen to your doctor and take it easy. Don't forget the hystersisters site, it's great!! Good luck!

| I had a hysterectomy last March. I had had 4 c-sections so they did it were my scare was. I went home 3 days after and had no help with my 4 kids. Even though I wasn't suppose to lift or do to much I had no choice. I healed really nicely. I think it was simialr to my c-section pain wise. It was so simialr that if they'd given me a baby to take home it would have been the same. Good luck with your surgery. Just follow doctors orders and you'll be fine.

| I was 36 when I had to have mine done. Endometriosis had claimed all of my girlie parts and I was to the point where I was in pain not only for my period, but ALL month long. I spent the last month before my surgery in excrutiating pain I felt better immediately after the surgery, but I had to be cut from my navel to the pubic bone since the doc wasn't absolutely sure what was going on in there, the ultrasound and MRI just showed this huge mass in there, and there was talk of cancer. Fortunately, it was just endo. Ask your doc about the bladder sling. I didn't know about that at the time of my surgery and now I have leakage issues, sneezing, coughing, and laughing too hard can result in me having to change my pants these days Also, ask about hormone replacement therapy. They now have biologically identical hormones that are supposed to be much more effective and have fewer side effects Good luck and make sure that you rest for the full recovery period, you might think that you feel better, but if you over do it, you will be hurtin' for certain!
