Default Sick & Tired of Hearing That..

....dogs will not go potty where they sleep.

I recently adopted a retired female breeder & show biewer but it has been over 2 months now. She got spayed 2 weeks ago and is doing great. She knows the routine, but, she has just been recently pooping and peeing in her crate. The funny part is, it's not at night when she is confined for 6-8hrs. I let them both out around 10pm and they both go all night with no issues. JB has free roam of the bedroom but she does not. Her crate is dry when I get up. In the morning, they are let out around 6am, fed and then let out again around 8am before I go to work. I come home 4 hours later on lunch and her towel is wet with urine and dried poop. Sorry, but this makes no sense to me.

If any of you have answers, please share!

I think it's true that most animals including dogs would prefer not to soil their sleeping area. She may have been confined by her previous owner for a longer period of time during the day and was not able to hold it that long and just became conditioned to it. Maybe an x-pen large enough to have her bed and piddle pad would work better for her.

Could be that having been a breeding dog and recently spayed, she might need more frequent potty breaks during daytime hours.

Was she strictly outdoor trained at the breeder's home, or did she maybe have free access to a pad? That could make a difference too.

One other possibility, if this is happening only during the day and when you are gone, could be separation anxiety.

My 3 year old boy does this constantly. He is mostly potty trained, just him peeing on his blankets stops him from being fully trained. He has to pee on every blanket that I lay down for the both of them to lay on. He then will go and lay on his messy blanket afterward. I can't have dog beds anymore because i had to wash them so many times they fell apart. When he was still using peepads he would go on both the pads and on his blanket. If I have his kennel closed he will pee on the door of it. And he does it during the day not at night. Drives me up the wall!

I would be using a belly band on him! Is he neutered? If not, or if you did not have him neutered until he was sexually matured around 8 months of age, he is just doing what male dogs do....he is claiming his property! Put a belly band on him! I use a particular menstrual pad in my belly bands, and it keeps my males dry for at least 10-12 hours....I needed something for when I was working and the incontinent pads I use are fabulous.

Default Houdini..

There were 2 times where I let both my female and JB out lose in the kitchen while I was at work for my AM shift (JB always has free roam with pads). The first time, I came home to find the gate knocked down and Carrie on the couch. Sounds funny but had to walk the whole house (which is carpeted except for the kitchen and bathrooms) to find where she peed and then cleaned it up. I looked at my bed and saw that she was on there cause of the indentation on the pillows. Didn't think anything of it but when me and hubby went to bed, there it was! A huge wet spot where she peed on the bed. I was furious! Second time I tried the free-roam of the kitchen, I came home and found her and JB ok in the kitchen with gates still intact. But then, what is REALLY WEIRD, is that I walked on the living room side of the gate and there was Carrie's poop in the living room. Now how the heck did she poop in the living room and then get back into the kitchen? I discussed this with the breeder where I got her from and she said there is NO WAY that a dog would get out of a confined area and then go back in. Once they are out, they are out. So I guess I am the one going crazy trying to find out where that poop came from or my female is Houdini.

I have the day off today so I am going to try this free roam thing again with both of them in the kitchen. The breeder had her and a couple other females have free roam and Carrie was using the newspaper but the room she had them in had a door. Big difference right there! I am going to put down newspaper and pads and see what happens. If she gets out again then I will be at a loss. I showed the breeder the gates I use and they are 3ft tall. Carrie is a jumper but having linoleum floors, they slide on it so no way she could get good footing to jump. It's just that the last incident has me baffled and scratching my head.

Thank you
I do use belly bands. He hates them and it helps but when I think he has learned not to potty on his blankets he'll start it up again. I try to use them whenever he has free roam at home but he has learned to get out of them and when that doesn't work he will just pee in them so I have to take them off. He's a diabolical genius. He is neutered. I got him neutered pretty early I know before he turned a year old, I don't remember exactly when.

Sounds like she's always up to no good in the neighborhood! (sorry, dunno why I am referencing Fresh Prince theme song)

Have you had a chance to spend time with her after work for training sessions? Her jumping/pee/poop behaviour might stop if she's getting some training attention from you.

I can't imagine how furious I'd be if I came home and my little ones jumped the gate and peed in my bed! OMG! At least she's sleeping well and not keeping you up through the night! Happy for you for that part.

I've heard that some Yorkies can jump and/or climb over gates. If she's bored and doing her wild-child act, being in a new place and all, I wouldn't be surprised that that's how the poop got over the gate and then she went back afterwards. Both of my Yorkies can jump! Actually before bringing Scottie home, my breeder told me he had jumped a gate already and told me to be careful. When Casie first joined us at 3.5 pounds, I witnessed her jumping up onto her 2' crate. She was so determined! I used large moving boxes and stacked them up. After some time, she stopped.

Since yours seems to like jumping too, I would try to Yorkie-proof it; they can be such sneaky little devils! Do you have some things like big boxes around the house you can stack up for a higher, solid wall? You might have to do something like that for a while to deter her from doing this. One, for the potty training period, and two you don't want her to hurt herself from all this mischievous jumping!

Do you leave them with toys inside the kitchen? Have you tried treat dispensing toys? Those are great to refocus their attention away from all the escaping. I used to leave Scottie with a treat dispensing toy each time I left, so he has always been excited while in a super calm manner when I left (he had to lie down in his crate and stay until I gave a command for him to get it once I was at the door). Maybe if you associate the kitchen with a treat dispensing toy, she'll like being in the kitchen more? If you wanna try that out, make sure you only give that to her in the kitchen while you're away and no other times.

I don't have experience with this, but my friend is having a similar problem. I might be wrong in her instance, too, but it might be her marking the territory to establish dominance, saying these are hers, with Junebug.

Well, I have had success in trying to keep her in the kitchen so far. Yesterday she had free roam with JB for about 3-3 1/2 hrs and all was good. Today I had to go out for a bit and everything was ok again. Tomorrow I work so we shall see how it all works out.
