| Is my puppy normal? Hi everyone. My baby Logan is 2.5 months old. We've had him for 2 weeks now. During the second week he's turned into a demon puppy. I've had several dogs before raised from puppies but this is my first "small dog" or terrier ever. I'm wondering if this behavior is *normal * for a yorkie puppy his age, or if this will become problematic adult behavior. Basically as of last week he's VERY bitey. We can't even pet him anymore without him trying to gnaw a hand off. Now, he very obviously just playing, and not being vicious but I can only imagine that allowing him to bite hands can't lead to good adult behavior with the teeth. Could he be teething this young? We got him plenty of chew toys but he still loves to bite. The only time we can pet him without him turning it into play, is when he is tired. Which brings me to my next question. He absolutely loves sleeping in my lap on the couch, to the point where he whines for me to pick him up (he's too small to jump up on his own) avnd for course I'm a sucker and I let him up. I'm wondering do you all allow your yorkies on the furniture? Another question I have is when do their ears stand up on their own? I do not want to tape his ears . He is not going to be a stud or show doggy and we will love him with floppy ears just as much as perky ears, I'm just wondering if he's on track or not with that. They *almost *stand up, but they're still floppy lol. And finally, could you all share with me your feeding and "potty" sschedule for your puppies? Thanks for the help! |

YT 1000 Club Member | I'm not completely sure but I've heard some pups ears go down when teething. Rasta's ears stood from when I saw him at 8 weeks til now at 8 months. I never had a nipping problem with him either but I'm sure your little guy could be teething. I allow him on the furniture but only if I'm sitting next to him in case he tries to get down. I free fed him up until about 5 months then divided his meal into 2 portions when he got older. I take him out to potty about 20 mins after he eats, after he plays, and after waking up from nqps. I would love to see pics of your pup! |

| There are 2 reasons why a puppy bites: 1) teething 2) mom never taught him bite inhibition. From what you posted it sounds like your little guy is 10 weeks old, meaning you got him at around 8 weeks right? There is a post somewhere in this vast forum that describe puppy development week by week. It was written by one of the show breeder members YT has to show the importance of a puppy staying with mom a minimum of 12 weeks. During weeks 8-12 mom teaches her litter doggy manners, one being bite inhibition. The litter mates help too. They'll start to play and when one bites too hard, the other puppies or mom will let them know. Seeing as how he's home with you now, you have to play this role. You have to let him know he hurt you, put him in a safe place like a play pen and walk away. It's like trying to let him know he's been a meanie and you don't want to play anymore. I'm sure others will come along with better suggestions. Good luck!

| He sounds absolutely precious and normal! While I can't speak for specifically yorkie puppies, puppies are playful. They experience and learn from feeling with their mouth, at that age, it sounds very normal to me. Lots of time on your lap is a good thing, he's bonding, you are his pack. Being allowed on furniture, kind of depends on what you want later. Ours is allowed and encouraged to join us in our chairs, the couch and our bed. Sometimes he just wants his bed on the floor, he watches us. I've seen others recommend a book on here, "Yorkies for Dummies".... Might be a good thing....to read. |

♥Trained by my pups♥ Donating YT 500 Club Member | Tell him no every time he bites you and give him a toy in place of your hand. I do allow my pets on the furniture. You have to be careful when he is so young jumping they can damage or break there tiny legs ( they think they can do anything) Ears can go up and down during teething. If you don't want to tape ears to stand you can cut the hair on them so they are not so heavy sometimes that's all it takes to make them stand And then some never do. Sounds like to me he is a normal yorkie pup

| Bella was very bitey at that age--I think it's a phase they go through during teething. If Bella bit too hard, I would say "No!" or "Ouch!" and remove my hand and hold the nylabone for her to chew on. Now at one year of age, Bella will occasionally gum my fingers, but I think it's more to get a taste, and she doesn't bite hard at all. Bella's ears went up on their own at 6 to 8 months--no taping. As a small puppy, we never allowed Bella on the furniture until she could get up and down safely on her own. Our floor is carpeted, so she lies on my back or on my pillow when I lie on the floor. That said, I don't think there's anything wrong with letting Logan sleep on your lap providing that you play close attention that he doesn't fall. Bella is potty pad trained. We always have food and water available for her during the day. When she was young, we would take up the food and water an hour before bedtime. She drinks a lot, so she pees about every two hours, and poops maybe every 4 to 6 hours. We potty her just before bedtime. She has to get up once in the middle of the night. We used to set an alarm to make sure we got up and ensure there were no accidents, but now we can hear her whimper to go out in the night. |

♥Trained by my pups♥ Donating YT 500 Club Member | they get baby teeth and then they lose them and get the permanent teeth So teething can last for a little while I think by a year old they have most of there big teeth

Feeding and potting, I've gotten lucky b/c Magnus will hold it till I take him out or is let out. But there were few instances where I've read/heard that you have to figure out his/her schedule vs your own. I also found that they tend to potty faster/sooner after a hard workout or hard play. Both Magnus/Zoey play bite a lot at that age. I think the best method for me was to yell ouch/owww~~~ any time they try to put any of my body part in their mouths. | |
