| ads Obviously, it is not against the law to sell at 6 weeks in Tenn. It is illegal in Md and VA...not sure here in Florida. You might start a petition to change the law...alot of show breeders would sign..and no doubt vets, Humane Soc. etc |

| illegal Yes, it is a state law in Md and VA...no, selling of dogs/cats under the age of 8 weeks. The Washington Post has a disclaimer in the heading to state this..so anyone looking to advertize a pup under 6 weeks will not be able to do so in the newspaper...also a breeder will be fined if a buyer reports them..state law. |

| i think it is illigal in florida i know you can get a health certificate at 8 weeks no earlier and its law if you sell dogs they have to come with a health certificate. so 6 weeks is too young maybe the news paper misprinted them or maybe they put the ad in the paper early so the pups are bought by 8 weeks. hopefully they arent serious. |

| Is this a new law by chance? I have lived in VA my whole life and just heard of this! How bad is that? I also notice in our local papers and online classifieds that there are several pups going for 6 weeks and all.. is it only on certain breeds or all of them? I ask if its a new law also cause Daphne will be 4 in Jan. and we got her when she was 6 weeks old! (back in 2002)

| I am hoping that maybe they are just advertising the current age of 6 weeks and doesn't necessarily mean they will let them go at 6 weeks.

| Just because a lot of people are doing it doesn't mean that it's right. Many studies and just experiences in general have shown that pups kept with the litter until 10-12 weeks have much more well developed social skills and are less prone to behavior problems in the future. Caring breeders don't mind a few more weeks with pups underfoot to insure a bright future for them. |

She was very nice, and always told me if I really wanted him, I would wait until HE was ready. Sometimes, there are reasons to get them sooner. My girlfriend got a puppy at 4 weeks, because his mama died. But the little fella had all kinds of problems. I am so glad I waited, as soon as we got Obie, I took him to the vet. The vet was so impressed by his care. So i was thankful! i will never breed him. I signed a contract stating I could not get his AKC papers until he was neutered. I knew this, and I also knew I would never breed. So this was no problem. She does a great job, and she did keep one of the litter pups for breeding, but she has been doing this for 17 years. Even as a hobby, I couldn't imagine. I watched a video, and oh my. I am a big fan, and if I ever think about getting another one, I will get him from a breeder! | |

Senior Yorkie Talker | I am amazed and horrified! I am horrified by any breeder that would let a pup go at that age. I insist on keeping my pups with mom and siblings for 12 weeks, and here are the reasons. #1 Between the 8th and 12th week are one of the most important times in a pups life. This is when he learns socialization from the litter and mom such as acceptable biting, playing etc. #2 The breeder knows a lot more about the health of the pup by the time they are 12 weeks old and also about the pups personality so they can be honest with the new buyer. I do not even start feeding puppy food mush to my pups until 4 weeks old. I do not take them from mom and let her feed them also until she turns them down. I have had mothers still feed pups on and off until 8 weeks. I would never trust a breeder or buy from a breeder that let Yorkie pups go any earlier than 12 weeks. Ricki |
