| Anyone know what is wrong with his coat My dog had a beautiful soft, shiny silvery/gray coat. Now his coat has a large patch of black fur (it is not shiny or soft it feels very coarse). He just turned 2 years old. Is he starting to lose his puppy coat and this is his adult coat growing in? Any answers would be appreciated. |

| I WISH I hd an answer for you but with all 3 of mine their coat lightened and did not darken. Also, at 2 years old, I have never heard of the texture changing. At 2 years ols, he seems too old to be having texture changes but I could be wrong. Good luck... I have used hot oil treatments so maybe you could give that a try. They always add that needed shine!

| It may just be an odd patch of hair that will eventually turn silver. My yorkie had a skin disorder where he lost some hair on the back. He had been silver on his back but the new hair that came in was black. Eventually it turned back to silver

| Me Too Oh my gosh, my yorkie's coat is doing the exact same thing. It started last month. On the top of his back he's getting patches of dark brown/black coarse hair. He's 2 1/2 years old and the rest of him is silver and light champagne colored. If you find anything out about why this is happening please let me know. I'm searching everywhere for the answer! |

| Not to be alarming, but how is the skin in that patch of dark hair? Just curious...maybe there is something underneath that could shead more light on this?

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I really don't think it has anything to do with shampoo. Shampoos and conditioners have some affect on the hair, but can't turn silky hair into wiry or visa versa. A low thyroid can make hair grow coarser and the dog will also have thinning hair, and even a weight problem. The problem, however, is usually genetics, and most breeders don't breed to standard, but breed whatever dogs they have. The Yorkie coat with the proper coloring and silky texture is a very difficult coat to achieve, but I always encourage people to support those breeders who believe that breeding to standard is important. This link gives information on coat types. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...rt-thread.html In your case, I would suggest a vet check, there could be an underlying skin condition that is affecting hair growth.

| The skin looks absolutely normal.....just like the skin in the surrounding silver hair. I keep trying to look closely to see if the color is going back to "normal" but it's too hard to tell right now |

| Preston's coat did the exact same thing right before he turned 2 years old. I asked the vet, he had no answer as everything was normal (skin, etc) asked his groomer, she had no answer, as everything was normal. I thought maybe his harness was breaking his hair, changed harnesses, it kept spreading down his back. The harness made no difference. Slowly it spread to about 2/3 of his back that had darker hair, and stayed that way for a long time. He is now getting these coarser hairs intermingled in his lower back also. As it has grown longer, it is silver toward the roots like the old hair, but it is coarser than the old hair, and straighter. It is still silky and nice, not really a coarse hair, but it is a thicker hair in diameter and lays better. Now that it is turning silver also, it is blending better with the other hair, and looks better than when it first started. Since the vet and groomer both feel it is "just the way his hair is changing" I am not so worried about it anymore, but do wish it would hurry up and all turn. LOL

| Maddie just turned 2 and the only change I notice in her over time is her color. She has really lightened up over the past 2 years. We come across a picture the other day of her first Halloween and I could not believe how different she looks. I agree with Nancy that it is probably not the shampoo. I would make an appointment with the vet just to make sure there is not an underlying cause. Keep us posted. |

| He went to the groomer the other day, and they didn't know why his coat was doing this. I have an appointment with the vet in a few weeks, and will ask them about it. Please let me know if any of the others with this problem find out anything. |

| Ranger has about a 3in. circle of pitch black hair on his neck. It was from his rabies shot that was given about 6 months ago. He had a reaction to the vaccine which caused hair loss in that area and now he's got a black neck! I am assuming it will turn silver like the rest of his body in time. Did your baby get any shots or have any scabs or skin irritation a few months ago?

| Amands, Bing Bing Bing, you just made a light go off. My vet, groomer and I had all talked about this hair issue, and could think of nothing, and vet checked and couldn't find anything. Your comment just made me realize. Preston is allergic to frontline and advantage. The first thing we used was late last summer, advantage, and he scratched like crazy till we washed it off. Didn't use anything again till early in the spring, vet had us try frontline. The frontline was even worse than the advantage, as it made actual blisters on his skin within 15 min. of putting it on, we hurriedly washed it off, called the vet, he had us give him benadryl and put some cream on it. Within a few days it was looking fine, but although there had been a small area where the hair was doing that previously, this spring is when it started to get to be a longer stripe down his back. Consequently about the same length of the stripe of blisters he had down his back and off from the stripe where the frontline had kind of spread. He no longer has new shorter hairs coming in, and the ones are getting longer and starting to turn silver at the base, but it does make sense that this may be what the issue was with Preston. Thanks for the insight!!! Michelle By the way, the vet thought this reaction was bad enough that he had me submit a report and complaint to Frontline and the FDA.
