| New Yorkie! 3 Month Old! Help/suggestions! hi, just yesterday i got the cutest 3 month old yorkie ever! his great, very playful took him about a day to get used to the house! i bough him plenty toy's so many he can't decide which one to play with lol. anyways, my problem is... since his new he sniffs everything in the house and anything he finds he eats... he even ate my mom plant and dirt =\. idk if its okay! i mean i dont think it can be that bad. this morning i was playing with him, until i heard this noise coming like a huffin/sneezing it was weird. as i was looking through this forum i saw that this can be reverse sneezing or something like that.. what i did to stop it was grabbed a syringe(not a needle one or anything that can hurt him or poke hiim, it was a syringe i got when i got my wisdom teeth pull out and it just squirts water) anyways i put water on that open his mouth and pour a lil bit of water in there, because i though he was choking. he was fine afterward's haven't heard anything since... (note** the breader gave me some medicine because she had another yorkie a smaller one that was sneezing and like coughin and he was sick and she said sometimes if one is sick they all catch it, so she gave me medicine for him just in case, would it be necessary to give him the medicine if this weird sneezing/huffing insist?) another thing is he keeps scratching himself a lot specially his back! and i think this is due to dry skin! i got him the oatmeal shampoo i shower him today he was fine for a couple hours but his like scratching himself again so i guess im gonna have to bathe him in a couple day's again! i been trying to potty train him as well i bought him aboserbent pads, i call them pee pee sheets.. they absorb pee and stuff like that. well at night i put it like right beside's his bed that i bought him just in case he needs to go u know? is this good to put it by his bed, where he sleeps! i did it last night and i went to go look at the sheet and found it all wet! with pee which is great i think because he went to the bathroom in the sheets and not his bed! so thats a plus! And lastly the breeder from who i got it from said to give him sugar on his water or put syrup in his gums! to help his energy and if i don't see him eating as much to give hiim sugar in his water because he might loose sugar in his body and that can lead to death! is this true? also i been giving him some rice, and lil bit of chicken! with its normal doggy food that she gave me! she also told me to get him soft food! i forgot the name! but should i give him a softer food for now? because he eats the normal doggie food but not as much! my Yorkie is a normal size one its not tea cup or anything! other than that my dog is the most playful dog ever he runs around and looks healthy! and goes nuts for his toys i love my yorkie! and i want the best for him, if you have any advice! i would love anything! thanks! |

Some plants can be poisonous to animals, it is important that nothing is left where he can get into it and harm himself. The plants need to all be out of his reach to avoid a problem. You really need to go through and puppy proof any areas that he will have free roam in to keep his environment safe, puppies will chew and eat just about anything so it is up to us to make sure they can't get anything harmful. The sound you heard very well could have been a reverse sneeze, I wouldn't suggest giving water to him to try to stop it though. I have a Boston terrier and that breed does a lot of reverse sneezing, they just need to calm down and they will get under control and be fine. If the breeder gave you meds because one of the other puppies was ill then you should probably go ahead and give them to your puppy as a precaution. It must be something contagious or she wouldn't have bothered giving you the medicine and puppies can go downhill fast when they are sick. The breeder is giving you information about putting sugar in his water to prevent hypoglycemia which is something that is not uncommon in toy bred dogs. You should really arm yourself with as much information as you can on the symptoms of it so that you are prepared is something should happen and your puppy has an episode of it. do a google search on it and you will find lots of information. I don't want to go against what your breeder told you but seems like putting sugar in his water all the time might not be necessary, unless has he had episodes of hypoglycemia previously? How much does he weigh? If he is eating well then you shouldn't have a problem, alot of people will free feed their pups when they are that young so they have access to their food all the time, I did this with mine when she was a wee little one. You should have something called nutrical on hand in case of emergencies, it is a supplement that can be giving when hypo is suspected or if there is an incident where your pup may be in danger of blood sugar dropping (like a injury). It is also used if your pup isn't eating well to get their appetite peeked. As far as giving soft foods, totally not necessary if he is eating dry food well and you don't feel he needs to supplement. A favorite treat I would give mine when they were babies was plain yogurt of cottage cheese. I'm sure others will have some advice as well

| hey i really appreciate the feedback, thanks for the support about the reverse sneezing.. yea im gonna have to read more up on it.. because this morning i woke up and saw him he was soo excited and sneezing at the same thing so im guessing he had an attack, if i hear it again through the day ill make sure to give him his med's. as far as sugar i have giving him some syrup which the breeder said was fine! so that gives him a boost of energy! i feel the need to buy him soft food! so just in case im going to the pet shop and im going to purchase a can of soft food! but just to make it clear that whole reverse sneezing... thats somewhat normal, correct? that would be like having allergy attack in humans? is that right? or can it be treated? an gone? Also one last question! my family is going on a trip to a theme park soon, im gonna purchase him his kennel or cage today! what should i put inside the cage? i know his bed is going there. should i put a spot for the pee pee sheets or should i put his food/water. were probably going to be gone for about 7hr's or so! i really hate having him caged in but i have no other option, plus i think to potty trained him i should do that Last edited by Manik; 07-05-2009 at 02:53 AM. |

| Our Ginger has done the reverse sneezing since she was a puppy. It usually seems to happen when she gets overly excited. She gets over it on her own. Our Maggie so far has not done this. Maggie is 5 months old. You want to keep a good supply of food and water available for them all the time. We free feed and use the LeBistro feeder and waterer so that they have plenty of food and water all the time. We also keep a large bowl of water outside for them. We have 5 dogs so it's more convenient for us to do it this way. They can eat and drink whenever they want. Congrats on the new puppy! |

| here's some pointers: 1. keep your puppy in a confined, safe area when he/she is not under your direct supervision. 2. for training, we've been helped a lot by Cesar Millan (Dog Whiperer on National Geographic), It's Me or the Dog (Animal Planet), and the Monks on New Skete. 3. reverse sneezing - take your puppy to the vet and have the puppy checked. also video record (w/digital camera) your puppy sneezing and show it to the vet. |

| Welcome to YT and Congrats on your new baby! You got some great advice already and I only like to add that an initial visit of the vet's is very important in case the puppy has any sicknesses, infections or genetic defects. If the breeder gave you some medicine I could imagine kennel cough, the 'common cold' of dogs. It's a viral infection so antibiotics are not going to help. The little boy just has to ride it out... but keep him warm and hydrated. A bit of warm milk with a little honey can soothe his cough but to much of that can upset his little stomach and cause diarrhea. (Maybe 1 tablespoon is enough) If you really HAVE to leave him alone so soon and for so long make sure that he has plenty water in a bowl that he can't empty in any way, food, piddle pads, his favorite toys and something that smells like you (t-shirt, pillow etc...) If you buy a cage please make sure you get a plenty big one... |

| I would suggest a trip to the vet as soon as possible. He may have two things going on at once. Reversed sneezing and whatever else his siblings had. I don't like the idea of treating an unknown illness with medicine not given to a specific pup for a specific illness. Plus, as stated above, he needs to be checked out with a total exam. If you are going to crate train for pottying buy a small crate. If you are buying a crate to leave him in for long periods, buy a large one so you can include pee pads, bed, food and water plus toys. Confining him to the kitchen or a bathroom works fine and he has a sense of freedom as well. At hiss age, he probably won't have sugar problems as long as he eats well but having NutriCal on hand is advisable. Do some research on premium dog foods and select one. There is a sticky here under the health/diet section that is excellent. Kibble is going to be the best for him and not wet food except as an occasional treat or supplement. Good luck with your new puppy and glad to have you on the board. |

| Hi there, and Welcome to YT Every new puppy that is just brought home , needs to be examined by a vet. Please take your pup to a vet. He needs to be looked at ASAp. especially now that he has a cough that you are unsure about what is causing it, + he is going to be needing vaccinations and placed on a schedule for this and deworming. The vet will do a little physical on him, and check his heart , make sure he does not have a heart murmer or anything , and they will weigh him, take his temp. Do all that medical stuff, and will want a fecal sample to test for worms. Most of the time Puppies carry worms , that need to be treated . Bring the medication with you that the breeder gave you as well . Your new puppy needs to stay indoors while he has not had all his shots yet. Keep him away from all other dogs and cats. After two weeks it is safe for him to be around other animals. About the Feeding. UNless your puppy is very small , a high quality puppy kibble is what is best to be feeding him . He needs this for his teeth. He can handle it. the teeth are coming in and he has the ability to bite and chew. He craves it. I free feed my little 9week old Shih Tzu dry kibble and she is fine , I have had her 2 weeks now, I've also brought home my Yorkie , Suzi at 9 weeks old and she ate kibble too, she did great, being free fed. The kibble cleans their teeth, and yorkies are known for dental problems , so please keep that in mind.

| thanks for the Warm Welcome! My yorkie has all its shot's the only one his missing its the rabies shot! which im going to get him at the end of this month when he turns 4 month's the breeder from which i got him! took him to the vet his perfectly healthy except for that reverse sneezing! and im pretty 100% sure its reverse sneezing because as i was reading around it said this can happen when they get excited! and other things! this morning when i woke up to see him, he was so excited to see me he started doing the reverse sneezing.. a minute later he was fine! but yea the medicine she gave me was giving by the Vet! to the breeder! thats why she gave it to me! just in case he had it because one of the other yorkie's had it! but the other didn't ! and the other yorkie was a smaller size as well! as of now! i taken him to the park twice already loves it! he love's to run around with my younger brother! its so funny seen him run! i have also bough him so many toy's the only thing im missing is the crate/cage! which i haven't yet because i hate caging him! i like set him free! run around my house, i understand i have to train him with the cage but i rather him walk around and chill! what i do at night's though is corner him behind this couch and a wall and i put his bed a pee pee sheet and his toy's and thats how he sleep's at night! he has a nice lil space at night to sleep and to go potty until the next morning when i set him free again, rather than be in a cage were he can barely move Last edited by Manik; 07-05-2009 at 01:08 PM. |

| Just so you are aware , he is way to young to have had all his vaccines , allready. His mothers maternal anti bodies have interferred with the vaccines he's had at the early age, which means that the shots have done protected him from anything> this is why it is so important to have waited until the pup is a little older , to vaccinate, or give the pup extra shots at 16weeks . He is not fully protected and is at risk of very deady illnessess such as Parvo. This is especially bad in very young puppies. PLease use caution>

YT 3000 Club Member | I get the potty pads from terget or walmart, they are cheaper there. What kind of food are you feeding him, corn, wheat and soy are the worst things for itches. Yorkies seem to be prone to the sensitive itchy skin, I wash all my linen and his stuff in all free and clear no extra allergens. I also use salmon oil in his food for the itches, it is good for the skin, chester has really sensitive skin, I have to use hypoallergenic puppy shampoo for him. I have also tried the apple cider vinegar mixed with water and pour it on them good for the itches and dandruff, unless it is really bad, I would ask the vet. I sometimes just rinse chester off with water and that can help. |
