| Canidae Vs. Merrick I've been switching their foods a lot lately. I can't decide which is better. I know it's not good to keep switching. Both of my girls are finicky eaters and both boys don't mind. I finally found a store that sells Canidae and Merricks. I switched to Canidae and recently changed to Merrick's Wilderness Blend. I saw that Merricks had a better food grade than Canidae. Both my girls will eat Canidae for a bit and all of a sudden had no interest in it anymore. Now they seem to not care for Merrick's. Both brands aren't too high in protein are they? Is there another brand that your babies swears by? I'm thinking of switching back to Canidae. What do you guys think? Canidae or Merrick? Thanks in advance .

| Merrick is a high protein food and that's a good thing. We've been led to believe that the high carb kibble is what we are supposed to feed our pets, but it is really unhealthy for them. High protein food is much more expensive to produce. Corn, rice, etc. is much cheaper than meat. Lady is a diabetic and her specialist said they are actually seeing cases of diabetes caused by diet alone, not obesity or genetics as generally thought. He said the number of cases has risen dramatically since commercial kibble has been on the market. He explained to me that dogs (and especially cats) are not equipped to convert carbs the way humans are because it is not their natural diet as they are carnivores. As a result, it is like feeding them pure sugar. Lady has been on Natures Variety Prairie for years and has bloodwork twice a year. At twelve, her kidneys are functioning perfectly which is amazing in and of itself since she has been a diabetic for going on seven years. |

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | I feed the Merricks. I like the quality of the food. I would suggest though that you don't keep switching back and forth. That will definitely make them more finicky. I had asked the vet about food variety and wanting to give Lulu a different flavor. He told me dogs are not like humans in the sense that they get tired of a flavor. All they know is they are being fed. My dad who used to breed dogs way back when has told me the same thing. Not sure what to make of it but I try to stick to the same food. I might add a drop of warm water to make some gravy in the merricks once in a while to give a bit of extra flavor or add some grilled chicken but otherwise I keep on with one food. When I got Zoey and Lulu they were eating something that the breeder sent. I knew it wasn't as high of a quality of food as I would like so I switched them over. At first they resisted becuase they liked what I consider the "Junk Food" but when they had no choice they settled in and ate the food I gave them (merricks) with no problem. Either way good luck in your decision but I do caution you to settle on one and not go back and forth.

| OOOh... I do Merrick dry and canned. Orijen is good, but I don't know if I ever saw that in the store. I'm going to stick with Merrick, unless someone has good reasons why I should switch to another brand.

The Orijen is grain free which I like, and so far has not made them get fat like the Evo did. Mine like Wingaling the best.

I feed dry merrick and nothing else added to it. Gassiness can come from them not agreeing with the food or it can be caused by a treat given. So it's just on the individual dog.

| Well, my boys don't mind what they eat, but the GIRLS... geesh. It's hard for them to stick to anything! It seems as though they won't even touch Merrick's dry, unless I put canned in it. My gosh how these furbutts spoils easily.

| It depends who you ask... Switching back and forth IS good (in my opinion). If you feed the same food for too long you are asking for acquired allergies.

| I am probably not qualified to answer this question because I have never tried the Merrick food. I have fed Canidae for over two years and love what it has done for my furbutts. All six yorkies plus our elderly Boxer eat it dry with no toppings, they are incredibly healthy, have great energy levels, their poops are nice and firm and not too stinky, and they all have beautiful coats - well exctpt for Chattie who has "dry coat syndrome" and gets Emu Oil as a supplement. |
