Luvs Lulu Donating Member | The merrick is a balanced level of protein. The food also includes fruits and veggies. Too much protein can definitely be a problematic thing.

| I've got mine on nutro natural, they all like it, and I'm sticking with it...Yorkies tend to be picky eaters, and if you keep changing their food, they're going to be pickier yet..If you get one they tend to like, stick with it.. |

| It can in humans but, because dogs are carnivores, it is debatable for them. There are no scientific studies (that I have found) that link high protein diets to kidney disease in dogs. Now I do feed low protein because just as there is no evidence of high protein causing damage, there is no study of high protein not causing damage. But really there is no proof that it will hurt them.

| The one site I found was about small dogs/too much protein and kidney failure..One lady took her yorkie in to the vet, he said it was kidney failure, and that she needed to put the dog (it was 8) on a low protein diet.. |

| Chronic indigestion, finicky eating habits, and chronic diarrhea are just three common things that will happen if you like to switch your dog's foods constantly. dogs.about.com |

| Usually after a dog is diagnosed with kidney problems it will be put on a low protein diet. There is still no scientific evidence that high protien does cause damage. I am just not comfortable feeding high protein because nobody seems to know the answer to all of this for sure. At the same time I can't say it is wrong to feed high protein either.

| Maybe it's just me, but, I would rather be on the safe side and not feed as much protein.. |

I agree hha....a lot of the good kibble out there is super high in protein like 40% or more and that's not good for our Yorkies' kidney/liver...isn't it supposed to be like between 23%-28% for Yorkies? Izzy is picky too so I got a sample from Linda (FuFuFashions) to try the Life's Abundance and Izzy loved it and it's the right balance of protein, etc. Once I transition Izzy over to LA then that's it...no more switiching for this little girl.

| I agree and go with this also. But, then we have high grain content (replacing hte protein) suspected of causing diabetes...

Chronic diarrhea could result if they aren't changed over properly or if they have a very sensitive stomach. If that is the case I would wonder why because to get anything more than a little stomach ache when switching is not normal. We eat different foods everyday (and so do wolves). These dogs now get only kibble and it is setting them up for problems. Chronic indigestion (same as above). These things don't really concern me if you have a healthy dog. I would rather switch and avoid allergies because they are miserable to deal with.
