Merrick is a high protein food and that's a good thing. We've been led to believe that the high carb kibble is what we are supposed to feed our pets, but it is really unhealthy for them. High protein food is much more expensive to produce. Corn, rice, etc. is much cheaper than meat.

Lady is a diabetic and her specialist said they are actually seeing cases of diabetes caused by diet alone, not obesity or genetics as generally thought. He said the number of cases has risen dramatically since commercial kibble has been on the market. He explained to me that dogs (and especially cats) are not equipped to convert carbs the way humans are because it is not their natural diet as they are carnivores. As a result, it is like feeding them pure sugar.

Lady has been on Natures Variety Prairie for years and has bloodwork twice a year. At twelve, her kidneys are functioning perfectly which is amazing in and of itself since she has been a diabetic for going on seven years.
