| Should I be concerned? Hey everyone! It's been a crazy couple of weeks adjusting to having a puppy for the first time. My concern is that she seems to hold her pee such a long time. (anywhere from 5-7 hrs) The past 2 days she has been playing in the little room then runs back to her Iris playpen where the pee pad is and would pee about 8 am. It is now 1:42 pm and she still has not gone again. She's been doing much better with drinking and when she finally does go it's alot but should I be concerned she doesn't go more often? She isn't crying or whining about being uncomfortable and is playing well inbetween naps. Am I just being a worried Mom? She sees the vet again on the 30th. Thanks for any ideas you can share. |

| Is she drinking enough water? Sometimes puppies can get to playing and they forget to stop to drink or eat.... If she does take regular drinks... I would ask your vet about it.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Yes twas my thought too ;-) Razzle however at 12 wks most nights held his pee in overnight. How-ever during the day I'd let him out every 2-3 hrs. Males are different to females though. Those dang boys also love to mark. And want outside to do that particularly after our female has been out. I like now to use a water bottle on Razzle's crate, that lets me know how much he is drinking. The big dog has a bucket inside his crate, it is filled in the am, and in the early evening, and if necessary after lunch hour, so his is more an approximate amount. He regularly drinks 2 liters of water a day; more if it is hot out, and or we are hiking. For example when we went to the park all day Sunday, he went through 4 liters of water, Razzle went through about 10 ounces.

| I was thinking that too but have not taken my eye off her today. We played in the family room this morning and she rain into her play pen to pee at 8am. Then we fell asleep and I put her in the crate. When she woke up I let her out of the crate and let her run around a bit never taking my eye off her. Nothing....around 11 we ran a quick errand. She snuggled with my friends hubby for about a half hour. Came home and played again then napped at noon. Got up at 1 and I've kept her in the Iris pen hoping she would pee. I put the water bottle back up hoping maybe she would drink more. I keep saying to myself...please pee, please pee so I can give you lots of love and special treats. sigh......Never realized I could fall in love so fast and I just want her to be ok. |

| You could try training her to pee on command. Put her on her peepad, and take a cotton ball dampened with warm water and gently rub across her vulva. This may stimulate her to pee. If she does, say the command as she's going and when she's done, give her a treat.

| I'll try that kjc....she FINALLY just went. Missed the pad but was close and at this point I'm just relieved she went. She held it 6 1/2 hrs. I gave her lots of kisses and a special treat. Gonna go play with my little girl and check back later. Thanks everyone! I'm going to try the warm cotton ball next time. |

| sigh....my little girl is driving me crazy!!!! I've kept her in the playpen today and have sat right next to it for hours just waiting for her to pee. She seems to be drinking well. Plays, naps, no crying but it's been hours again. I even tried holding a warm cotton ball to her vulva.....still nothing. She only pees about 4 times a day. |

| Why don't you let the vet check to see if there is something going on? She may have a tiny urethra or has spasm making it hard to go or it hurts & she holds it on purpose until she has to go. On the other hand, if she is getting enough water, maybe she is a tense dog who's not yet relaxed enough & holds herself until she has to go for that reason. I would tell the vet & let him check her for anything unusual. Usually dogs that young I've been around pee at the drop of a hat all through the day & even night.

| When she did pee, was it a really big puddle? Was it a dark color? It does seem odd for such a young puppy to hold it for so long. |

| Hope went potty at 1:45 pm. Yes it was a large puddle, no blood. Hard to tell color cause the pee pad is blue but it appeared yellow not dark. She has an appointment with the vet on Wed. Should I take her in sooner? |

| I would just in case she is starting to get an UTI infection or something. Wednesday is many days a way. It's just my experience that puppies pee a lot during the day so I personally would check out any different behavior in my pup. Some vet clinics may be closed over the weekend. Myself, I always err on the cautious side & consider the money well spent, even if it turns out to be nothing.

| Update....Hope had her vet visit today and Dr. said she is doing great and is not concerned. No UTI and just has good bladder control...which makes training a bit harder cause she can hold it hours but she is healthy and growing. Thanks so much for your encouragement and advice. |
