| Potty Training Question Ok so the trainer came yesterday and we discussed our concerns about Geno. Well the obvious came up, housebreaking. She asked us if we wanted him trained to go outside or trained to go on a potty pad. She said she would rather not teach both so we'd have to pick which one she would teach him, but dogs obviously prefer to go the bathroom outside. So my boyfriend and I talked about it. Basically, we both work mon-fri, and are out of the house from 7:30am-6pm. When it comes to Geno getting out and playing, my boyfriend's room mate is around and will take him out. Unfortunately, he just started back up with classes so my boyfriend's dad will be stopping throughout the day and staying with him. So since his day schedule is really uncertain for the most part, we thought it'd be good for him to be housebroken to go inside on a pee pad. Eventually we'll probably get one of those grass potty systems but for now, he'll use pee pads. I just am concerned that we're not doing what is best for Geno. I feel bad. Does anyone else have their dog mainly go potty on a pee pad. I really do want him to be able to go on a pee pad and go outside but that might get confusing for him. Any thoughts?

| don't worry Winston is now a little over a year and he uses potty pads in the house and also goes outside when we walk him. First he is only 5.5 pounds and when it gets cold here in Ky. or raining it is easy for all of us that he uses the pads. You will have to decide for yourself but we never worry if we are away for a few hours or bad outside. He will do both outside but sometimes he will pee outside and come in and use his pad to poo. Which ever he does is ok with us. We have him in a fenced in area in the laundry room. He has his crate with his bed, food, water, toys, and pee pads. When we come home we let him out and love on him and take him out for a walk or run the house. It has worked perfect for us. He loves being able to run to and fro in our screened in porch. If he has to potty, Winston runs to the laundry room and uses his pad and we tell him what a good boy he is. It really works for us, hope this helps and it works for you |

| My roxy uses a potto patch inside and she sometime goes potty outside when we go for walks. It gets very very cold here in Chicago and I know she will not be able to go out. I don't feel bad cause she doesn't have to hold it or go outside in bad weather. It's what works best for you. You shouldn't feel bad about going inside as long as she gets love and exercise. |

| I live in Fl. so 90 % of the time there is no reason for them not to go outside. My older dogs only go outside, unless it is storming then they used to go on a rag rug by the back porch door. They picked the place, now I put a potty pad there. I trained the puppies to use a potty pad in their exercise pen. They also use the potty pad on the back porch if it is storming. My Yorkies have a doggy door, that goes into a safe covered fenced potty area. I wish I had known about pottie pads years ago !

| My dog will not pee on grass, because he is trained to go inside on his grid. I use a grid system which you can view on my thread http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...while-ago.html It is completely fine to train inside but it does require a slightly different mindset. I recommend you select a toilet that works best for you, and put in a solid 2-3 weeks of consistent training. If you choose midway to switch to a new toilet it does take some time for them to get used to it, and you can expect some mistakes in the beginning, but don't worry its an acceptable and convenient way to train your dog. I lived on the 21st floor when we got Harley, outdoors was not an option. Now even though we live in a second floor apartment, he still uses his tray, and I love it, I never have to do bathroom breaks now.

| We got both of our pups at 9 weeks, with Kiwi he would NOT go outside but was very successfull with pee pads, so he was pee pad trained till he was about 8 months when he started to prefer going outside, so we took away the peepads and it was great! Now with Lola, she prefers going outside! she is 11 weeks and is doing very well going outside, she does have a peepad to use during the day while we are at work(she does use it when we are not there) but when we are home she either goes on the floor or outside, so we try to take her out as much as possible. So....so far in my experience, I would say see what works best for your baby and good luck! It takes a lot of patient and time, but one day your little one will get it no matter which way you go!

| I have always trained my yorkies to potty pads and love the convenience of it. I'd had great experiences and never had an issue with going elsewhere in the house. ZoE trained really easily and was fully trained by 12 weeks old. It took me another month of monitoring until I was confident enough in her, and she got the run of the house at 16 weeks old. She's never gone any where but on her pads. The key was setting her up to be successful and enthusiastically praising her when she was. She had a small playpen with only room for her bed & potty pad, so she would go on her pad and as soon as she did.....praise & treat. She quickly learned that going there got her rewarded. I then opened up side of the play pen and gave her the run of one room, she still went potty on her pad and earned her reward. Then she had the run of two rooms and finally the whole house (I do close the doors to the bathroom and guest bedroom though).
