I have always trained my yorkies to potty pads and love the convenience of it. I'd had great experiences and never had an issue with going elsewhere in the house. ZoE trained really easily and was fully trained by 12 weeks old. It took me another month of monitoring until I was confident enough in her, and she got the run of the house at 16 weeks old. She's never gone any where but on her pads.

The key was setting her up to be successful and enthusiastically praising her when she was. She had a small playpen with only room for her bed & potty pad, so she would go on her pad and as soon as she did.....praise & treat. She quickly learned that going there got her rewarded. I then opened up side of the play pen and gave her the run of one room, she still went potty on her pad and earned her reward. Then she had the run of two rooms and finally the whole house (I do close the doors to the bathroom and guest bedroom though).
