My mom is getting fed up with the dog.

Anyway, My mom is fed up with her 1 yr old male Yorkie, Luke. And I'm kind scared for him

Yesterday, Luke peed on the couch. This is maybe the second time he has done this. My mom was furious. She believes in the spanking method to train dogs (which i don't like) and let me tell you...she spanked him. Spanked him so had that he pooped himself. (She left bruises, too) I don't know why he would pee there. My mom says he had an attidue from not being able to go in the garage (he wanted to play out there, for some reason) so my mom said that's why he ran back to the livning room and peed on the couch.)

Earlier today, I think he may have peed a little in the laundry room. I just cleaned it up, and when my mom asked about I told her I didn't know which dog did it. (we have another yorkie named Lina. She might have done it, actually, but Luke was acting very scared/guilty.)

So now , my mom decided she is not gonna let him get on the couch anymore. So all day she has been keeping him off the couch, occasionaly hitting him if he jumps up there, even though he's been used to getting on the couch for one year. The thing is Lina is still allowed on the couch.

So I don't know if this was his attitude or not, but maybe 30 minutes ago he squatted (unusual for him, btw. He doesn't sqaut much anymore) and peed on the rug. My mom basically raged, and hit him. (Also, I'm not too keen about the way she hit him, either.)

So, during this whole period, I've been looking up symptoms of UTI's in dog, and I'm not sure if he has that, or if he's just needs an attitude adjusment. could it just be his attitude? Anyway, my mom wants is thinking of giving him up, or as she told me, "i might just kill him" (I don't think she'll go through with the killing thing though, my mom likes to exagerate.)

Please, help. Is our Yorkie sick, or just has a major attitude?

Your post makes me very, very sad. I'm no Pro, but from what I know a dog does have feelings, but it does not have the ability to plot & be vindictive.

I do know that an animal may use the bathroom out of fear, just as he did when she hit him. The same could go for urinating, if your mom hates him, as it seems, that poor pup knows it & probably fears the next blow.

Had he been completely potty trained prior to this? I believe a UTI can cause frequent & even uncontrolled urination.

Hopefully you can get some more answers here & help for your pup in one way or another. I'll definitely be praying for him.

Keep the Yorkie. Rehome your Mom.

Hitting a Yorkie is an antiquated, ineffective and unacceptable way to potty train.

I would suggest you do some research and find a positive training technique to housetrain your Yorkie.

Here's one behaviorist's way:

That's not the only way, so if it overwhelms you, keep searching. The keys are to limit their freedom until they earn it, make it easy for them to succeed by taking them out hourly until they succeed. When they succeed, praise, praise, praise and treat, treat, treat. When they fail, give the dog a firm NO, and calmly take them outside to where you want them to go. Then, roll up a newspaper and smack yourself in the head, because it's your fault, not the Yorkie's.

I agree with the above posters. Hitting is NEVER ok. Do some research here on YT about belly bands for your little guy so when he does have an accident, it can be contained.

I really recommend you to read the book How to House Train Your Dog in 7 Days. You can buy it on amazon.

If your dog is going on the couch or on the rug, there are 2 probable explanations. One is a medical problem like uti. The other is he's not potty trained. Dogs from what I've read are not able to be vindictive.

If your dog is not potty trained, you need to put in some time to train it. I can understand your mom being frustrated. Peeing inside is gross. But in order to not lose your temper and make things worse by making your dog afraid of you, she needs to know how to overcome the situation. This book I think has some really good teaching that can help you train your dog. It helped us potty train our dog.

You can either offer to read it with her and train him together. Which would be ideal. Or you'll need to do it on your own. It's pretty simple actually. You'll need a crate and a potty schedule.

Thanks for the help guys. I checked on Luke and he seems to be okay. My mom claims she still cares for him and stuff, but idk.

I'll try to get a hold of the book, dands, but here is the thing. My mom has had quite a few pets. And each and every time she trained them, she would use spanking. She's been doing it for years, but no matter WHAT I TELL HER, she will not change her ways. She's just too stubborn. I've even showed her a magazine with training without spanking in it, and she refused to even look at it. She claims she knows what she's doing, and she'll never lose control and kill him (i guess she just forgot about the threat she made a couple of hours back though) but like i said, she's pretty stubborn. She thinks if she tries the method you guys have suggested, the dog will not be trained and just pee all over her house.


Also, Luke was pottytrained prior to all these little accidents. I still suspect UTI, but knowing mom she won't take the dog to the vet unless he shows some major symptoms.

So, i guess I need some advice to train my mom:/ how do i get he to listen to me? I'm only 16, so she just thinks i'm just a bundle of gulliable hormones. (Also, I can't show her this post. I'll get in some maaaajor trouble.)

Also, my mom thinks everytime he pees is the result of an attitude, just because she read in this one book that Yorkies sometimes get them.

Your post makes me sad AND mad!! I feel so sorry for that yorkie!!

I will admit that I used to spank my babies (I am very embarrassed about this ). However, it's not effective at all, it only makes them scared of me! However, I stopped, every time after I hit them, I get heart broken
I learned to crate them when they do something bad. Now they are both 97-100% potty trained.

I would say to get him checked out by the vet and if your mom is going to continue to spank him, I think it's better off that he gets rehomed to a loving furever home. You really got to be patient with yorkies, but it's all worth it in the end!

Oh dear, I do have some questions for you; 1) are you using an enzymatic cleaner to clean up the pee stains? If not, then to the dog's nose the smell will still be there.

Most important question is are you willing to take over his training? HItting a dog so much that it causes "bruising" is never okay no matter what size of dog you have. This is animal cruelty.

Dogs are not peeing on furniture or rugs or floors out of some human notion of payback. I m sure you know this, as your post indicated that; just agreeing with you here.

If the dog hasn't been checked out for a UTI then he needs to be. Is this dog neutered and is the female neutered?

If you are willing and able to put in the time to train this dog, then I suggest you talk with your Mom about allowing you to do so. Show her the training manual/book, you are going to use, and ask for her support in applying these methods.

If that is not going to work out, then I highly suggest you contact a reputable rescue who will find this dog a loving home, where he can be safe from further human aggression.

I wish I had not read this thread, it is disgusting for anyone to hit and abuse a dog for any reason. If she doesn't like the dog or thinks he has an attitude she should find him a new home, before she goes through with her threat to kill him, or seriously harm him. He may be so scared of her that he doesn't know what to do. Has she tried to spend time with him and train him, is your other Yorkie trained and treated different? I feel so sorry for this poor baby, he just wanted to be loved and doesn't understand why he is being abused. There is a law against this in the state where I live. I hope you can get him some help for your mom. Is there not another adult that can prevent this, hopefully she doesn't treat you like this. You are in my prayers.

Nothing should not be beaten until bruised and until the animal/person defecates on themselves. This is abuse.

I know this sounds harsh, but if this is the environment you are "stuck in" then perhaps the dog should be turned over to a shelter. Yorkie Haven Rescue is a good rescue and some members are affiliated w it. I have a bad feeling that this is your mother's disciplinary style, and our words are really not going to be effective in bringing about any change.

This post will bother me all day, I am leaving to go to church and they will be on my prayer list. I just want to cry everytime I think about it. this poor baby could have internal injuries. I hope this isn't one of those fake threads.
