| Bite inhibition help! My 12 week old pup is biting like no other....everything! I know he's probably teething and we got him when he was 9 weeks old (I know, I know...had I known what I know now I would have asked that he stay with his mother longer) but I'm worried he hasn't learn bite inhibition? At first it was cute because it didn't hurt but now its really starting to get painful and I'm worried he'll become a biter. Has anyone else had this problem with their little ones? He loves to bite hands and feet and I've tried everything....I say "ouch!" and pretend to nurse my "wound" like one article says but he just keeps at it and pays no attention to what I said. I've tried saying "No bite!" sternly and giving him a chew toy instead but that doesn't seem to help. The only thing that sorta helps is the spray bottle I have...when he starts to bite my feet I say "No bite" and spray him with water. Haha I feel sorta bad but it works! Any suggestions on how to teach bite inhibition??? Thanks!

| This is one of the most important things puppies learn from playing with their litter mates. I would try saying ouch in a high pitched voice, kind of like a puppy yelp. Then ignore and stop playing with him for a couple minutes. You might have to do it a hundred times but he will get it! |

| Yeah that's what I've been doing and it hasn't seemed to be working but I'll keep doing it! I don't mind being patient as long as I know I'm doing the right thing Thanks!!

| THIS IS EXACTLY HOW MY YORKIE IS!! she's 3 months now.. but she's definitely a biter. she would chase after my feet and bite it. .(and yes.. it is starting to hurt). i've tried using the ouch method but it doesnt work she would just ignore it. last week i brought her to training class at petsmart, and the trainer told us when she's behaving bad (ie. biting) u can do 2 things. 1. leash her and pull her into a dark room with no windows and leave her there for 10 seconds. while pulling her into the room u must also ignore her. or 2. spray water in her ear or on her nose i've been using the spray method cause it's easier.. and it's working. and when i spray i would also add "UH UH" (supposed to mean no..) and now when i say that word she backs away. hope this helps. |

Thor's Human Donating Member | Spray bottle is fine. Keep in mind that if you yelp, you should really squeal, the same way a puppy would - it's quite loud. And then, you stop paying attention to them. It can be tough. I walk dogs on the weekends, and many times, the puppies will start chewing the leash, which is a big no no. I do the protocol, which is to stop dead and turn my back, ie, become boring. Still the puppy usually has a grand old time chewing the leash for another few minutes until they lose interest. Then you move the leash, and they pounce on it all over again. It can take a lot of patience!

| You could also put your baby back in his crate or pen for a few seconds, not so much for him but for you. What better way to become boring if you're not there?

| I saw a video on Youtube posted by a Vet who talked about this. I can't seem to find it again but basically this is what he says...and I've tried it on my 4 month old Morkie and it has worked WONDERS!!! Try it out. 1.) as soon as the puppy bites you, wrap your hand around his snout (his nose should be where the opening is and he is able to breathe) 2.) use your free hand and smack your hand that is on his snout so it makes a loud SMACK! sound This gesture gives him the "I'M THE BOSS AND I DON'T LIKE IT WHEN YOU DO THAT!" impression....(it also doesn't hurt him cus you're hitting yourself) 3.) immediate let go and ball your fist up, hold it up to his mouth and let him lick your hand immediately...this is like a peace offering gesture...saying ..."I STILL LIKE YOU. IT'S OKAY." I did this with Teddy only 3 times and he's never puppy bite me since. Too bad i can't find the video it was SOO helpful. |
