| Biting Puppy So from what I've been reading, puppies are generally better with not biting when they stay with their mothers longer. Unfortunately, that is not the case with my puppy. I have him now and he is 8 weeks. I know that he's teething but he just wants to bite on everyone and everything. It's mostly when he's playing but I just don't want it to become a problem. Any suggestions on how to get him to stop???

That IS the case, had he been left with his mother for 3 to 4 more weeks, he would have learned. You get him to stop, by doing exactly what his mother would do, she would snap at him, and his siblings would yelp nd refuse to play with him. Their mothers are much better teachers, because it is their only job and they do it 24/7 consistently. They potty train them and socialize them.

| I meant that its not the case that he stayed with his mother until he was 12 weeks.

| Puppies bite...this is what they do...just go get him some toys that he can play on and bite. If he is bitting something he shouldn't just replace with one of his toys.

| Sometimes Sandy bites when he's playing with me. I'll scream 'OUCH' loudly and walk away. I got him when he was almost 12 wk old. Make sure you have toys for him to chew. |

| Yes I have plenty of chew toys. I just don't want him to develop any bad habits. I just worry that I'm not doing things right. If he bites I usually say a loud "no" and replace my hand with one of his toys, but I just want to make sure he's being trained properly.

| Yep .... this is what puppies do They actually do a few things but biting is one that needs to be monitored As the care giver to your dog it's up to you to nip this in the bud (No pun intended) You have to let the little one know what is acceptable and what is not acceptable Like what other people have told you the way you do it is when they bite you either make a loud noise OUCH NO OW!!! and you go away You can also give them a little tug on the back of the neck but it isn't needed The loud noise is to get their attention and the lack of attention is the correction Puppies live for attention and do not make the mistake of trying to scold them because if you do all you're going to be is a noisy squeaky toy

Anyways, mine bites too. He spends 2 hours a day trying to use me as a chew. I just try to to redirect his attention to his toys until he gets the picture.

YorkieTalk Newbie! | i used to own a dachshund and it worked for him as a puppy. And i used to say to him "biting is for bad boys and kissing is for good boys" and he would actually listen and kiss lol. I tried it with the yorkie and he is starting to understand the phrase a bit. but he gets into these moods. Like for example, we went to the vet today and i was holding him and because he did not like where he was facing (me) he started to growl and nip my hands (to face the doctor). i was told by the groomer that he did this to her as well. Some people told me to give him a tap on the nose, but i can not bring myself to do that. |

| I got Pixie at 8 weeks and she was a nipper for a while. This is what I did. When she bit me I would say OUCH and stand up and walk away for a few minutes. It was always when I was on the floor playing with her. She eventually learned not to bite.

| The biting has gotten much better and yes I've been scolding for getting him so early. New mom...I've learned my lesson. I tried all types of things to get him to stop biting and then I remembered that this is something his mother should have taught him so I tried to think what she would do. So when he was biting I would pick him up by his puppy skin (broke my heart) and would look him in the eye and say "no biting" very sternly. Now if he even accidently catches a nibble during play he stops as soon as I go for the skin.
