| Crate Training Questions We are crate training Krissy so that I am able to keep from losing my mind. I had a hard time watching her very good while doing homework and cooking. The crate is great. It takes a lot of the strss out of it plus I think Krissy likes it because she gets away from my 4 yr old! We are also using the bell for going outside. I am wandering at what point do you try them out to see if they are getting it? She still hasa few accidents when my husband has her because he leaves her out of the kennel to long. She will be 4 months this weekend. I have been doing the crate for about 4 weeks now. We are not giving her treats outside but do praise her when she potties. I have just never had a small breed dog and sisnt' realize it takes so long. We have had her for 2 months. On some days when my husband is working day shift she is in the bathroom and uses the pads for about 6 hours. She will not use the pads when we are home and she sleeps in the crate at night and never wakes us up. We let her out when husband get home from night shift, leaves, or when I leave so she is in the crate from 930 to no later than 530. Shannon |

| Cooper is more likely to use the pad when we are not home. As soon as we got home he was peeing every where but the pad. So, finally we just started letting him outside every hour or so when we are home. This seems to have solved the problem. Good luck!

| My suggestion is to set aside time in the day to let the puppy run fee in a room (with blankets on the floor - completely supervised) so that you can catch him in the act and correct the behavior. That is the core to training. (Bailey is bell trained - so as we scooped her up, took her paw to a service bell and said "outside". Now she rings a bell to go outside!) I kinda disagree with taking out the dog every few hours - because in that case the dog isn't trained - you are. Now I work - so Bailey is in an expen all day with a pee pad and water and a blanket. of course, when she was young, it was a mess when I got home so I just cleaned it up. Soon - around 8 mos - she started holding her pee and quit chewing the pee pads. Housetraining for Dummies - excellent guide! Read it for suggestions and then adopt your own procedures. Good Luck!

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | Are you leaving your baby in the crate all the time. I know we have to leave them there when we work and they sleep in them as well. They definaly should not be in the crate at all times. And I am not saying that you are doing this I had to crate train and pen train my boy. I also had a pee pad in the pen but found this really didn't help with training. I kept the pen in my kitchen for over a year and the crate was attached to it. It is a large world out there and these little babies don't need roam of the whole house at this age. If they are in the crate for to long they will potty in their as well. I would put them on a potty schedule. I think when my boy was little I did take him out every hour. It did work but it was very stressful. And I also took him out once at night until he was like 2. All of this helped me to succesfully potty train my boy. Now that he is older and trained I take him out on a schedule. I take him out first thing in the morning. This is when he does his business and then when I get home from work. Then I take him out after about 30 mins after he eats dinner. Putting them on a feeding schedule will defiantly help with potty training. Oh and now that my boy is trained I dont' even use the crate anymore. Good Luck |

| Krissy is not in the kennel all the time. We take her out and let her potty and then we play and let her stay out for about 20-30 minutes (we give her more time the older she gets). We then put her in her kennel. We take her out about every 1 1/2 - 2 hours. Her time in the kennel she is usually sleeping after play time plus gives her a break from my 4 yr old. My husband works shift so she is only in the bathroom about 2 days a week for 7 hours. She has a pee pad, bed and toys. She is startign to do horrible. She has scratched sheetrock off of a corner, scratched the door frame and chewed a dresser knob. The bathroom is gated off to only half. The behavior in the bathroom is a whole different story. |
