My suggestion is to set aside time in the day to let the puppy run fee in a room (with blankets on the floor - completely supervised) so that you can catch him in the act and correct the behavior. That is the core to training. (Bailey is bell trained - so as we scooped her up, took her paw to a service bell and said "outside". Now she rings a bell to go outside!)

I kinda disagree with taking out the dog every few hours - because in that case the dog isn't trained - you are.

Now I work - so Bailey is in an expen all day with a pee pad and water and a blanket. of course, when she was young, it was a mess when I got home so I just cleaned it up. Soon - around 8 mos - she started holding her pee and quit chewing the pee pads.

Housetraining for Dummies - excellent guide! Read it for suggestions and then adopt your own procedures.
