| Dew claw removal and tail docking questions Hello everybody, As you all know by now my Sabrina had babies...they are seven days old today, I didn't know that vets won't do dew claws removals or tail docking if the babies are over 3 days old because if they are over 3 days old they have to be sedated...so my question is if I can't do it now, when would be a good time to get this done, I do not plan on keeping all of them, I have 3, if I was going to keep them I wouldn't even have the procedure done but since I am going to sell two of them I need to know an alternative time to get the dew claws removed and the tails docked...I was told if I must have it done then to wait around the time I am going to give them their first set of shots which will be in 4 more weeks, they say then it will be okay to sedate them because they will have their eye's open and by then will know how to walk and the doctors will have a better idea if they are in trouble or not from the sedation...please tell me what to do, I don't know what to do and I don't want to do the wrong thing I would hate to lose another baby. |

| If I were you I would just let them keep their dewclaws and their tails long. Sedating a puppy at such a young age and size can be hazardous and the risk of losing a puppy is really not worth it. Plus they will really feel the pain as opposed to getting it done at 3 or 4 days old. There are several people here who have yorkies with long tails and the dew claws. Alot of people don't even care about the tails or dewclaws, they just want a yorkie to love. Good luck with your decision.

| Kodak still has his tail and dewclaws, and I love his tail. The breeder didn't know if he was going to make it so opted to wait for him to get stronger. So at 3mths she called me and said the vet would dock the tail and I said no. After reading that some of them don't wake up after being sedated, I said no. You should get a lot of replies from breeders on here, or you may have to send a PM to a few breeders for suggestions, good luck.

| I love that picture of Kodak showing off his tail! Very cute! I agree with other suggestions -- if you have missed the early window of opportunity I would leave the tails in place unless a waiting buyer wants it done or these are show hopefuls.

| My Pippa had her dew claws taken off the same time she was spayed, and only because she kept catching one. Maybe the new owners can have them done at the same time as neutering if neccessary. As for the tails i personally would leave them now, there are lots of people who like yorkies with their tails!

| I don't want to sound mean, but did you not speak to people, have a mentor, do a bunch of reading before you got your dog pregnant? Anyhow, it would be very painful to have the tails docked or the dewclaws removed now.. So don't.. Anne had the best idea, if the new owners want the declaws removed they can do it during a spay. Declaws are just a nunsence, not a major problem and the tails are just for show and the look.

If you would have followed my thread before when I first posted about Sabrina being pregnant you would have known that I didn't plan on getting Sabrina pregnant because she was too small it just happened, the vet wanted me to wait until Sabrina got a little bigger and gained a little more weight to spay her...as far as doing research the only reason I didn't do any research is because I never actually saw my dogs get stuck, I only suspected a pregnancy and when I took her to the vet the first time I thought she was pregnant he told me she was empty, that he didn't feel anything or hear anything and that if she was pregnant she was to early in her pregnancy for an x-ray but he assured me it was a phantom pregnancy, which 3 weeks later turned out to be 4 really big babies. I do read as much as I can but more about life threatening problems, diets, grooming, not pregnancy or puppies because I didn't think I would be in this situation. Maybe before you start trying to insult people you do your own research...because I can get really ugly!!! I'm not a breeder and wasn't trying to become one using Sabrina, when I was ready to start a breeding program I would have gotten a mentor unfortunately this wasn't planned and after I paid almost $4000 for a C-Section you would of thought that the doctors would of told me what steps I had to take next they didn't even tell me when the babies would need their first shots, I had to call around...a little advice to other people on here that get the idea that being nasty to someone is going to get through to them, surprise it won't in fact you might just piss someone off, like me, and I can really be nasty right back so when you see someone asking for advice if you don't have anything helpful to say don't say nothing at all. FOR EVERYBODY ELSE THAT GAVE GREAT ADVICE...THANKS, I DEFINITELY DIDN'T KNOW THAT SEDATING BABIES COULD HURT THEM, MY VET MADE IT SOUND LIKE EVERYTHING WOULD BE OKAY BUT I KNEW I SHOULD ASK FIRST BEFORE EXCEPTING HIS OPINION AS FACT, THANKS FOR THE INFO AND I DEFINITELY WILL NOT BE GETTING THEIR TAILS DONE...I DO BELIEVE THEY WOULD BE EXCELLENT SHOW DOGS, I ENTERED THEIR FATHER INTO A SHOW HERE IN CT, HE DIDN'T TAKE THE PRIZE HOME BUT HE WAS ONE OF THE LAST FIVE FINALIST. I'M THINKING OF ENTERING HIM IN MORE SHOWS, HE NEEDS MORE EXPERIENCE, WE DIDN'T REALLY HAVE ALOT OF TIME TO TRAIN HIM FOR THE SHOW SO HE MADE A MISTAKE OR TWO LIKE NOT STANDING STILL FOR THE JUDGE, AND HE DID SNAP AT ONE OF THE OTHER DOGS THERE SO THAT MIGHT OF MADE HIM LOSE HIS CHANCE AT A WIN, BUT NEXT TIME HE WILL BE BETTER TRAINED. CAN'T YOU DOCK THE TAILS ALSO WHEN YOU GET THE BABIES SPAYED AND NEUTERED, JUST IN CASE A POTENTIAL BUYER ASK???

| Yes, you can have the tails docked when they get spay or neuter... BUT, it's a very bloody procedure when it's done when the pups get older/bigger...and it's healing takes longer (bc the licking on the stiches and rubbing on the floor...)... and it may cause a big scar which will not grow hair on it... Better just leave the tails as they are... |

| Yes Nydia, i too had the same problem. I went to the vet when in my heart i knew Coco was pregnant and he told me she had a tumor... A TUMOR!!!!! Well, he did a 800 dollar x-ray and didnt see squat. Well you know what? A month later i have a pup..LOL and i too did not plan anything....it was an accident as well, so no, its not your fault for not knowing, i really hate when people on here can start judging you with out knowing anything....I say, who the heck are they to judge you, me or anyone??? I just got the pups tail and claws removed today...3 days after...And if i wouldnt have called the vet yesterday to find out, i too would have be facing what you are right now....I wish you the best of luck with the pups.

Unfortunately I had to have the c-section done at the emergency animal hospital which is more expensive than having a private vet do it...if I'd known Sabrina was pregnant I would have had all the test done to see if she could pass the babies on her own and if not I could have scheduled a c-section with my vet, but since he told me she wasn't pregnant I didn't think nothing of it, I could have saved $2000 if I would of known and had a private vet on call, the emergency charges $3500, plus Sabrina had to stay over night so that was another $250. If a private vet would have done the c-section I would of paid only $1700 which isn't bad compared to $3500. Connecticut is expensive anyway everything here is expensive, there is nothing cheap about this place, I need to move to Florida or somewhere where the living cost aren't higher than what you make on your job...seriously it is that expensive up here, I read other people's thread up here where they say they pay $45-$60 dollars for a regular vet visit, I pay $75-$120 depending on who I take my babies too, and $75 dollars a regular visit is the cheapest I could find, we need more vets in CT that are in it for the love of animals then for the money, seems like all the vets over here are in it for the money...When my girlfriend found out that my vet told me Sabrina was going through a phantom pregnancy she said he probably lied to me so that I could bring her back and he could get even more money out of me, I think she was right because I almost did consider bringing her back when I didn't see her stomach getting smaller.

| Eww, anything going through the emergency cost so much more, even down here in el-chepo AL. And the first thing they want is your credit card! No credit card, no vet to see your animal. Greedy ba#%ards. I know my vet is much cheaper here than what I see in other parts of the country. I've seen more than double on here for spays than what I paid for a spay, microchip, and blood work on venus last month. Sad they get you in the pocket. And I agree vets need to be into this for the love of animals, not the cash. I think there ought to be a cap on what an emergency clinic can charge. |

| I would not worry at all about the tails and dew claws. I have decided not to do it anymore because it is just for our personal taste. In many parts of the world it is no longer done. If we have one to show our vet does it under a surgery. As for the ER clinics it is a big joke. I watched a family leave with their kid and beloved dog that probably died because they didn't have 2000 dollars to give the jerks to save it. I did pray for them that in hopes the dog would make it so they could get it to the vet the following morning. not to change the subject but seems even in the hospitals ER no money no medical...crazy world we live in if you ask me. |

| nydia, there was no need to be nasty and defensive in your response to troubletb. it's unrealistic to expect everyone to have followed your story regarding sabrina to know it was an accident. and there are plenty of new dog owners out there who may not be as careful with their female in heat and plenty of "accidents" happen due to owner neglect. imho the tone of your response was unnecessary. regarding sabrina's puppies, leaving the dewclaws and tail undocked is best. let the new owners make that decision for their new baby. there's always that option when neutering and spaying is scheduled. my vet talked me out of removing the front dewclaws because she believed it was like amputation to a 4 month old puppy. aside from that, i think it's time to find a new vet. |
