| Yorkies and Children I own a rescued Yorkie named Ollie. We got him at around 8 months and he is now 3. He is so sweet around adults and is a joy to us but the minute a child walks in or someone brings in a baby he gets very nervous and even aggressive. My children are grown but I just found out I'm going to be a grandmother for the first time. I don't want it to be Ollie or the baby. What can I do to desensitize him to children without traumatizing children in the process? Help! |

| I haven't experienced this as mine has been very fond of kids. Aja and my 2 yr old are best friends and she both are very gently and loving towards each other. It is probably because children are unpredictable, zoom by very fast etc. and your yorkies were never brought up with them from the get go. I think it would be best to start off holding your yorkie and slowly introducing them to children. Supervise well to avoid injury and upsetting your yorkie. Good luck

| My Piper is the sweetest little girl with adults but is afraid of fast moving children. I couldn't believe it when I actually heard a little growl come from her. I do have 3 very young grandsons that live far away and I only see them a few times a year. I have found that Piper is fine if they just ignore her when they first arrive. She will eventually approach them on her own terms. The boys know not to pick her up and not to chase her. By the end of their visits Piper and the boys are best friends. On the last visit my 20 month old grandson was sitting in Pipers bed with most of her toys in his lap. Piper would run up to her bed and each time my grandson would give her one of the toys. Just hearing him giggle every time she took one of the toys from his hand made me laugh.

Owned by Bella & Tibbs Donating Member | My parents had the same problem with there Jack Russel Gage when my son Adam was born. Mom actually caught him on tape snapping at the baby's feet They had to crate him for about 6 months every time Adam came to visit . He finally got use to him being there and was ok but it was a rough 6 months.

| I don't know what you tell you really. I think Yorkies either like (or are willing to tolerate) small children or they're not. Whatever their personality is. One of mine absolutely hates small children, two of them like kids, and one is very stand-offish - curious but not willing to engage with a small child right away. And that's their personalities. The 'hater' isn't that tolerant of any 'new' people coming into her 'space',(she did learn what a muzzle was and most of the time we just say: "you want the muzzle? Be nice") but we are always on guard, lest she nip a exuberant child --- the two child lovers - simply love everyone, and the stand-offish one is just one of those 'fraidy-cats' types, shy and needs to make friends on her terms (it's embarrassing at times...she acts like she's been beat or something and she's our smallest and has been pampered and packed from day one - no reason to act so skiddish). I suppose introduce them slowly, similar to bringing in a new "pet" --- make sure your dog is given lots of attention, so they don't have a reason to be jealous.
