Male Puppy Wanted in Florida Hello, I'm looking for a male puppy in Florida. He should be about seven pounds when grown and have a great coat. I'd prefer a puppy under ten weeks. I'm looking for a pet to love and spoil. Thank you all for any suggestions. NO SHIPPING! DJ

Under 10 weeks is fairly young for these pups to be released to their loving forever homes. The average age that reputable breeders let their little ones go is around 12 weeks, maybe longer depending. You may have trouble finding someone who will release one to you at such an early age and if you do, I would seriously question their integrity and ethics regarding their breeding practice. You may be more successful and happier in the long run if you opted for an older pup. Good luck in your search.

Hello Misty and Trixie, I thought that might be the first response. I've raised many happy and well loved pups over the years; my sister is a breeder. I'm aware of what most "responsible" breeders prefer to do. However, after having studied the development of dogs, I know that they form their strongest bonds between the ages of eight and twelve weeks. The "younger" pups I've adopted over the years have always bonded more quickly and become more loving than those that I adopted who were "older" pups. You can open almost any paper here in Florida and find Yorkie pups as young as eight weeks who are ready to go to their forever homes. However, I'm still careful. That's why I'm here looking. I'm a 53 year old (Yikes, it hurts to admit it!) responsible man who is college educated, professional and knows a great deal about dogs. My vet is three blocks from my home and would be happy to provide a reference. I think I could probably handle a ten week old pup. Thanks, though, I do appreciate what is very good advice. DJ

DJ~ I'm glad you were not shocked by that response. Many people are and in the majority of those situations, they were never aware that the situation may even raise a concern. Your first, brief posted request merely warranted the same advice that they often receive, so no offense meant. I certainly didn't mean to insult you as a '53 year old, college educated, responsible, professional man who knows a great deal about dogs '...shall we all check degrees, age and egos at the door? Equally I am well aware of what you are probably able to find for sale in the paper in FL. FL isn't so far from AL, you know...we have 8 week old and younger in the paper too. Alas, maybe one day our 2 states will catch up to those who have already made ILLEGAL the practice of releasing dogs at such an early age. Apparently someone, somewhere thought it wasn't such a good idea. In closing, I would never dream of asking you to prove yourself or your "knowledge" by providing a vet reference, regardless of how near or far from you they are-still trying to figure out how geographics are pertinent to the situation -however, since you offered, I'd be glad to take you up on the offer. Feel free to disclose it to me privately if you would be more comfortable. One of the pups from our previous litter was placed with a lovely couple who reside in Naples, FL... maybe they even use your vet or know your sister...is she in the Naples area? Breeder of Yorkies? I know they checked around and talked to several people there before they made their selection. In any case, I look forward to learning from you what, apparently, myself and others here have not been blessed to discover as of yet. --Misty P.S. Welcome to YT!

Dear Misty, I an in no way insulted and am sorry if my "accomplishments" annoy you. First, there is NO state that has outlawed the selling of puppies under eight weeks old, let alone ten! Secondly, any breeder I've ever known has ALWAYS checked with my vet before they permitted me to adopt one of their dogs. Thirdly, being in close proximinity to the vet sure beats being ten miles away in an emergency. Last by not least, why would I want you to speak to my vet? I am looking for a dog in FLORIDA. Maybe you should check your attitude at the door. AGAIN, I thank you for what I said was good advice!!! Spiritual health, DJ

According to Michigan State University, College of Law: Animal Legal and Historical Center. Of those states that have laws pertaining to the minimum legal selling age of dogs, thirteen require that they be at least 8 weeks, two require seven weeks, one requires six, and the remaining two require that the puppies are weaned before sale. As I said there is NO STATE that forbids the sale of a puppy at eight weeks of age. I inquired about a ten week old pup. Gee, Misty, why don't you just put me in jail and through away the key. You have a lot of posts here........maybe you should think about doing some volunteer work. Your negative energy and time could be better spent. DJ

Furthermore, if you are basing your opinion of me on my number of posts...I'd encourage you to look into some of the post counts here...mine is nowhere near the top. Furthermore, don't for one fraction of a second think that you have any idea where my time is best utilized...trust me, United Way, B'ham Boys and Girls Club and the Susan G. Komen foundation see plenty of my time, thanks. Please, put me back on ignore! | |

Missy, Let's admit, we're probably not going to be the best of friends. I'm sure you mean well and wish you and your furbabies the very best that life can bring. But I don't see that it's necessary to continue on with such nonsense, so I think it's best if we go our seperate ways. Thank you and God Bless. DJ
