| Hmm... Have you been looking in the newspaper ads? Pure Yorkies can be expensive, usually from $800 to $1500 or more even... Here's one I found: http://www.puppydogweb.com/kennels/yorkie_rice.htm This list of Yorkie breeders includes quite a few from Ohio: http://yorkshire-terrier.com/lacy/breeders.htm Good luck! |

| Lizzy, Have you considered adopting a yorkie from the rescues? I'm with Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue. We have many Yorkies available, all over the country. Go to www.ytnr.com. There are rescues listed there, and if there aren't any shown in your area, there are many more that haven't been posted as of yet. E-mail one of the state directors, whose e-mails are on the website and you can fill out a form that will let you know when there is one near you. Be very careful buying from a breeder you haven't heard of. I bought three from a seemingly knowledgable breeder, but they all have many health problems, and I paid A LOT for each of them. Yorkies can have all kinds of health problems, so watch it...there are tons of bad breeder, puppy millers and backyard breeders out there, especially in the Midwest. You can research a newspaper ad or breeder at nopuppymills.com, look at the AKC suspended breeders list. Also, AKC has some breeders listed. A show breeder is best, since they know what to look for and are held accountable by other breeders on the show circuit. Rescues have some wonderful dogs, adults and pupppies. Some are special needs and some just need a new home after a pet parent has died or become ill or moved. -Victoria Broussard |

| Hi, thanks for your replies!! I thought about getting a yorkie from a rescue, but they have these applications you have to fill out that are CRAZINESS!! Plus now that Ive seen how hard it is to find yorkies here, I would like to become a small breeder myself. And I think rescue dogs usually arent meant for breeding. Just pets. I want a pet, but to also be able to breed them Also. in our newspaper there have been ads before, but I call, and what do they say but, Im sorry we already sold all of the puppies!! |

| lizzy ==you better read up a LOT before you think about breeding yorkies.we've been breeding for 15 years and still don't know everything about them .you seem very young, so take your time.if $1000.00 or $2000.00 a pup seems crazy to you. just look all over the net, you'll see its about right. jerry===jer_lin_yorkies |

I have been reading up on yorkies for a long time, but I continue to read about them when I find articles or a book I havent read. I owned a yorkie chi, but my daughter and her even though they grew up together, werent getting along, So I found her a good home. I miss her to death. Ill have to post a picture of her. |

You're absolutely right, Jerry! I have friends who bred Yorkies for 20 years, and still happened to breed into PRA (progressive renal atrophy) although the lines were well-researched. Elizabeth, there is soo much to breeding. You will find invaluable information in a book called "The Yorkie Head to Tail." I got it a Barnes & Noble. Good breeders will always take a dog back if it develops health problems. It's a pledge you should be ready to make when you bring living creatures into the world. Learn everything you can, talk to show breeders. If you do this right, you won't make any money. That's the thing about breeding. It costs to breed to healthy, quality stock, and have important tests run. You should have you breeding stock's heart, thyroid, patellas and hips checked EVERY year. The only dog (of 8) that had all of thoses tests done on his parents is the only one who is healthy and happy. I have spent thousands of dollars on vet bills for my poorly-bred Yorkies who were bred by a backyard breeder who bred to pretty dogs without a thought to genetics. Think long and hard about bringing more dogs into the world. You seem like you love animals, and I have no personal interest in whether or not you breed--I'm not a breeder, and not competition, but I do know there is a lot to breeding healthy dogs. Good luck. Btw, a nice breeding quality dog runs from $2,000-5,000. -Victoria | |

| ohio We had been looking for a yorkie for about a year and 1/2 and was visiting our son in Illinois and I got a local newspaper and came across a couple of ads for yorkies. I called one and even tho it took us a couple of hours out of our way we stopped to look at him. The lady was going blind and couldn't take care of him any longer (so she said). He was advertised at 3 lbs. but was 4. He was dirty and badly matted .The second I looked at him I knew he was mine. I consider him to be a rescue even tho that was not the case. Buying him was the best thing I have ever done. He is my baby. Our other one we bought from a newspaper ad also in Columbus, Ohio. She was only 8 weeks when we got her. Being a puppy she has been a challenge but I also don't know what we would do with out her. We called one number in Toledo, Ohio and drove 1 1/2 hrs to see this old man who claimed to show his dogs at one time have who we guestimate to be about 25 or more yorkies in a small house trailer. I so wanted to buy them just to get them out of there. I realized if I paid for just one of those dogs it would only encourage his setup all the more. sorry this is so long . I guess what I am trying to say is check papers and check the situations out and don't be in any hurry to buy. And most of all, I beg you, don't be one of those breeders who only wants money. If we have any born to us I am not sure I can sell any of them. I get too attached. LOL and by the way...........our 2 babies are named "Buckeye" and Ahia Swate" |

| We are both originally from Ohio. We are also big time Ohio State Buckeye fans. My husband wanted the name brutus. But I would not let him name such a delicate little boy such a rough tough name. His colors remind me of a buckeye. So we agreed upon "Buckeye". He wanted to name the other one Ohio. Sooooooooooo very quickly I came up with "Ahia". and threw in the middle name Swate just to add a touch. Most people think it is indian. I just have to watch my self when anyone ask me where we are from I sometimes say Ahia. I do know what you mean about people wanting a yorkie where there are so few to come by. Seems like every time we take ours into a store someone will say, "If you are ever going to breed them I would love to have one". AND... by the way I love this forum and will add a link on my web page. So much information and such friendly people. I am addicted! |
