You're absolutely right, Jerry! I have friends who bred Yorkies for 20 years, and still happened to breed into PRA (progressive renal atrophy) although the lines were well-researched. Elizabeth, there is soo much to breeding. You will find invaluable information in a book called "The Yorkie Head to Tail." I got it a Barnes & Noble. Good breeders will always take a dog back if it develops health problems. It's a pledge you should be ready to make when you bring living creatures into the world. Learn everything you can, talk to show breeders. If you do this right, you won't make any money. That's the thing about breeding. It costs to breed to healthy, quality stock, and have important tests run. You should have you breeding stock's heart, thyroid, patellas and hips checked EVERY year. The only dog (of 8) that had all of thoses tests done on his parents is the only one who is healthy and happy. I have spent thousands of dollars on vet bills for my poorly-bred Yorkies who were bred by a backyard breeder who bred to pretty dogs without a thought to genetics. Think long and hard about bringing more dogs into the world. You seem like you love animals, and I have no personal interest in whether or not you breed--I'm not a breeder, and not competition, but I do know there is a lot to breeding healthy dogs. Good luck. Btw, a nice breeding quality dog runs from $2,000-5,000.
