In AZ it's illegal to leave a kid or pet in the car due to heat deaths. Maybe all 50 states should have that law.

That is the most horrible thing I've heard of. I feel guilty just taking my babies out to potty in the heat for a few minutes. But even then i make sure they have access to fresh water and shade. And thats for few minutes to go potty. Even if one need to go potty in the night it's hot here in Texas. MAKES ME SICK!

I did not say I was sure they had insurance on the dogs.....Actually I said, "I imagine the dogs were insured and insurance companies will probably have their own investigators too. Unfortunately, no matter what is learned, the poor dogs still died what had to be a cruel and heinous death. It breaks my heart to see how beautiful those dogs were and know they are now gone due to human neglect." I know if I had a show dog that I had invested heavily in, in terms of money, time, and dedication, I would be sure to get an insurance policy on the dog, especially when putting them on the road to attend shows without me.

You can insure just about anything. There are lots of different companies that insure dogs (pets, breeding, and show dogs, etc). "Increasing values for breeding, show dogs and greyhounds means owners cannot afford to take the risk of losing their dog and not being able to replace them with a similar dog. In addition breeding dogs generate significant income which increases their value. Dog insurance policies are designed to act as indemnity insurance. This means they attempt to put the owner in the same financial position after a loss as before within the terms and sum insured of the policy." -- taken from one of the insurance pages.

Again, I mention it not to say insurance would in any way make up for the loss of the dogs, but to say that perhaps if they are insured, the Insurance Investigators will find out more of the story behind their tragic deaths.

IF the owners of the dogs have insurance on them, the insurance company can provide investigators to find out what really happened leading to the deaths of those poor dogs. Insurance can also provide some restitution to the owners for the enormous financial investment they lost when the dogs died. What insurance can never do is really replace the years of loving, nurturing, and special breeding that went in to each of their dogs. It cannot replace the bonds they undoubtedly had with dogs just as special to them as our yorkies are to us. It can give them some financial assistance to get the dogs autopsied (which may be done at police expense), get them home, and either buried or cremated. It should provide money to help continue their breeding program so hopefully another top show dog will emerge. So, although I find nothing CUTE about insurance, it does serve a purpose and could possibly help these poor, grieving owners in some small ways.

As far as saying Sugar's Mom is being irrational, I do not agree with that at all. She is simply saying this is an example of why she would never entrust her precious dogs to a handler. Of course, she knows not every one of them will leave dogs unattended in hot vans. But she also knows none of the handlers would have quite the same bond with her dogs that she does. Only if she is providing the care, would she feel entirely confident of their safety. I think I would feel the same way. I really thought about trying to show that way since I cannot be on the road at this time of my life. But I would not want to let my dogs go away with someone else either. That does not make either of us irrational -- just protective.

We might just be misinterpreting what each other is saying. The written word is much harder to convey than with speech. Bottom line, I think we all care about our dogs and find this tragedy overwhelmingly sad.

What a horrible and sad thing to happen. Those poor dogs must have suffered terribly. I am sorry, (no I'm not) but it doesn't take someone smart to know that heat kills. Whether in a car or garage, I just don't understand. My husband was telling me tonite about a little dog he seen in a hot car today. I think everytime one is left like that the police should be called. Surely to high heavens people are not that ignorant to how what could happen. Another thing that bothers me is people letting them ride in the back of pickups. We see that all the time here in Texas. Don't they know or care that they are burning those dogs feet. Wonder how they would like to ride in heat barefooted on metal? I had a friend even burn her dogs feet on concrete taking her for a walk. I guess I think about everything or try too because mine mean to much to me. I know accidents certainly happen but this thing with heat in the hot summer, its hard to buy.

i am not being irrational. When you are standing as a spectator you "see" things that don't look right sometimes but when you are actually an exhibitor and get to know others, you "know" things. As far as trust, I have never seen the person I would trust to take care of my dogs the way I do. Sorry Yelena. What this handler did was uncalled for.

When I go to shows I see dogs left unattended on the grooming tables all the time on the noose. It scares me to death. I know of a well know handler that had a little maltese that die because it fell off the table when no one was around and it hanged itself.

I don't think it's irrational either. I won't trust my precious babies to anybody else. I have 3 dogs. 2 have never been to a "professional" groomer, the oldest I took 1 time. I've heard too many horror stories and prefer to just do it myself. (Sorry, went off topic).

How many times does this have to happen before people realize pets and children shouldn't be left alone in cars in the heat or otherwise??????????? Too late now but why didn't she just take them inside the house...they had crates???? If it was too hot in the garage and she knew it could get too hot in the van which is why she put fans...hmm, why not take them inside the house?????

that scares me to death too. Last year another exhibitor and myself were set up close to a handler. Both she and her assistant went off to show Westies and left a yorkie standing on the table in a noose. I know the dogs are well trained but anything can happen that can get them to wanting to get off that table. We sat there on pins and needles watching the dog and ready to run if anything did happen before the handler came back.
