YT 500 Club Member | Constant scratching Toby, my Sumo Yorkie, has started this constant desperate scratching just in the past month. I'd always used the same shampoo and conditioner with no problems until the scratching started. Then I switched to more expensive John Paul pet brand (the Paul Mitchell version of dog products) and the first time went well. Then ever since then he still itches. Usually starts the next day after he's been washed. I've tried rinsing so well he squeaked, still itches. I've tried not rinsing as well as to not overdry, he still itches. If I use any other type of leave in conditioner or what not he looks greasy and dirty. He hasn't been real keen on the salmon oil being added to the food, so I'm at a loss. Do I switch to coconut Oil.? Is there a shampoo conditioner that actually works on itchy skin? Cause I'm pretty sure oatmeal is a big lie. Should I use a shampoo/conditioner all in one product? And what is the difference if any between that and a conditioning shampoo? My poor Toby is miserable. I don't want to wash him too much but I find myself torturing him with water more often now trying to soothe his a skin for a few hours before it starts again, and he HATES baths. Any water near his face and he's thrashing around like he's being drowned. My entire floor of the bathroom is a pool by the time we're done and it takes four big towels to soak it up. It's pretty dramatic. Izzy sits like she's getting a massage and Toby acts like I'm trying to kill him. So the baths are not fun for him. I just want him to not itch. | I'd get him to the vet for treatment and relief. Severe itching is often just as miserable as pain. It could be he has developed food allergies or seasonal allergies and maybe a prescription shampoo, some treatment to calm his reaction to what he's allergic to can help a lot.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Yes, def do not use an oatmeal shampoo - that whole thing is a myth. I'd recommend you go on Amazon and get one from the Duoxo line; you might also want to get one of their sprays for btwn shampoos. It's a great idea to try that coconut oil, yes. If the itching is really this severe, then you do need to go to a vet to figure out whether this is allergies. If it is, he may need something like Atopica, Apoquel, or Temaril-P. Read more about how to deal w/ allergies here: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...tart-here.html

YT 500 Club Member | well, I doused him in coconut oil and left him like that for all night, and then shampood him and used a conditioning rinse, and he still itches occasionally, but not as badly as before. I've also started putting it on their dry dog food, so hopefully that helps. how long until that has an effect on their skin? I got the odorless oil that doesn't harden at all. Which seems a mistake only because I got myself some for my skin, and they lick me incessantly every time I put it on. They like the smelly kind. lol |

| I don't know if this would help your little one or not but I recently had a problem with my golden retriever. I finally discovered zymox. I love all their products! Especially if you see itchy spots from scratching. They have a protective leave in conditioner that you can water down for a rinse or you can use straight from the bottle and use as lotion on itchy spots. They also have a spray for itchy spots. Works awesome! |

| Tibbe had pink skin, foul yeasty odor, some hot spots and scratched a good deal - 10 x a day or so. The vet started him on a prescription anti-yeast shampoo but he got worse on it. Finally, an antibiotic shot stopped the awful odor for 2 weeks or so but it began to come back with occasional itching unless he was bathed in the Rx shampoo. I had to bathe him every 3 days in the Hexachor-K shampoo to keep the foul odor down. But about that time, Lisa(lisaly), a member here, very kindly sent me a jar of virgin coconut oil and Dogzymes Max Probiotics to put on his food. I began very slowly and worked up to about 1/8 teaspoon probiotics and 1/8 - 1/4 teaspoon coconut oil on 5 or 6 morning meals. Since he's been on those since and I only realized this past Tuesday, Tibbe's bad odor and itching hadn't prompted a shampoo for 2 weeks(before the bad odor started, he usually got bathed every 1-2 weeks) and I hadn't even noticed when the bad odor had totally gone away. But it is gone! He hasn't had a hot spot or occasional itching since the last of January or February. The only thing that changed after the antibiotic shot wore off was adding the coconut oil and probiotic to his food 5 or 6 days out of the week.

YT 500 Club Member | Well we just started with the coconut oil in their food about a week ago, and on top of that he licks it all off of me whenever I put any on my skin, so he's getting plenty of that for sure. He hasn't been scratching near as bad lately. I feel relieved for him. I just took him to a new groomer today that was praised online for dealing with difficult dogs, but she failed to tame the Toby cause she couldn't trim his face at all cause he turned into Cujo . and her version of a puppy cut isn't very smooth or yorkie like as I prefer... But he didn't come home all scratchy so that's a plus. Plus she only charged me for a wash and nail trim for them both since she failed to groom his face. |

| Caleb used to get really itchy after any shampooing (we've had him checked at the vets). I've started rubbing coconut oil in his skin, just melting a bit on my hands and rubbing it in and the itching stops. (He's also worse in the winter, with the central heating) He's prone to patchy dry skin, and since the coconut oil, the patchy dry skin has cleared up. Coconut oil has a lot of other benefits also.

YT 500 Club Member | I can only rub the coconut oil onto his skin at night before bed and then wash them as soon as I wake up because it leaves them looking like greasy wire haired terriers and I can't stand it. It never soaks in enough to be tolerable on my eyes...lol |

Yeah Caleb does look a bit scruffy. Here he is after just being oiled. He then rubbed himself, all over my cushions. (His ear is down, as he has a small infection, that's being treated. If he's tired or not 100%, that ear always goes down first)

I can't recall the last time I bathed him simply because it was Day 3 and he was smelling so bad or scratching too much. I can't help but think the difference-maker is one or both of those additives. He's like a different dog energy-wise and GI-wise, too, being a dog diagnosed with both MVD and IBS. I sure hope Toby feels better soon and hopefully his troubles will go away pretty quickly.

| Hello Opium88, Can you get a bottle of Colloidal Silver? Drop a few drops in Toby's infected ear. Also it's good you are giving him Coconut. Rub that on the inside of his ear too. What kind of food are you feeding him? |

| To all you who posted your results here about the skin and itching problems Thanks. We have been scratching our heads trying to figure out what was going on with our Phoebe. Our old girl Tekki is very low maintenance which we are used to. Our little girl Biewer is much more high maintenance. The Probiotics and coconut oil could be the answer we are looking for. Again thanks |

YT 500 Club Member | Marty I feed them Royal Canine Yorkshire type. Maybe I should switch to puppy for Toby. He's 10 months now though. I've been putting the coconut oil in their food, and when he's having a bad spell I rub it into him. I don't use but warmish water when I bathe, an dive taken to bathing every five days or so because Toby's little face gets crunchy and stiff if not. Should I use a rinse instead of conditioner? What's the difference? I'm gonna order some specialty shampoo after I get done writing this. Oh and his skin isn't flaky or anything either. Also even though I blow dry them on a soft warm heat at most I suppose I'll let him air dry from now on. He's gotten slightly better since the coconut but still is pretty itchy still. Poor Toberface |

YT 500 Club Member | I think I'll try the colloidal silver too. I've heard that stuff works. Someone gave me some awhile back that he says his father makes himself. It's been in my fridge for months. Do you suppose it's still good? |
