I hope you do as there are always 2 sides to the story. Having worked with the city pound I can tell you many owners cry the blues but then can't find the time, the $$$ whatever to come in and get their dog. I have had to drop everything to rush down and save a Yorkie from being put down because the shelter tried to do everything in its power to save the dog for the owner and all the owner did was give lip service and not show up. I hope there is not an owner on YT that would not have camped out at the shelter and been there the moment the shelter opened its doors..but then again most of our members would have a license or a micro-chip on their dogs. I am confused on the hours here because if they told her to come and get the dog then on the first day they knew she was coming but didn't make it, then the shelter was closed and then when she did show up the dog was adopted it almost (hey and I don't know any of the facts here) sounds like she didn't get up there until late again. I mean if they adopted the dog out on the day she was driving up why didn't they tell her or if it wasn't adopted out then, then if she had been there 1st thing in the morning of the day they were open how could the dog be adopted...I don't know, this one is bothering me but I certainly don't have any answers and maybe you can give me a better timeline on events.

| sounds to me like someone who works at the shelter decided that they wanted that Yorkie. If the woman called and told them she was coming, missed one day and then was hit with a weekend and holiday, there is no way anyone came in and adopted that dog in that short length of time. |

| http://www.animallaw.info/statutes/s...683.htm#s30503 Scroll down to § 31108 about 1/2 - 2/3 of the way down the page. Section on - Holding period for impounded dogs for California. (copied here for ease of finding) (a) The required holding period for a stray dog impounded pursuant to this division shall be six business days, not including the day of impoundment, except as follows: (1) If the public or private shelter has made the dog available for owner redemption on one weekday evening until at least 7:00 p.m. or one weekend day, the holding period shall be four business days, not including the day of impoundment. (2) If the public or private shelter has fewer than three full-time employees or is not open during all regular weekday business hours, and if it has established a procedure to enable owners to reclaim their dogs by appointment at a mutually agreeable time when the public or private shelter would otherwise be closed, the holding period shall be four business days, not including the day of impoundment. Except as provided in Section 17006, stray dogs shall be held for owner redemption during the first three days of the holding period, not including the day of impoundment, and shall be available for owner redemption or adoption for the remainder of the holding period. (b) Except as provided in Section 17006, any stray dog that is impounded pursuant to this division shall, prior to the euthanasia of that animal, be released to a nonprofit, as defined in Section 501( c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, animal rescue or adoption organization if requested by the organization prior to the scheduled euthanasia of that animal. The public or private shelter may enter into cooperative agreements with any animal rescue or adoption organization. In addition to any required spay or neuter deposit, the public or private shelter, at its discretion, may assess a fee, not to exceed the standard adoption fee, for animals adopted or released. (c) During the holding period required by this section and prior to the adoption or euthanasia of a dog impounded pursuant to this division, a public or private shelter shall scan the dog for a microchip that identifies the owner of that dog and shall make reasonable efforts to contact the owner and notify him or her that his or her dog is impounded and is available for redemption.

| It seems like it has been so long....has anyone received any information on this? I hope that if someone at the shelter decided they wanted a Yorkie....they get fired and thrown in jail for doing that.....People can be so dishonest and flat out cruel!

I Love Thor Donating Member | Wow that is really upsetting! What terrible circumstances! That dog should go with the owner!! Shouldn't the shelter be happy that they could reunite dog and owner? That article makes my stomach hurt. That Lt. is an @ss hole!! That poor poor woman and dog. |

| I would have protested, they would have had to fight me off, because I would have grabbed my dog and run... I am so thankful my dogs are taged and microchipped. If my hannah ever got away it would be like losing a child. God Bless that women! |

| Call me suspicious but... I think the adoptee of that yorkie was either someone working at the shelter or someone who knows someone working at the shelter. Who knows, they could have a side business of reselling the pure bred dogs that they get in there! The owner should keep her eyes glued to the pets for sale ads in the local newspapers. Any normal person would immediately have returned that Yorkie when they understood the situation. This is tragic. I too would have raised bloody hell and certainly would not have left without my Yorkie! How could she have walked out of there? At the very least I would have hung around to see who the adoptee was! |

YT Addict | I would have went to jail! My yorkies are like my children and i know many of you feel the same way. I wouldn't stop till i found her and would steal her back if necessary. What a shame! I would watch the shelter and see who picked up my baby and follow them home . Some people just don't understand the bond we have with our pets. |

| My local animal shelter First, has anyone heard of the outcome to this??? I visited with my local animal shelter today and they said that they have a 5 day waiting period and the "stray" dogs are kept in a seperate building (where they do their medical clinics - low cost spay, etc). They advertise on their website and in the local papers to call and check with the animal shelters for lost pets. On the 6th day, the dogs are put out with the others for adoption....and this just depends on their temperament....if they are too shy, aggrassive, etc. They stay in the clinic area until they are either claimed or become accustomed to the workers and the other dogs. Just wanted to share this...........and I hope to hear something soon about this little Yorkie!!!

| No freakin way!!! There is no way I would have let that slide! I would have had an attourney on that. She still had legal rights to that dog if she did as she was instructed within the originally stated time frame and especially if she had the dog licensed. It does not suprise me though. I used to have an 4 month old American Staffordshire Terrier. I went out of town and left my dog with a friend in the same manner she did. When I got back, they told me the dog had run away. So I freaked out and went looking for him. Then a different friend told me that the dogsitter's boyfriend took my dog to the animal shelter when they got in an arguement just to spite her. So I went to the animal shelter. They proceed to tell me that I cannot have my dog back unless I go right out and buy some $3,000 insurance bond for him because he was a "pit bull" (vicious breed) and it was required by the state of Ohio!! I explained to them that I had not had the pup for very long and knew nothing of that policy, that I had been out of town, and I would need at least a few days to get the money together for that. I explained that I WOULD get the policy, but I just got back from vacation. They told me he was scheduled to be euthanised that evening and I HAD to have it that day. I was so angry. I went out scrambling to get the bond, asking everyone I knew for help, but to no avail. I returned crying and pleading and they just got more and more rude with me. I asked to see my dog and they made me look at him through a little window in the hall door. I absolutely flipped out! I was screaming at them for being so heartless and unreasonable and that he was only FOUR months old! Just an innocent baby! Well, obviously the story did not end well. There was just nothing I could do to stop it in ONE day. So let me just say that I hate the state of Ohio for their ridiculous laws regarding "vicious breeds". I understand that they need strict policies for these dogs, but do you know that NO pit bulls/staffordshires are EVER allowed to be adopted out from a shelter or humane society here? They are always euthanized no matter if they are tiny little babies or mean fighting dogs. I saw that policy first hand when I worked for the Humane Society. That just makes me so angry!! |
