| Thanks for posting this. My dog Lola was killed on Christmas when another driver hit us head on. She was in my lap. I am so devastated and just hope that others take this message to heart. They should ALWAYS be restrained, whether you're going one mile or a hundred... It's not worth their life, your life, or someone else's. The airbag was what killed Lola, so please also remember that they belong in the BACK seat unless you can disable your passenger airbags. I don't want anyone else to ever have to face the devastation I have.

I am sorry for your loss but very pleased to see what you had to add to this thread that I just had to BOLD two very important preventative points to your post! My little addition is this...if you would not allow a small child to sit in your lap while driving then why in the world would anyone take the chance with a small dog? A pet owner should never allow even what they perceive to be the desire of their dog to sit in their lap while driving ever over rule who is in charge...it's always YOU the dog owner...not the other way around! Please keep your pets safe as well as yourselves and the other drivers on the road! Just my additional

| miabellaamoure - I couldn't agree with you more. I wish I had thought about it that way before the accident. I hope everyone will take this to heart going forward.

| True, driving with our pups in our lap is a hazard at best. Last year I recall reading about some celebs in Hollywood being fined heavily for allowing their pups ride in their laps while driving. So be it. Another one is larger dogs, unrestrained in the back of pick up trucks. Now, the reason being is for the safety of others and the dog(s). If there were a MVA, the dog gets loose and say it was a guard dog or even an aggressive type. This pose pose a serious hazard to the EMS, who are there to help out the victims. Not only that, it has been proven that wind in the dogs ears is not good practice and can lead to problems for the dog with it's ears. Well, rest assured, Roxy has a little bumper seat that is strapped onto the passenger seat of my two door sports car. There is a little snap that can be attached to er harness. This way, should we ever get into an accident, this will help stop her from flying into the windshield or toppling onto the floor of the car. I was fortunate to get mine from a friends whose dog grew out of it. Anyone can get them online at places like eBay. Best investment yet. Failing that, I have seen the harnesses with an extra loop in the back that can go through a seat belt. This is also a very good idea. The main reason that I opted for the bumber seat, otherwise known as a canine dog seat, is so that Roxy could see out the window. She is small so otherwise, she couldn't see out of any of the windows which made her car rides quickly boring. Roxy is so cute in her car seat. She jumps in it and lays down with her little arm over the edge. All ready for the next big adventure. She loves it. There are times and I admitt, that if we are driving on a country road that is more often quiet than not and we are just Sunday Driving, I do let Roxy ride on my lap. Especially if she was walking outside prior and got cold. She loves to snuggle up with her Mom. I know better than to let Roxy ride in my lap when we are in town, on a busy road or the highway. Another hazard is not only allowing the pup to ride in your lap but as a passenger, allowing the dog to ride in your lap then too because if there were an MVA, say a hit from behind, that could be an unfortunate circumstance where the dog could get hurt as well. Securing the dog while inside the vehicle is the safest option for the dog. Even if you have to use a crate. |

| I agree that driving with your pup on your lap is a big hazord!! first of all if the air bag went off it could kill your pet. I keep my dogs in car seats in the back seat. I even bought my granddog Gidget a car seat bc I saw that Gidget was riding on my daughters lap and I told her that she was crazy. I went out the next day and bought her a car seat and Gidget loves it bc she can see out the window.

| I just posted about this on my facebook after seeing yet another person almost smack into me because they were busy with their jumping dog on their lap...ironically it is my "pet peve" no pun intended...I see these weren't suggested here and I really love them... Shannon Cunningham Get off your cell phone NO YOU CANNOT TEXT & get your dog off your lap, no they shouldn't be free in the car either use one of these...now you are ready to drive...if you think a phone is dangerous, think about it your dog is just as distracting, it is dangerous for them and you if they are not BUCKLED in...so happy to see BIG dogs inside kennels strapped in the beds of trucks these days...smart move truck owners! http://external.ak.fbcdn.net/safe_im...d%3D8800005007Adjustable Car Dog Pet Seat Safety Belt Harness Lead cgi.ebay.comeBay: Find Adjustable Car Dog Pet Seat Safety Belt Harness Lead in the Pet Supplies , Dog Supplies , Harnesses category on eBay. | great post This is such a great article. Really makes you think about all the times I took my babies in the car unprotected. I never knew this could be such a problem since my doggies are very well behaved. I will never again risk anyones life and will secure my pets when driving in the car. Thanks so much for posting this.

| I just re-read this entire thread and missed this post...LittleLolaBear I'm so sorry for your loss! Thank you so much for sharing this so others can learn, I use the seat belt buckle harness attachment, but on several occasions I've had a dog in my front passenger seat, I'll be sure to always have mine in the back seat now. | This is a great topic, I think they should make it a law to have an animal restrained or in a carrier.I always have mine restrained in a car seat, all 4 of them have their own seat. I often see people with their pets in their laps and running around the car,and wonder what are people thinking. Of course people will also let their children run around the car without a seat belt. I am terrified that I would cause an accident because I was trying to get my dog out of my lap. Of course years ago I would let my Cairn terrier lay in my lap and not think anything about it, but I guess I might have got a little smarter. In Georgia we have seat belt laws and no texting or talking if you are under 18, and no texting for everyone, but people do it anyway. So sorry about the loss of your little Lola, this had to be a terrible time for you.

YT 1000 Club Member | I have a (spare) set of Leashes set up in my vehicle (one for each dog). I use Harness all the time, and when they are in the Truck, the Leash for each of them is permanently attached down through the bottom of the back and seat, and tied where they can't be thrown forward on an emergency stop. It lets them move around a little, to a window to look out, lay or sit, but not a lot more.
