| Too much water? Can anyone tell me how much water a 4-pound, full-grown Yorkie needs to drink each day? I think I may be giving Archie too much water (he also naturally just likes water), because he pees several times a day on his piddle pad (and sometimes NOT on his pad ). He's a little pee-pee machine -- but is otherwise healthy. Sometimes he just pees big puddles. He has a Yorkie-sized water bowl, but I usually fill it up and he drinks all of it, or nearly all of it, during the day. I keep it down all day long and take it up for the night between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. Should i take up the water at certain times during the day? Restrict his intake? I'm drowning in pee-pee here! Help!

| If your dog eats only dry food, there is barely any moisture in it, so they usually drink a lot more water if they don't get canned or homecooked food. They need moisture from somewhere. I wouldn't discourage drinking water at all. I never restrict water intake for my dogs. I want them to be able to drink water whenever they are thirsty regardless of what time it is. I can't imagine not being able to drink water when I get thirsty. Unless he is excessively drinking water to the point where you think he has a medical condition, I would say let him drink My furbabies pee all day long too

| I never take up or restrict water. If you are incredibly worried then take him to the vets, she may want to check for a urinary infection. However as YorkieLuv said if he eats dry food then that will be depriving him of water and would explain why he's drinking so much. |

| I leave my bowl down all day. You might want to check with your vet. I had a dog that never stopped peeing, and he was drinking so much water that he was washing all the salt out of his body. I had to keep the water bowl up for three days, putting it down three times a day for him to take a drink. The salt returned to his body, and he was fine.

| A 4 pound Yorkie NEEDS 6-8 ounces of water per day. Sammy could be around a full bowl all day long and only take a few sips. Loki drinks several entire bowls of water every day. We joke that he has a drinking problem. And yes, he pees every hour at least. We've had him tested and the vet says he just likes water. I made a deal with him a long time ago that I'd give him as much water as he likes as long as he pees outside.

| Thanks for poitning this out to me -- Yes, he does have dry food -- he also eats some fruit or a vegetable each day. I certainly don't want to dehydrate him, I just wish I could get more control over the river of puddles!

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hmmmm...has he ever been tested for diabetes? That can cause excessive thirst and urination. Maybe he's part camel...wait, then he'd store it, huh?

| I don't think he's diabetic -- from the posts here, he sounds like he's pretty normal! (Well, as normal as a Yorkie gets!). I guess I'll let him drink as he pleases and hope that one fine day he learns that the blue border on the piddle pad is NOT the place to deposit his biggest puddles!

| As long as you have him checked out it IS OK to limit water. For example, I will not refill the water bowl twice as he stands there almost sick from drinking it all at once. Plus, when he drinks that much he can't hold it very long, so he does not get water in his crate (he just drinks it all the second he gets in there) and we don't always keep a full water bowl down. Typically I fill it half way (about 8 oz) and make sure they both get a good drink. Then I wait a while before refilling it. I always fill it at meal times and I know my husband refills it many times because the 16oz bottle i leave for them every day is empty when i get home. Trust me, they will let you know when the bowl is empty. Loki even taught his sister how to flip the bowl over and kick it across the floor. She does it like she wants water, so I go fill it and she just gives me a funny look and walks away. I mean, if Loki drinks FOUR times his daily requirement rather than EIGHT times, he's still getting way more than he needs. He's 12 pounds and he can drink 8+ oz in one big gulp I swear. And I make sure Sammy always gets to drink first or separate so she gets enough.

I do know kibble fed dogs drink more water that dogs who eat real food, but not to excess unless there is an underlying problem. | |
