| Questions about poops My lil' Bella has kinda runny poops. I asked the vet about it, and he said that it is normal for them to have runny poops for a while until she gets used to the food (Natural balance). She has been eating it for about a week, and still the runny poops. How long does it take for her to get used to the food. I don't know what she was on before I got her. She is 10 weeks old. Is there something that I should give her to help. She is eating good and gaining weight. She weighs 2lb 2oz. Any suggestions??

Are you giving her any Nutra-cal or any other sugar-type supplement??? Sometimes too much sugary stuff can keep poops runny. Lil Bit's poops were runny for nearly 3 weeks...until I started backing off the Nutra-cal. BUT..... ......We also had an episode of 'tapeworms'..(YUK) After the vet gave her the med for that AND I backed off the Nutra-cal her poops were formed and PERFECT!!! I was never so happy so see a NORMAL poop on the paper.....(or under the end table....or by the door...) One week may not be too bad...(not for the pup...yes, bad for you)...but it should not be "watery"...I would worry about getting dehydrated....Maybe you could add a few tiny bits of plain white rice with the food. I know that helps 'sooth' their tummies.

Debi S...(I hope you read this) I read you response above and it really relates to Roxy and TJ. I just started giving them Nutri-Cal a few weeks ago (1 inch in the AM). Their poop has been very mushy, TJ's sometimes with mucus. I have been trying to watch them but they do eat their poop, they eat the corners of the wall/moulding, etc...TJ drank soapy water just the other day and also licked the inside of the conditioner cap. I also changed their food a few weeks ago to Innova. So I do believe that all of this combined is causing their mushy poop (the color is a medium brown, it is the color of the Innova dry food and the color of nutrical). But here is my question, for the last week I have giving them the inch of Nutrical, boiled chicken and white rice (breakfast and dinner) I leave the Innova dry out durig the day when I go to work. I have noticed that since I have given the rice, it looks like their poop is filled with small pieces of rice. Are they not able to digest is completely or is it something else? I have been trying to read all about the tapeworms. I don't know what that would exactly look like and you said you went through it. Can you please explain it to me? I do give them about 2 tsp of the white rice 2x a day. I am not an expert on rice cooking, so I know that it may not have been fulled cooked soft, so I have just been assuming it is the rice. Also, I guess it could be piece of the wall too. The poop is filled with it all mixed in all different sizes. And they are hard. They really do look like little pieces of uncooked rice. Please help??? I am going to the VET Friday 7/15 in the AM to bring Roxy for her spay. I guess I should bring in some samples. P.S. This is not the first I am seeing this in their poop. It really is there EVERYTIME I have ever given them rice! And I have also brought sample to the VET in the past when that was in the poop too and they never said anything to me. And thanks for the info on TOO MUCH NUTRICAL, I really think that is causing the really mushy poop. ANY ADVICE and THOUGHTS are great appreciated!

Usually mucus in stool is a sign of irritation. I would take a sample to the vet just to be sure what's going on.

I think it is weird you see the "little white things" in the poop everytime they eat rice. Rice is normally easily digested (animals and humans..) and should not be seen in the poop.....(unlike nuts, corn, etc...)..... Anytime a dog of mine has had tapeworms the poop was runny ....if the poop is firm and you see white things it may be pieces of "stuff" the dog has chewed..... But if the dog is having runny / or loose poops and you see white 'rice looking' things I would suspect tapeworms. Doggy poop should be formed and firm...if it is runny, has mucous, bloody or has streaks of blood.....or whatever....... I would check with the vet.....my vet always wanted a stool sample that was "fresh"...not more than 2 hours old.....or he would just use the little "butt/probe" thing and get his own sample...... Good Luck!!

DUH....I forgot to answer the part I think you really wanted an answer to.... When I noticed the tapeworms it did look like little white things...about the size of rice but not as long. That was at first glance and I didn't think too much of it....plus, I am 50 years old and really should wear my glasses when looking at such things. But, later I did notice them more and (with my glasses) they look small, a longish oval shape......not as long as rice...and they might even appear flat...(not round and fat like a live worm.) Once I noticed poop on the pee pad and went to change it...as I got closer I noticed what looked like little "trails" away from the pile of poop..... believe it or not I took a digital photo and carried it (along with the dog) to the vet....he said it was the worms....but did not specify if it was the tapeworms...after he did the stool test he treated her for tapeworms and "everything else"...I do recall she had tapeworms but don't recall any other worm he might have mentioned. Hope this helps.....P.S The medicine for tapeworms is a very dangerous medicine for really tiny dogs. My vet said it was not to be given to pups under 2 pounds....fortunately Lil Bit had just hit the 2 # 2 oz mark... Just a few months prior I had another tiny yorkie/chihuahua mix puppy who was f very sick from the first day I got her......at day 4 we found out she was INFESTED with tapeworms....she weighed only 12 ounces.....she was soo sick and dying...the vet said the medicine may kill her but without it she would surely die......he divided the dose down to her weight the best he could...but she died 12 hours later....

OMG...I am sooooooooo sorry about your loss. Thank you so much for responding. I really examined the poop last night and I do believe what I am seeing is rice. I thought I had fully cooked the rice, but I after I decided to eat a few mouth fulls of the rice, the insides were definately very 'gritty'. I do not notice any 'trails' of this 'rice thing' and nothing is on the hair and/or butt. I am going to bring fresh samples from both Roxy and TJ tomorrow AM when I bring Roxy in for her spay. (just in case) I also cut down of the nutrical this morning. I only gave them the size of a pea (instead of the inch). I do think that is contributing to the 'mushy' poop as well. Oh and I did another thorough inspection of there room and I found a spot where TJ (maybe Roxy too) has been scraping and chewing on a piece of cardboard. So that too is upsetting their tummies. Again, I am sorry about your loss and I really appreciate your response.
