| Itching?! My baby Zeta seems to have a problem with having itchy skin. We have tried to use oatmeal bath and everything. The groomers are even a little concerned lately because it looks as if she has dry skin around her little eyes. We have made her a vet appointment but they can't fit her in until after Christmas...does anyone have any suggestions on what we can do until then?? It kills me that she scratches all the time because I know she doesn't feel good.

| Yes, what food are you feeding her? Many yorkies are allergic to corn and/or wheat. Look at the ingredients in your food and if there is corn and/or wheat, that is probably what is making her itch. You will need to change foods. Any food on THIS LIST is super premium quality food with no corn, wheat, or by-products in it. You cannot go wrong with any of the foods on this list. |

| Are you giving Missing Link (or any other supplements)? I just started about 3 weeks ago, and I found it made Emma itchy. I've stopped and it's been better...I think! Just a thought! |

| Go Natural! My 2 year old was scratching from the day I brought him home. I have changed foods (all natural or organic super-premium) 7 times! I have spent hundreds of dollars on topicals, shampoos, herbals, anti-oxidants, vitamins, fatty acids, and yes, Missing Link made him more itchy. I have had complete blood work done numerous times, and have had him allergy tested just 2 weeks ago (results not in yet). Blood work cannot detect a food allergy, only intradermal testing can. Poor guy, my heart was breaking. I had always mixed fresh cooked meats and veges in his dry food, and used 95% meat (Innova Evo RM) wet food, too. At my wit's end, I bought 10 books on Amazon.com about natural food diets and holistic health. What the heck, I needed to do something else and fast. He would even stop playing to scratch, itch on walks, and shake the whole bed at night. Very long story short: I threw out all the commercial dog food, treats, etc. and started cooking for him and his brother (not for my husband of twenty years, and there is a little jealousy!). They have ORGANIC steak, chop meat, pork chops, all types of veges (well cooked or grated), DISTILLED WATER, and lots of olive oil. They drink the cooking water of all the veges. They no longer have any GRAINS, DOGS DO NOT NEED GRAINS, NOR CAN THEY EASILY DIGEST THEM. They have instead, lentils, beans, potatoes. I used to give them yogurt and cottage cheese. I stopped all dairy except for eggs. I stopped all supplements and give olive oil and human "PROBIOTICS", the REFRIGERATED kind, shelf stored ones are not active cultures. It's been 8 days, they have had a variety of foods, and guess what???? 80% OF THE ITCHING HAS STOPPED!!! It's a miracle to us! Diet does have everything to do with health. My books said to calm a nervous dog down first to let the healing begin. I have spent tons on calm down pills and bisquits and liquids, and I threw them all out after CHAMOMILE TEA worked right away! I am keeping them away from all poulty also, because when it was in a treat or their previous commercial foods, I felt it made them itch more. Homemade diets need calcium supplementation. NO BONE MEAL HERE. I can't trust the source. Making my own calcium supplement from baked organic eggshells ground in a coffee grinder. As I learn more about a balanced homemade diet, I will decide if my boys need any further supplementation, and it will be all organic. It doesn't take long to cook 2 meals a day for them. I love doing it and love the results. After all, a package can say anything it wants to, but I'm not at the factory to see what really goes in the food. This way, I am sure. We are going to Whole Foods Market tomorrow to buy organic meats, (I hope they have fresh buffalo), organ meats, beans, different oils (unrefined walnut this time) and small amounts of lots of fresh veges, especially dark leafy ones. I hope someone else will benefit from my story and a "Mommy's Efforts" for her little furangels. The internet is full of advice and recipes for a homemade diet. Just do a search. You may be inspired. We all love them soooooooo much. I could never eat the same thing day after day or out of a bag. I hope all our babies will be blessed with loving parents, fresh foods, a great vet, fun and exercise, health and longevity, and YORKIE YAKKERS LIKE US!!!

| I've just gone thru this with one of mine. I had tried different shampoos (oatmeal etc...) but no relief. Was using Nutro lamb and rice and Brandy was itchy and her coat didn't look as healthy as it should. I switched to Royal Canin which (I soon discovered) has corn in it. The itching got much worse. I wanted to try the Canidae but couldn't find it locally so I switched to Califonia Natural and the itching has completely stopped. It's only been a couple weeks so I can't report on any coat changes yet. From what I have read, they can be allergic to almost anything. Corn and wheat are biggies. Also avoid soy. If in addition to itching your dog is licking it's feet, I think diet is probably the issue.

| Dog Food I am feeding her Purina puppy chow still. My vet said she should eat this until she is atleast a year old. I don't believe it has any corn or anything else in it...but I am not sure. She also gets a serving of Little Caesar once a week for a little treat. I feel so bad for her! I hope it is not what I am feeding her. Does anyone have any other suggestions on food? Because if that is it I feel like the worst parent in the world! She was taking supplements but I noticed it did make her itch more, so we stopped that. I did not want to make it worse for her. I just feel so horrible for her. I know she doesn't feel good...I just wish I knew what to do to help. I will try anything at this point.

Purina Puppy Chow is not a good food at all and I am almost certain that it has corn AND wheat in it as well as byproducts and that is what is making her itch. Look at my previous post, post #3. You should be feeding her a super premium quality food. Look at my previous post and click on the link that says "THIS LIST." Any food on that list is an excellent food and you really should consider switching her food to something off that list. Also, consider adding Missing LInk Supplement to her food everyday. It has Omega 3 & 6 fatty acids in it that will REALLY help her skin and coat and also boost her immune system. Do an internet search for Missing Link supplement and also do a search here on YT for Missing Link. SOOOO many people here use it and everyone has gotten fantastic results. You should really check into it.

| Another thing, her food is not only making her itch, it is also probably making her not feel well. Feeding her Purina Puppy Chow everyday is like feeding a child McDonalds everyday. You definately should not feed her any dog food that comes from the grocery store. I am positive that if you change her food to something more healthy, you will start seeing results soon. If you have anymore questions, feel free to send me a Private Message! I've done a lot of research on dog foods and I will help you in anyway that I can. |

| Thank you guys for helping...I feel so bad. i did not know! Today we went to get her picture taken with Santa and while we were at the store I got her something else. The vet at the petsmart looked at her and agreed she needed new food. She suggested 3 different types...one of which I could buy there and try, the other two had to be special ordered. So, we are going to attempt the new food I bought today, if that doesn't work, we shall order! I just feel horrible because I didn't know that the food was that bad. I am a horrible mom

YOU ARE NOT A HORRIBLE MOM! You are a FANTASTIC mom!!!!!!!! When I got my yorkies, I had no idea that yorkies tended to be allergic to corn and wheat and I was feeding them a food that had corn and wheat in it and like you, I could not figure out why they were itching. Then I found YT and found out there were better foods out there so I changed and my babies stopped itching. Most vets don't even know that yorkies are allergic to corn and wheat. So don't worry......it's not your fault. It is proof that you love your yorkie because you are actually concerned about her skin. Don't worry.....her skin will be all well soon!!!! Which food did you switch to? Did you look on the ingredients list and make sure there was no corn, wheat, or byproducts?

| Watch the video "Truth About Pet Food". I recently received a reply, from Dr Jane Bicks, DVM, to a question about a Yorkie and allergies. Dr Janes Reply: 1. Most dogs with one type of allergy ( food) have the other (inhalant). 2. All dogs with suspected food allergies should be put on Skin and Coat = 1/1 ratio of fish oil and other oils + support nutrients. Decreases any inhalant allergy symptom some times 90%. It takes 2-3 weeks. That way, once you are ready to try different foods you have any inhalant allergy symptoms under control 3. Nutro is NOT an allergy food. Nor is ours. An allergy food is one protein only and is bought through the vet only; lamb and rice, etc.. Nothing else can be eaten, no treats. 4. Once she is ok, we can try our pork hide bones or porky puffs. I am sure they would be ok. Then we can try a wholesome heart, one never knows what she is allergic to. Dr Jane |
