My furkids Donating Member | anyone ever had a titer done? I was just curious.....We all have are animals vaccinated but, do you really think they need them every year? Like people, they eventually build up an immunity to these diseases and viruses. I don't like having them get all these shots if it's not necessary. I do understand rabies but, not sure on all the others every year. I had to get a titer done at one of my jobs....have you ever had one done on your furbabies? Did it show they didn't need the shots every year? Just wondering.

| I know there are rabies shots wich last two years. As for the other ones I think they have to have it every year.

I certainly don't mind having them get their shots....if they are necessary but, if they have built up an immunity to the virus/disease then why continue with the shots? It's not the money it's just that I can't see vaccinating if it's not necessary.. I do understand getting the rabies every 3 years.

| Here's my view, and this is purely from a medical standpoint. Yes, humans and dogs alike do build up an immunity to certain diseases. HOWEVER, those artificially* or passively* acquired immunities to diseases do wear off. I've never had a titer done, but I would rather be on the safe side. That's just my personal opinion, and others might feel opposite. *artificially = by immunization *passively = by exposure but not ever actually having the disease

| There are titer tests for dogs and cats! Not sure how expensive this would be though. And from what I have heard the official protocol was supposed to have changed about two years ago...all puppy boosters then again at one year and then every two years and after a certain age -I think- around six no more except for rabies. I follow this! They are over vaccinated otherwise!! I have yet to run into a vet yet though - especially old school ones - who have gone to this. I personally do ALL of shots myself and as long as you have the documentation that's all you need for boarding or whatever!! |

| Hmm this would be something interesting to try. However, here all the shots save for bordetella are required for licensing, so I will just be keeping up on the every other year schedule, but will look forward to hearing about other people's experiences with titer tests!

| The most misinformed sentence in my opinion is "I want to do what is best for my dog so I give vacs to be safe" Vacs are not safe and should only be given when needed. Performing a titer test is actually more expensive than getting the shot, but if you really care about the health of your dog you will start researching this matter. There is only one rabies shot made it is labeled three year or one year, but it is the same exact vaccine. Pfizer has done research and know that rabies vaccines last for 3 years! If you love your dog then here is a "couple" of articles to start with, but the internet is full of information. http://www.petresource.com/Articles%...ion_titers.htm http://www.petresource.com/Articles%...ts_rethink.htm http://www.petresource.com/Articles%.../texas_vet.htm http://www.petresource.com/Articles%...n_protocol.htm http://www.petresource.com/Articles%...vaccinosis.htm |
