Donating YT 11K Club Member | round belly? help I took my baby to the vet yesterday and everything was fine. The only thing that concerns me is his round belly. Teddy is now about 11 wks old. When I got him on the 8th he was about 1 lb and a half. Now he is 2lbs. He looks very healthy the only thing is that his stomach is very round, i don't know what it could be? He was dewormed...he eats about 3times a day royal canin and today i gave him some chicken and vegetables babyfood...any ideas about his tummy? |

| It sounds like he has worms to me. I know you said you dewormed him but sometimes it doesn't always do the trick especially if they have alot of worms. Take a stool sample in for your vet to check. Even though you may not see any worms in his stool their are still eggs and some worms that are very hard to see. Also, I would check to see what all the dewormer covered. I know alot of dewormers don't cover tapeworms and you have to buy that one seperately. Other than that I really don't know what to tell you. Did you ask your vet about it and did he show any concern??

Donating YT 11K Club Member | yea she said it could be worms or some pups just eat a lot and that happens but will go away as they grow. I will ask what the dewormer covers...thanks a lot. The vet was so expensive though. I paid $220 for a check-up, a shot and dewormer. Does this sound resonable to you? I am a student so for me it's a lot, plus he has several other shots he needs to take before he can go for walks. I want a vet that is not so expensive but then again I don't want to take him just anywhere and I don't know if they're good. Can anyone recommend a good vet in NYC that is not so expensive? I also read a thread about people that give their pups the shots themselves. I am thinking about this, my mom is a Nurse....any tips? Thank you so much! |

| Wow, that seems like alot of money. Here I can get mine all of their shots, a complete and very thorough checkup, a dewormer, flea and hrt medicine all for about $70. As for giving the shots yourself, it is pretty easy to do. Just have a vet show you how to do it. You can get most bottles of vaccines at a vet's office. Just make sure it has a good label on it. Of course shots don't take the place of a check up, but if you do the shots yourself and take them in for a checkup every so often then you should be alright.

| I don't know if the pet stores in your area has a vet service in them or not but in my area some do and usually it is much cheaper. That does sound like a lot to me too. How ever even here in GA there are some expensive vets. Check your yellow pages and see about alternatives. Also some pet stores sell the shots also and you might check that out too. Just make sure it is a good brand, Fort Dodge or Pfizer arei good ones, also you can get safe guard horse wormer and give 1cc.per 5 lbs of weight. It is the same thing as panicure(labled for the vets) It will get all worms if given for 3 days, you do have to come back in 10 days if the puppy has a lot of worms in order to get the eggs. Hope this has helped. I've been raiseing yorkis for about 20 years and have always come back to this wormer even when my vet said he had something new and better, I don't try the new and better anymore.

| I'm sorry, forgot to tell you sounds like worms to me too. If there are tapes you will have to get tape worm med extra. Panicure only gets 1 kind of tapes not the ones carried by fleas.

Donating YT 11K Club Member | Can I possibly speak to you in some way regarding giving and getting my puppy his shots. I need help on where to get them, I found this website where I can buy them (revivalanimal.com) but I don't know what I need to get or when to give them. My puppy is 11 weeks old and he's been dewormed and distempered. I am supposed to go back to the vet in 3 wks for his nxt shots and dewormer but I'm afraid the bill will be high again. If it's no problem can someone who knows about this help me...thank you! |

| You should consider pet insurance to cover your expenses. It's worth it especially for routine things like shots. The best way to find out if your dog has worms is to take your dog to the vet. Start using heartworm medicine if you haven't, your vet might charge you $50 but you can get a prescription from him and get it from drs foster and smith for $16 that's a six month supply.

| That vet bill was high, but we have found here on YT that geographic location plays a big part in what vets charge. Here it would have been around $70.00! A pot belly is a sign of worms. Most wormers are given at 2 week intervals, but if the fecal test was negative and you did not see any worms expelled after the meds in her poo then maybe the vet was just deworming as a preventative measure. Do you feed a lot of doggy biscuits, sometimes these swell in their tummy causing a bloated appearance. Here's a link how to give your own vaccines, but please disregard everything except the administering instructions. In my opinion, the vaccine recommendation ages are way too young, but I couldn't cut and paste just the instructions (or I would have). I give the parvo, distemper, adenovirus II combo shot (no lepto, no corona) at 8, 12 and 16 then a booster one year later. I actually prefer to do 9, 13, and 17 weeks, but I keep the pups very isolated. I never give rabies before 6 months and prefer waiting until closer to a year. I don't board my dogs so I also don't ever give bordatello (kennel cough) and don't recommend it. If you do give your own shots on a regular basis, as a safety precaution I keep the individual 1 ml dose of epinephrine for emergency aniphylactic shock reactions. Never have had to use it, but it's nice to know it's there. http://www.terrierman.com/vaccines.htm Last edited by Lacy's Mom; 09-17-2006 at 08:54 AM. |

| I live in NYC and I just went to a vet called Dr. G at Animal Health Center on the Upper East Side. I don't know if this makes a difference, because I went on a Saturday (vet visit costs more) but my bill was 145. This included his 2nd DHPP shot, medicine for ear mites, the examination, strongid, and ivermectin injectable. 220 sounds extremely expensive to me also.

| Giving shots etc Since you are a student, that bill sounds way too much. I do my own shots and even clip the newborns dewclaws, and tails... but I've had them for 33 years so I'm used to it. Study those shot instructions on the link they gave you. I just pinch up the loose skin over their shoulders and give the shot into that pulled up skin. They rarely cry. That is called a subcutaneous shot-- under the skin. You can order shots from many sources- I use Jeffers.com or Doctors Foster and Smith catalogues but you can also find them in feed stores, if not in the larger pet stores Best wishes and Good luck with your puppy! |

Donating YT 11K Club Member | ok thank you so much everyone. $145 doesn't sound bad for all that done so maybe I will check that vet out. I'm gonna give him dewormer myself since that's by the mouth, they probably charged $70 at my vet for that alone, online it's so cheap. I am a student so it is a lot for me but I do want the best for my baby. My mom is a Nurse so she can give shots w/o a problem, I guess I will just order them and she will give them to him. Thank you guys!! |
