| Ugh! Hobbs still has dandruff - HELP! Well, awhile back, Hobbs had really dry, flaky, itchy skin and a very dry coat. So, I switched his food to a food that doesn't have corn or wheat and I also started him on Missing Link. That helped dramatically! His coat is so soft and shiny and his skin on his tummy is no longer dry and cracked. However, Hobbs is STILL having dandruff. I notice this every single time I brush him... he has SOOOO many flakes. What could possibly be causing this? He is on a fantastic diet (Chicken Soup Puppy and Canidae All Life Stages, both kibble) AND taking Missing Link. Could there possibly be something serious wrong? Or do I just need to change shampoos or something? I've been bathing him with Seargent's flea & tick shampoo because the fleas have been so bad this season. But it is the Oatmeal flea and tick shampoo. Any ideas? Any help would be appreciated. |

| Flea shampoo is very drying so maybe that's the problem. A natural flea repellant can be made by combining 1 drop tea tree oil, 1 drop lemon grass oil, 1 drop citronella oil to every ounce of water and spritzing them. Also cut up a flea collar and place it in your vaccuum bag to kill the fleas and eggs in the carpet as you vacuum them up. He could also have seborrhea which looks like dandruff. It's actually an overproduction of oil from the glands and they get clogged. Virbac makes a prescription called Sebolux for this condition. K.C. had it on his back end by his tail as a puppy, but I used the shampoo and it disappeared and has never reappeared, but the vet did mention he might not outgrow it. They also make shampoos for this condition for humans so you might want to try one of these if your vet requires an appointment before he will give you the Sebolux. |

| i totally understand. i had the same problem with romeo. he had dry , itchy skin with dandruff. i switched him to nutro lamb and rice small bites with super 5 supplement sprinkled on top. we also use an organic oatmeal shampoo and conditioner. his skin cleared up and the dandruff is now gone. we tried chicken soup unsuccessfully. * in my opinion i think it's probaly the flea shampoo. we were using the same brand. now i have him on k9 advantix. |

| i think your problem is the shampoo you are using. start using a moisturizing shampoo & conditioner instead of the flea shampoo. are you using frontline plus or revolution or some kind of preventive for fleas? I bet if you switch shampoos it will help.

| Rebecca - I am not 100% sure what the deal is but I have heard as well that the flea shampoos are VERY drying. If the fleas are that bad - why don't you just buy the k-9 Advantage and use that on him once a month. That is what Murphy and Mia get and I have not seen any fleas on them and they are outside a bunch with me. Actually the K-9 advantage for the Yorkies is for 25 pounds and under so what I do is split the doses between them since it is a bit expensive. Than I would switch to a better shampoo and conditioner. I use the CC stuff and love it but I am sure there is something else out there that works just great and does not cost too much like the CC products. One other thing.....when Murphy was having tangles I bought some Huggies detangler spray for kids and sprayed it on him. It made his hair so easy to comb after that but what I also noticed is it was VERY moisturizing to his skin and hair as well. Now I use it all the time on both of them - maybe this would help as well. Good luck!

| I do use Frontline on him. It was not lasting the whole month so the vet suggested giving the Frontline every 2 weeks. Yes, that is how bad the fleas are. I don't really like to do it every 2 weeks, so I've been going 3 weeks between Frontline doses. Hopefully now that it is cooling off here, the fleas will start to die off and not be so bad. I guess I will definately change shampoos. Hopefully it is just dry skin and not something more serious. I'll keep you updated! Thanks everyone for your responses! |

Yes, it is pretty much the same thing. The only thing that sux is that I just bought a 12 month supply of the Frontline! So, I'll be using that for awhile! It works fine, it just doesn't last the whole month. AND we live by woods. I know that is what the problem is. Next summer, when the fleas get bad again and I've used up all my Frontline, it will probably be a good idea for me to try K-9 Advantix. It certainly would not hurt to try it, right?! | |
