I need help!!!! My Yorkie Toby is 11 weeks old. Last saturday his blood sugar dropped. We took him to the emergency vet and he got better. They told us to make sure he is eating at least 4 times a day and to give him nutrical in between meals to keep his blood sugar level up. For the past couple of days he has been doing really good. He has been hyper and we have been doing what the vet told us. We gave him nutrical at 7:00 last night and by 7:00 this morning his blood sugar level had dropped again. We rushed him to the vet (not even sure if he was going to make it to the vet). Well he did make it to the vet and they tested his blood sugar level and it was 18. Its supposed to be over 100. I dont know exactly what they gave him but he started to come around. They told me he is Dehydrated and asked me if he had been having Diareah. Well he has. So they pumped him full of fluids and took a stool sample. They checked for Parvos and that came back negative. but they think he might have a parasite. Called Coxica or something similar to that. Has anyones dog ever had that and if so would that make his blood sugar drop that bad. I am really scared that we are going to have to keep rushing him to the vet because he gets hypoglycemic. It scares me to see him like that. He is also a very small dog. He weighed 1 lb today. If any of you guys know what i am talking about please just help me. I want my baby to be safe.

| - I sure hope Toby feels better real soon. Last weekend a similiar thing happened to Bella and they had to do the Fluid Therapy on her too and gave her antibotics, along with a shot and drawing blood. The blood tests came back and she had an infection so she has to stay on the antibiotic for 14 days. I know it's very scarey, we will keep Toby in our thoughts - Kisses from Bella

My understanding is coccidia is an intestinal parasite and can be very tought of tiny puppies. Did the vet give him some med to take?? Lil Bit did have the same thing...I had frequent episodes of the hypoglycemia also with her.... She did tend to have 'runny poops' (from the coccidia) and I think that is where the problem with dehydration came from. After a few days on the med and being attentive to giving Nutracal and making her eat things got alot better. You may want to put some gatorade mixed with water in the bowl and maybe even a spoon of clear Karo syrup....that should help with both the dehydration and sugar issues. Once the coccidia clears up you should see him get much better.....try to keep him a warm place to cuddle and relax.....he doesn't need any additional stress.

Thank you all very much for your replies. Debi_S Thank you for every you said. I was already thinking about putting a little sugar or something in his water. i hadnt thought of using gatoraid. But i will try that. Yes they gave me some meds for his coccidia so hopefully that will help him. We have been making sure to give him the nutrical but after this morning i want to give him more. Is there a certain amount that is too much? He is so little i dont want to give him too much. Did you take Little Bit to the vet every time they went hypoglycemic? The vet told me to keep him really calm and i plan on doing that.

oh my goodness, this sounds oh to familar! My Christy is 6 months now and weighs 3.5 pds. But when I got her she was 8 weeks and 1.3 pounds and from what I've read since then to young for me to be taking her. We spent Dec and Jan at the vet and back to the breeder. I could not keep her blood sugar under control. It was such an upseting time. We did not want another puppy, we only wanted her. We spent about $800.00 on blood work, emergency vet, x-rays. And after all that the vet said it could be a thousand things. We gave her water gatorade, pedilite, honey, karo syrup (by drop[per) Force fed her baby food, canned milk, puppy food, prescribtion food and of cource nutrical. Still could not get it together. In mid Jan the breeder took her for a 2 weeks (we were so sad). The breeder kept her under a heat lamp and did nutrical and force feed her chic mixed with broth. Well it did the trick! We got her back and fed her boiled chic mixed with liver sausage and pedialite for the first week and she was realy coming around, and by the second week we started her on hard food and reg water and she did great! And still doing great! I hope something in here helps. I did not know about this web site while I was going through this and thought I was the only one going through this. But with the small ones comes this problem a lot of the time from what I have read. Good luck, and if you have any questions let me know. Jeanne Also the vet kept her on an antibotic for Dec and Jan.

Yes BossJeanne@aol any little bit helps. I feel like you. I only want him. I have become so attached to him hes like my kid. I couldnt send my kid back. I would be willing to give him back to the breeder to take care of him but she lives in Mississippi and i live in California so its not like driving across town to give him back. My mom is the one that is with him all day and she said he has been eating more today. She said she gave him some chicken and he ate it and he has been drinking water. After work i am stopping by the store and get some gatoraid hopefully that will help. I know his blood sugar is going to go up and down but Its so scary when it drops. Its like hes not even there. But when he snaps out of it hes right back to his normal self again. I am really glad your dog is doing good now. I hate to think that some of you guys have gone through what i am going through now.

Glad he is doing better. I did not go to the vet with the hypoglycemia episodes....but I am a peds nurse and have a high level of tolerance for stress (ha ha ha)...I really felt comfortable dealing with Lil Bit at home....I also lost a yorkie mix puppy 6 months earlier fighting hypoglycemia but later found her to be infested with tapeworms which actually killed her because she was only 9 oz and the med was too strong for her size.....(did not mean to add all the nasty details!!) Toby will do fine...just be really careful with him. I did have a few worrysome moments getting Lil Bit to EAT ANYTHING.....thank goodness I was a new member here at YT and got tons of great advice.....My best recipe was grinding her puppy food very fine...(almost like a powder) and adding baby food chicken warmed a little....(the tiny 1st stage foods)...and she ate that the best. Well, until she finally got a bit picky, but that is another thread/subject. I continued giving her the Nutrical for weeks and weeks.....Lil Bit was 3 months old and 1 pound when I got her....she was sick for almost 2 weeks and gained only a few ounces....the vet had me giving her 1 cc of Nutrical 3 x's a day. I also kept her water 1/2 and 1/2 with gatorade and a small spoon of Karo. If he does get to eating a bit better and you notice his poops staying a bit runny or loose try backing off the sugar or Nutrical a bit because they can tend to make their poops looser. When I finally quit giving the Nutrical (except watching for symptoms) my happiest moment was the day I found a Lil Bit poop that was normal, dry, formed poop!!!!! I knew then she was going to do well. The "warm place" idea came from my chihuahua, Apple.....she is nearly naked with no hair on her belly and She always seemed cold...I placed a heating pad inside a large fleece dog bed cover and zipped it in.....(I kept the cord hidden under the couch cushions).....turned it on low and Apple STAYED under that thing.......when I got Lil Bit she seemed to like getting under it with Apple......and still loves it! Be sure to get a really cheap heating pad that does not have an "automatic 2 hour off" safety feature...Apple hated that!!!!! Good luck......and glad you have someone who can be with him during the day...I am fortunate to have a nursing job where I can come and go at home if needed.....and wild puppy kisses from Apple and Lil Bit to Toby!!!!!(XXXX)

Symptoms can be very mild...sleepy....missing a feed...(like totally uninterested in you even fixing something)....a bit wobbly (which can be mistaken for clumsy walking on slick floors)...just not as energetic or active. Or the symptoms can be sudden and quite severe...non-responsive......shaking.....pale gums......even to seizures! I just watch and watch...if in doubt I just give a dose of nutrical or sugar-water or try to push something like baby apple juice with a pinch of sugar added. Getting and keeping them warm helps, too. Cold is certainly a stress on little ones.

I agree with what Debbi_S has said. My puppies drop in blood sugar have come on pretty fast. When i have gotten to him its like his muscles dont work, His eyes are rolling back into his head, he isnt responsive at all. Its like he is in a coma. The Vet told me if he starts getting hypoglycemic to rub the nutrical on his gums because it will absorb faster that way. It is very scary when it happens. (well at least to me because this is my first small puppy). And i dont mind at all you asking a question. The more people that can be helped with this topic the better. I didnt know anything until the first episode and i didnt know what to do. I have gotten some advice from the two vets i have talked to and so much help for the great people that are willing to tell their stories on this board.
