How much water is too much water for a 5mo old?? I've read in a couple of places that say if a puppy drinks excessive amounts of water per day that it's usually a sign of a problem ? Such as kidneys etc... Then I read somewhere where it said that your puppy should drink 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight. My dog weighs 2 lbs at 5 months old. He drinks more than 2 oz of water a day! The 2 oz seems to be too little water in my mind. My Yorkie drinks about 3/4 cup for the whole day. That's just a guess. He has small 4 oz bowls that he drinks out of. I fill it to 4 oz then I might add about another 1-2 oz of water later in the day.I leave the water out for him the whole day while he's with me at work and when he gets home. I do remove the water around 9:30 PM and this has stopped most of the late night accidents in his crate. What do you guys do for water. And about how much do they drink? Genie

I would say it depends on how active they are. When Yoda had a playmate a few nights ago, they easily drank 3-4 ounces each. Yoda actually had to pee like 3 times within 2-3 hours because they ran around so hard and was so excited! Plus, the weather has been hot too around here, and they need more water during that time period... We refill Yoda's water twice a day, I'm really not sure how much he drinks though.

| I have always read and been told that they should have fresh water available at tll times. Since we put down a clean bowl with fresh water for Toto several times a day, it's hard to judge just how much she actually drinks but I would estimate maybe 1 cup or more depending on the weather and her activity. Also, we never give her anything but one particular kind of bottled water. Water in some areas make our stomach upset so we always "play it safe" and drink bottled water and just simply got Toto used to it too!

water That does not sound like too much at all. You will notice when it is too much..they bowl will be empty several times per day. My daughter had a very old one with Cushings and she drank an 8 oz bowl 3 times per day. When she was younger and healthy, she drank only one bowl full..8oz.

I thought it was too little bit of water also. I have water available for him at all times except sleep time at night when he goes to his crate uintil 4:30 am. Wow if he drank 2 or 3 of 8 oz bowls of water then I would deffinately be worried since he is so small. I want to stop by soon at the vet's office just to weigh him. Last visit there was no weight gain. He's gained a total of about 6-8 oz in 5 weeks. My husband asked me since I spoil him so much if I planned to do a birthday party for his first birthday! I said of course I'm making him one of those tiny mini cupcakes and putting one candle on it and also will make him a small birthday hat that says Birthday Boy! Well no one will be invited unless they are yorkie lovers! Genie

YAY! Birthday parties are great! Take a lotta pictures! Though I think Yorkies are so spoiled that you can't possibly spoil them even more on their birthday!

water Cookie..if the book said 1oz of water to 1 pound of dog, then he is getting about 6oz..it is 3 times what he needs to stay health, but not too much to be unhealthy. Some dogs get water in other places, like canned food, cottage cheese etc. Then you can get one who is healthy, but likes water..perhaps it plays more, weather is hotter outside etc. He is too young for most health problems with the symtom of excess drinking..it would be unsually for him to have Cushings or diabetes.

Our little Roxee drinks more than that in a day, she always has. She loves water and like someone said we keep it down for her at all times. She's 4 months old and especially when she's been playing alot she really drinks alot of water but that's very normal. Sounds like your dog is fine i'd keep the water down for her like your doing and she will do just fine.

I think the amount of water a puppy drinks depends on the weather and how active they are. I know when Lucky my 15 year old chow-mix gets a steroid shot she will drink alot more water. Rudy my little toot will drink water everytime one of the other dogs drinks. It is so funny he will get between Lucky's legs and drink. I don't think he is thirsty, I think he does it to aggravate them. Everyday is something new with Rudy ..............Cindy
