| Tips for Cutting Toe Nails Hi, since I can't take Bella to the groomer now, her toe nails are long and I noticed that a couple of nails are starting to curl in. Bella won't let me cut her black nails. I keep touching her feet as much as possible and also show her and let her smell the nail clippers, but she pulls away from me. I've been watching the Yutube videos but it's not as easy to do. Those dogs in the videos are so calm.I accidentally cut a blood vessel a couple of weeks ago. Bella pulled her foot from me so I cut more than the trim I wanted to do. It really frightened me to see her blood. Lucky I purchased the nail stop styptic powder at the same time. I understand from the groomer she said that her toe nails are long so the blood vessels are close to the nail and that I shouldn't cut her nails since I'm not experienced. Well now I have to learn on my own. Can anybody please share any tips or suggestions on how they manage to cut their dog's toenails? Also yes I will treat her with treats as much as she wants if she lets me cut her nails. Even if it's just one toenail a week, lol. Thank you. |

| If they are starting to curl then your vet probably needs to trim them. You also might want to look at the nail grinders instead of cutting them you file them.

| I'm a cuticle-cutting chick-chick-chicken so I'll do anything to avoid clipping toy dogs' toenails. Every since they were available, I've used a dognail grinder, the $19.95 one at Walmart was not too loud or too powerful for Tibbe and bought 2 or 3 over time. Change batteries as they run down.

| Unless you can easily see her cuticle through her nail and bit by bit clip up near it until she begins to draw back paw or tremble, yawn, lick lips, etc., I would avoid trying to clip them as likely the cuticle in each nail has grown out to fairly near the tip so easily cut if you can't see it through a dark nail and it's full of nerve-endings so it's pretty painful & always bloody and very shocking to the dog. Marks many dogs for a lifetime to have a painful nail clip session.

| Hi, Mike's nails also have a very long quick and no matter how many tutorials I watched when he was a puppy i couldn't do it right. Then his vet quicked his nails several times and there was so much blood and it was so traumatic for Mike that for a while he wouldn't let us touch his paws at all... What worked for us - I make a nail file with sandpaper and file his nails. Took me a while to desensitise him but now it takes 10 minutes and it's stress free for both of us. Also his nails are not sharp like after clipping. I made a video on youtube, maybe it will be helpful for you <3 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXVD0XgMOAc |

| I enjoyed reading everyones' suggestions, ideas, pictures of the paws and nails, and videos. It made me feel good that I'm not the only one with dog nail issues. I was struggling with this. It will take time and patience for Bella to allow me to touch her toe nails after the trauma of making her bleed when I clipped her blood vessel. I'm so afraid to clip her nails again. Especially not at this time, she's not calm. I'm going to try both the nail filing and grinder suggestions you mention here. Hopefully with a lot of patience, treats and over a period of time she will let me. I ordered the nail grinder yesterday from Amazon and hope it will be as quiet as advertised, but it won't arrive til some time in June to July unfortunately. In the meantime, I'm going to try out the nail block and filing with sandpaper that Mike and Me's video showed. It is a great video, loved it! Mike is such a cutie and adorable. Thank you everyone! | Hi I'm just sharing this. I was so lucky that Bella's groomer had a cancellation and accommodated her for a full grooming appointment this week otherwise we'd have to wait til early July. She got her nails trimmed and grinded nicely. I was using sandpaper trying to file her nails down, which was a slow process but I really needed the groomer's expertise. She did a wonderful job. In the meantime I had ordered a nail grinder but it hasn't arrived yet. I hope I will be successful in using it to help to keep nails trimmed. Now we can't hear her nails walking on the hardfloor anymore, hahaha! I felt so relieved that our government allowed for the groomer's to open up. They are so very essential workers. Thumbs Up! |
