| Strongyloides- Threadworms Hey guys! I am here with another problem😩!!! I asked about feeding schedule and food recommendations several months ago and received great advice! My Maggie (11 months) has on and off had issues with her stool since we got her at 15 weeks...she has had blood, constipation, and most recently a month ago a bout of diarrhea. About a month ago she had several rounds of diarrhea and even passed out on me! We rushed her to the emergency vet and they diagnosed her with gastroenteritis. They gave her multiple meds and I thought she recovered. Well...fast forward a few weeks and she had a little bit of blood ( like she has had in and off since we got her when I wiped her after pooping). I did not think much of it because we have been to the vet multiple times and they have found no reason for the small amount of blood, other than possibly full anal glands or contipation causing a small tear and thus the small amount of blood. The vet has done multiple fecal tests since we have had her she has never tested positive for any worms. Well...yesterday she peed on me three times, which never happens! I knew something was wrong! I called the vet and had to make an appointment with another vet than our regular, she diagnosed her with a uti and strongyloides ( threadworms)! Said she might have had them all along...she was just given a week of Panacur when she was treated for gastroenteritis just as a precaution, but apparently you have to re-retreat again in 3-4 weeks to get them all. I have no idea where she could have gotten this at!!! I watch her like a hawk when we go outside! We have no other animals, we have been to no parks, or in public at all! I am wondering if she did not come from the breeder with them...we have almost always had issues with tinges of blood in stools on and off since the day we brought her home! Anyway...I have read horror stories on these worms!!!! Please reassure me that we can get rid of them! I need some positive stories! Any advice? I have been washing all bedding daily, I have always picked up her poop in the yard...I am a clean freak so I always wipe her when she potties...please help me! We love our girl and we are just sick about all of this! Thanks in advance! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | So sorry you're having to deal with this...ugh, worms are yucky, I know. But you will get her better! Honestly, she could've picked them up just by sniffing the poo on the ground from some other infected dog. But, with you saying she's *always* had issues - I then think she got them from her mother, since birth. Poor baby. If that's the case, she has had them a long time now - and they've likely really done a number on her small intestine. And if she's auto-infected herself during this whole time (not unlikely) -- that infection tends to be worse and the worms may burrow into the colon. SO, be sure to treat her aggressively with your vet. And, I'd get her on a good probiotic ASAP to repopulate her intestinal flora - there are many probiotics out there - I like Natures Farmacy Dogzymes - here. Keep us posted and just know she'll be okay. That said, if she's had these since birth - it could take a good while (months) for her poo to normalize to due the damage done in the small intestine. If you keep having trouble w/ poo, be sure to post here for help! Many of us have been thru that.

| Thank you so much for your response!!! I have her on Vetriscience probiotics...have noticed a huge difference in her regularity since starting a couple of weeks ago. When she was seen by the emergency vet, the first week of June, they gave her Proviable probiotics and I noticed such a huge difference in constipation so when she was done with her prescription probiotics I ordered the Vetriscience. I think that all the wormings that she has had plus the combo of being on probiotics for a month now has maybe helped her to not be so infected with the worms or at least kept them under control(if that is possible?). She has had three fecal tests in the last 6 months and none of them diagnosed these worms except the last test? ...the new vet said what she saw was not a horrible infestation and that sometimes threadworms are very hard to diagnose if there is not a huge population in the feces. I know that I probably will never know how she got them, but I am determined to get them gone with no re-infection. The vet also said that they were not contagious to humans, but good for says otherwise...does anyone know for sure that humans cannot contract these worms? I have a 10 year old who I know does not have the same standard of hygiene that my husband and I do! Lol! |

| I did one of my research papers on thread worms and it made me terrified of even going barefoot because they can enter the body through the skin so she could have even gotten them in your back yard. They can be hard to treat but are possible to get rid of.

| It is actually one the most common human parasites. I'm not really sure how to treat the yard honestly.

| I have read a lot on google about strongyloide worms and some places say that they are species specific and human threadworms are different than those that a dog contracts...some say they are contagious and some say they are not. I am just wondering how crazy to be? Do I was my hands every time Maggie licks me? Do I let her lay on my lap? She has licked my daughters face inadvertently several times today! Should we all go to the doctor to get a worm treatment? Goodness this is stressful! I just want definite answer as to if they are the same kind as humans can get and if they are contagious. I appreciate all of your replies! This is so confusing! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Strongyloides stercoralis is found in dogs and humans (and is transferable). Strongyloides canis is just found in dogs. If they can't identify the species via scope - then they'd have to grow out in culture for 10-14 days to see which species Maggie has. The only thing you can really do is wash your hands often, scoop any feces immediately from your yard, wash her bedding and toys etc.
