| Renal/Kidney Failure Moose will be 11 Sept. 1st. We just found out that Moose is in CRF !! We have switched his food to Hills Diet KD. I am just devastated. He has been so healthy and my (our) life. Our vet said with his labs, he figures he only has about 25% of his normal kidney function!! How did we not know this, I feel so terrible as a yorkie mom! My heart is breaking and I would appreciate any advice and knowledge.

| Moose Hello. So very sorry to hear about the kidney failure news for poor moose. It is a shock I know to get this diagnosis. The same thing happened to me years ago.when my poor baby at 11.5 years suddenly became sick and even after considerable vet efforts and treatment she did not make it. Until this time she seemed very well and had all the dentals and vet visits and tests, so it was a devastating shock to us. Some dogs can survive well with hydration and special diets but in our case it was too late. There is an IDEXX test called I believe SDMA which can detect kidney function earlier, before it has reduced to 75%. I do feel for you and pray that Moose can be treated and live a long and happy life. Please let us know how he is doing. |

| Moose Thanks for your reply and kind words. If Moose is being given all these meds, it sounds like he has a good chance. Some here have been able to successfully treat this disease so take heart. i was told that my baby would have to be regularly hydrated at home and we tried that, but it only lasted about an hour and she got really sick again. So please see that Moose gets plenty of liquid by mouth if not done via a drip into the skin, sub Q. I guess your vet will advise if home or vet hydration is needed. Perhaps you caught the disease early enough to be treated? That is good news. Hugs to you and Moose. As you have another dog, the vet might also advise the SDMA test to hopefully prevent a shock like this again. But I have little knowledge of this test. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I'm so very sorry to hear about the diagnosis. But many, many kiddos do well for years when they have major organ issues. So, try to stay hopeful and keep talking to your vet...and treasure each moment .

| So Moose would not eat the Hill's RX or Royal Cainin KD. I have switched him to Primal Raw Turkey and Sardines. He loves, loves it. It been about 3 weeks now. He goes back in a couple of weeks for follow up on labs.

| If this diet doesn't work, I suggest you ask the vet about Purina EN. I have had many pups over the years refuse to eat K/D...but they always like the Purina EN. Prayers for your boy.

| Moose Thanks for the update. A shame Moose will not eat the RX food. Hope the new food that he likes has the right ingredients and analysis for his condition. Praying he is doing well and the kidney disease is being well controlled. |
